Documents

The "hot thing" on the Web these days is the use of online document processors and online spreadsheets. Google's products are the best known, but for my money, the products from Zoho are generally superior.
Add a Table of Contents to Google Docs and More
googlesystem.blogspot.com/2008/08/add-table-of-con...
Basic features like table of contents, footnotes or thesaurus are still missing from Google Docs. Some of the features are already implemented and they're ready to be added to the interface.

The Send to Google Docs Firefox extension adds an entry to your right-click menu to send supported filetypes directly to Google Docs.
PDFs: Embed PDFs YouTube-Style with Scribd iPaper

Previously mentioned document sharing application Scribd has updated its embeddable document reader to iPaper, a fast, efficient tool for embedding any document, from PDFs to PowerPoint to Word documents.
Spreadsheets

We recently launched Macros (and Pivot Tables) support in Zoho Sheet. With our recent update, we are now extending this further with support for recording and playback of Visual Basic Macros.

While writing Macros from scratch requires knowledge of Visual Basic, recording Macros just needs couple of clicks. Under the Macros Menu, you'll now see the 'Record Macro' option to start the record process.
Taking Notes

Ever try to do research on the Web, find a lot of good information, but then have a tough time organizing it? If so, you'll like Google Notes. With Notes, when you find something while surfing, you can simply select it and use the Notes button to save it in a Note. Google Notes not only saves your information, but it also keeps track of where it originally came from. You can put information from multiple sources into a Note, including text you write yourself. You can re-arrange your information and use several formatting tools that are provided. You can even publish the Note on the Web or e-mail it. Research just got a lot easier. Try Google Notes.

Zoho also offers a note taking product. It's technically more robust, allowing you to capture videos, whole Web pages, and more. But it's not nearly as easy to use.
Your Own Web Sites

What follows is my opinion about the various options and my recommendation about what to do.
Export Files from Google Page Creator
googlesystem.blogspot.com/2008/08/export-files-fro...
You probably heard that Google intends to close Google Page Creator and migrate the users to Google Sites, a service that seems to be targeted to a different audience and that lacks many features available in Page Creator. Google Sites will add some of the missing features by the time Google closes Page Creator, but those who want to move to a different service or maybe to buy a domain can already export the files.
Free Website & Hosting

The Quick & Easy Website Builder that Requires NO Technical Skills
Indeed, I can't say enough good things about Synthasite. Anyone should be able to create a Web site with this tool. If you have a modicum of technical know how, you can create frames and embed other pages into your own. That's the way this page was created!
Google Sites is an online application that makes creating a team web site as easy as editing a document. With Google Sites, people can quickly gather a variety of information in one place -- including videos, calendars, presentations, attachments, and text -- and easily share it for viewing or editing with a small group, their entire organization, or the world. Get started with Google Sites at http://sites.google.com/site. Key product features:
  • Customize your site's interface to resemble your group or project's look and feel
  • Create a new sub-page with the click of a button
  • Choose from a growing list of page types: webpage, announcements, file cabinet
  • Centralize shared information: Embed rich content (video, Google Docs documents, spreadsheets, presentations, Picasa photo slide shows, iGoogle gadgets) into any page, and upload file attachments
  • Manage permissions settings to keep your site as private or widely editable and viewable as you'd like
  • Search across your Google Sites content with Google search technology
Google Sites is impressive. I use it. For most applications, Google Sites is good enough.

Tips for Linking to Google Presentations
googlesystem.blogspot.com/2008/05/tips-for-linking...
If you want to link directly to the presentation and skip the authentication page, just add "&skipauth=true" to the URL provided by Google and replace "Presentation" with "Present". Here's an example.

Weekend Project: Save and convert a YouTube video - Lifehacker
www.lifehacker.com/software/video-demonstration/we...

There is a much easier way to do this than what this video shows.

If you are using FireFox, install the VideoDownLoader plug in. While the video is playing click on on the videodownloader icon in the lower right hand corner and follow the directions.

Now go to previously mentioned www.media-convert.com and convert the file to what ever you want, again following the directions on the page.

Two steps, no software to install, simple as it gets. Only problem is sometimes media-convert is slow, but it usually works like a charm.

Enter Dapper, a free, advanced web app that walks users through a process of creating a feed for sites, or even just portions of sites, that lack one.
Printables: Convert Your Google Calendar to PDF
lifehacker.com/358308/convert-your-google-calendar...

If you use Google Calendar, chances are you've ignored the little "Print" button on the left side of the tabs at the top. It just pops a print dialog box, right? Wrong! Hit that Print link to customize the look and feel of your calendar on paper: enlarge or reduce the font size, opt to go black and white only, switch between portrait and landscape orientation, and when you hit Print, your browser doesn't send the page to your printer. Instead, you get a PDF document fit to print, save, or email. Handy!
