About Alex Brown

Alex Brown was the web master for timwoolleyracing.com which was a site that became Barbaro central. Alex has now left Tim (on good terms of course) and Fair Hill to travel America, from one racetrack to the next. He started at Penn National where he spent three weeks as a freelance exercise rider. He then went to Presque Isle Downs, for five weeks during its inaurgural meet (September). He was a groom, hotwalker and exercise rider. Next stop was Keeneland for its October meet. He was a salaried exercise rider. He then moved to Churchill Downs with the same job. He is now at Sam Houston Race Park, as a salaried exercise rider. This site will follow Alex's journey, as he also writes a book about Barbaro and Barbaro's legacy.

Alex will continue to provide general racing updates and other updates of interest to Fans of Barbaro with the hope that this site continues to serve as a platform for Fans of Barbaro.

Alex has worked in racing for the last twenty years in North America, at Fair Hill Training Center. He has also worked in racing in the UK, if only more briefly. Alex has an MBA, taught Internet Marketing for ten years, worked in the admissions office at the Wharton School, and has written a couple of whitepapers on transparency and the use of blogs.

Young horses learn faster and have more positive interactions with humans when they receive food as a reward during training, according to a new study presented at the 34th Annual Equine Research Day held in Paris, France, on Feb. 28.

Yearlings that received grain pellets as compensation for appropriate reactions to vocal commands were up to 40% faster to acquire new skills than a control group of yearlings that received no rewards. The training primarily involved respecting the words "stop" and "stay" and remaining immobile while the trainer performed certain grooming tasks and veterinary procedures on the horse.

"What we're hoping to do is develop techniques which will allow us to obtain the animal's confidence in us, without using constraints," said Carol Sankey, MSc, a PhD candidate in ethology (the study of animal behavior) at the University of Rennes in western France, and co-author on the study. At the previous Research Day event, Sankey's team presented findings that force can result in a negative relationship between horses and humans.

A yearling in the study receives a food reward.

Sankey and her team devised a series of objectives that the yearlings in both the reward and the no-reward groups were expected to attain in a consecutive order. After learning to stop and stay by voice command only, each animal learned to wait patiently with the leadline draped over its neck while the trainer brushed it, picked its hooves, attached a surcingle, applied tendon boots, inserted a thermometer in its rectum, and finally applied a "vapor spray" (simulating applying fly spray or coat polish) over its coat. All eight colts and 15 fillies involved in the study received training individually for five minutes per day, five days per week, until the entire set of objectives was obtained. The amount of time to achieve each task and the totality of the tasks was recorded for both groups.

On average, the reward group finished their training in 3.7 hours whereas the control group needed 5.2 hours to acquire the same tasks. "There wasn't even any overlap," Sankey explained. "The slowest horse in the reward group still learned faster than the fastest horse in the control group."

Additionally, by the end of the training period, horses in the reward group were more likely to voluntarily approach the trainer and to remain at a closer distance to her than the control horses were. Sankey noted that the horses in the reward group displayed more behaviors considered positive by the researchers, including significantly more sniffing, exploration, and licking of the trainer. Horses in the control group were significantly more likely to bite, kick, or fall over during hoof cleaning.

How to write links

If you are writing posts and using the visual editor, you need this link for advice.

In these examples, all you need to know is the coloured parts.

In both cases, what is orange is the same. Your links must have the orange parts.
The first white part is the URL.
The second white part is the link word that people will see.

Note:
All links must start http:// If they just start with www they will not work.
Links should not have http://http://

Reading this week - NLP in Sports Psychology

Since almost every rider comes with an individual set of different learning styles I like to read up on variety of teaching methods. One of my riders has recently been prizing the NLP (neurolinguistic programming).
I came across it some time ago when reading Mary Wanless's books but didn't really research it any further then. Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is an interpersonal communication model and an alternative approach to psychoteraphy based on the subjective study of language, communication and personal change.

On Sunday during my lunch hour I spotted a book in the office and decided to borrow it and am reading it this week.

The book:

The content is very interesting to read and all the concepts are simplified and made easily digestible. I started digging a little on the subject and I must say I was surprised to find quite a well of information.
If you would like to have a browse through the book click HERE.
What I found especially engaging was how NLP enhances sports performances. Click at the image below and have a read; who knows, you may benefit from the NLP :)

philectric has added a photo to the pool:

I pass by a horse stable (Archway Equestrian, Bothell, WA) on my way to work and noticed that this horse frequently has its head sticking out of the window. I think she's looking over towards the caretakers house, and wondering when she's getting fed. The circular windows are very unique and I thought this would make a great picture. This is the shot I was looking for, but I also had another great shot when the horse looked at me and stuck out her tongue.
