A download Download Direct X manager is a computer program dedicated to the task of downloading (and sometime uploading) Download Direct X possibly unrelated stand-alone files from (and sometime to) the Internet for storage. Download Direct X This is unlike a World Wide Web browser, Download Direct X which is mainly intended to browse web pages, composed of a multitude of Download Direct X smaller files, where error-free Download Direct X moving of files for permanent storage is of secondary importance. (A Download Direct X failed Download Direct X or incomplete web page file rarely ruins the page.) The typical download manager at a minimum provides means to recover from Download Direct X errors without losing the work already completed, and can optionally split the file to be downloaded (or uploaded) into 2 or more segments, which are then moved in parallel, potentially making the process faster within the limits of the available bandwidth. (A few servers are known to block moving files in parallel segments, on the principle Download Direct X that Download Direct X server capacity should be shared equally by all users.) Download Direct X Multi-source is the name given to files that are downloaded in parallel.
There are several things that some web browsers are not very good Download Direct X at. That's where the download managers enter the equation:
Pausing the Download Direct X downloading of large files.
Resuming broken or paused Download Direct X downloads Download Direct X (especially for very large files).
Downloading files on poor connections.
Downloading several files from a site Download Direct X automatically according to simple rules Download Direct X (file types, updated files, etc. - see also Offline Browser).
Automatic Download Direct X recursive downloads (mirroring).
Scheduled downloads (including, automatic hang-up and shutdown).
Searching for mirror sites, Download Direct X and the handling of different connections to download the same file more quickly (segmented downloading).
Download managers are useful for active Internet users. Download Direct X For dial-up users, they can automatically dial the internet service provider at night, when rates or tariffs are usually lower, download the specified Download Direct X files, Download Direct X and hang-up. They can record Download Direct X which links the user Download Direct X clicks on during the day, and Download Direct X queue these files for later download. For broadband users, download Download Direct X managers can help download very large files by resuming broken downloads, by limiting Download Direct X the bandwidth used, so that other Download Direct X internet activities are not affected (slowed) and the server is not Download Direct X overloaded, or by automatically navigating a site and downloading pre-specified content (photo galleries, MP3 collections, etc.) this can also include automatically downloading whole sites and regularly updating them (see Mirroring).
Many download managers support Metalink, an XML file listing mirrors, checksums, and other information useful for downloading.
See below for some Download Direct X examples of commonly used download managers. Some downloaders are optimized for a certain function. For Download Direct X example, Offline Explorer is designed to download entire websites.
Download managers, such as Go!Zilla, Download Direct X were among the Download Direct X first adware applications displaying a banner ad Download Direct X in the user interface.
Related to download managers are Download Direct X two other breeds of Internet Download Direct X programs, file-sharing peer-to-peer applications (Kazaa, eMule, BitTorrent, Gnutella) and stream recorders (such as Download Direct X StreamBox VCR).
While Download Direct X download managers are Download Direct X designed to give users greater control over downloads, some downloaders Download Direct X are created to give that control to Download Direct X content distributors instead. Some software companies, for Download Direct X example Download Direct X Adobe [1], provide such downloaders for downloading software on their own site. Presumably this increases reliability and reduces tech support costs to them. A possible reason is Download Direct X increasing the control over redistribution of their software Download Direct X (even when the software is freeware). In computer Download Direct X technology and telecommunication, on-line and Download Direct X off-line Download Direct X are defined by Federal Standard 1037C. They are states or conditions of a "device or equipment" or of Download Direct X "a functional unit". To be considered on-line, a device must be at least one of:
"Under the direct control of another device"
"Under the direct control of the system with which it is associated"
"Available for immediate use on demand by the system without human intervention"
"Connected to a system, and is in Download Direct X operation"
"Functional and ready for service"
while a device that is Download Direct X off-line is not (e.g. it has "its Download Direct X main Download Direct X power source disconnected or turned off", and is Download Direct X "off-power").
One example of a common use of these concepts is Download Direct X a Mail User Agent that can be instructed to be Download Direct X in either "on-line" Download Direct X or "off-line" states. One such MUA is Download Direct X Microsoft Outlook. When it is "on-line" it will attempt Download Direct X to connect to mail servers (to check for new mail at regular intervals, for example), and Download Direct X when it is "off-line" it will not attempt to make any such connections. The "on-line" or "off-line" state Download Direct X of the MUA does not necessarily reflect the connection status between the computer on Download Direct X which it is running and Internet. The user may have the computer itself on-line, connected to Internet via a cable modem or an ADSL connection, but may wish for Outlook to be off-line, so that it makes no attempt to send or to receive messages. Or the computer Download Direct X may be configured to employ a dial-up connection on demand (whenever an application Download Direct X such as Outlook attempts to make connection to a server), but the connection may be an expensive telephone call from the particular location in which the computer currently happens to be (such as a hotel room) Download Direct X and the user may not wish Outlook to trigger Download Direct X making that call every 5 or Download Direct X 10 minutes to check for mail.[1]
Another Download Direct X example of the use of these concepts Download Direct X is in Download Direct X the world of digital Download Direct X audio technology. A tape recorder, digital editor, or other Download Direct X device that Download Direct X is Download Direct X "on-line" is one whose clock is under the control of the clock Download Direct X of a "synchronization master" device. When the sync master commences playback, the "on-line" device automatically synchronizes itself to the Download Direct X master and Download Direct X commences playing Download Direct X from the same point in the recording. Whereas a device that is "off-line" uses no external clock reference and relies upon its own internal clock. Download Direct X When a large number of devices Download Direct X are connected to a sync master, it is often convenient, Download Direct X if one wants to hear just the output of one single device, to take it off-line, because if the device is played back on-line all synchronized devices have Download Direct X to locate the playback point and wait for each other to be in synchronization.[2] (For further related discussion, see MIDI timecode, word Download Direct X sync, and recording system synchronization.)
A third example of Download Direct X a common use of these concepts is a web browser that can be instructed to be in either "on-line" Download Direct X or "off-line" states. The browser only attempts to fetch pages from servers whilst in the "on-line" state. In the "off-line" state, users can perform offline browsing, where pages can be browsed using local copies Download Direct X of those pages that have previously been downloaded whilst in the "on-line" state. This can be Download Direct X useful when the computer itself is also Download Direct X off-line, Download Direct X with connection to Internet Download Direct X expensive or impossible. The pages are either downloaded implicitly into Download Direct X the web browser's own Download Direct X cache, Download Direct X as a result of prior on-line browsing by the user, or explicitly by the browser being Download Direct X configured to keep local copies of certain Download Direct X web pages, which it keeps updated when the browser is in the on-line state, either by checking that the local copies are up-to-date at regular intervals or by checking Download Direct X that the local copies are up-to-date whenever the browser is Download Direct X switched to the on-line state. One such web browser capable of being explicitly configured to download pages for offline Download Direct X browsing is Internet Explorer. When pages Download Direct X are added to the "Favourites" list, they can be Download Direct X marked for being made "available for offline browsing". Internet Explorer will download to local copies both the marked page and, optionally, all of the pages that it links to. In Internet Explorer version 6, the level of direct and indirect links, the maximum amount of local disc space allowed to be consumed, and Download Direct X the schedule on which local copies are Download Direct X checked to see whether they are up-to-date, are configurable for each individual "Favourite" entry.
See Download Direct X also:
Offline browsing known as "Offline favourites" was removed as a feature in the most recent version of Internet Explorer 7, which only now supports single web page saving, but not browsing or storing an entire site offline.[citation needed]
Similarly, off-line storage is computer storage that is not "available Download Direct X for immediate use on demand by the system without human intervention", i.e it is storage that is off-line.
The ideas of "on-line" and "off-line" have been generalized from computing and telecommunication into the field of human Download Direct X interpersonal relationships. The distinction Download Direct X between what is considered "on-line" and what is considered "off-line" has become a subject of study in the field of sociology.[7]
The distinction between "on-line" and "off-line" is conventionally seen as the distinction between computer-mediated communication and face-to-face communication (e.g. face Download Direct X time), respectively. Download Direct X "On-line" is Download Direct X virtuality, and "off-line" is reality (e.g. real Download Direct X life or meatspace). Slater states that Download Direct X this distinction is "obviously far too simple". To Download Direct X support his argument that the distinctions in relationships are Download Direct X more complex than a simple "on-line"/"off-line" dichotomy, he observes that some people draw no distinction between an "on-line" relationship, such as indulging in cybersex, and an "off-line" relationship, such as being pen-pals. He also argues that even the telephone can be regarded as an "on-line" experience in some circumstances, and that the blurring of the distinctions between the uses of various technologies (such Download Direct X as PDA and mobile telephone, television and Internet, Download Direct X and telephone and voice-over-IP) has made it Download Direct X "impossible to use the term 'on-line' meaningfully in the sense that was Download Direct X employed by the first generation of Internet research".[7]
Slater asserts that there are legal and regulatory Download Direct X pressures to reduce the distinction between "on-line" and "off-line", with a "general tendency to assimilate online to offline and erase the distinction", stressing, however, that Download Direct X this does not mean that on-line relationships are being reduced Download Direct X to pre-existing off-line relationships. He conjectures that greater legal status may be assigned to on-line relationships (pointing out that contractual relationships, such as business transactions, on-line are already Download Direct X seen as Download Direct X just Download Direct X as "real" Download Direct X as their off-line counterparts), although he states it to be hard to imagine courts awarding Download Direct X palimony to Download Direct X people who have had a purely on-line sexual relationship. He also conjectures that an "on-line"/"off-line" distinction may be seen by people as "rather quaint and not quite comprehensible" Download Direct X within 10 years.[7]
The distinction where "on-line" is seen as virtuality and "off-line" as reality Download Direct X is sometimes inverted, with Download Direct X "on-line" concepts being used to define and Download Direct X to explain "off-line" activities, rather than (as per Download Direct X the conventions of the desktop metaphor with Download Direct X its desktops, trash cans, folders, and so forth) the other way around. Several cartoons by Download Direct X The New Yorker have satirized this. One includes Saint Peter asking for a user name and a password before admitting a man into Heaven. Another illustrates "the off-line store" where "All items are actual size!", where Download Direct X shoppers may "Take it Download Direct X home as soon as you Download Direct X pay for Download Direct X it!", and where Download Direct X "Merchandise may be handled prior Download Direct X to purchase!". |
