Mugido's Upgrade/History Journal and Helpful NPC Hints

- by Fastcart of Midgardsormr

Hello all! Welcome to Mugido's, my NPC's, page. I decided to document stuff for a while to assist people who are having issues with their NPC. So, first off is the boring stuff. You can get your NPC through the Fellowship Quest. Minimum requirements seem to be Rank 4, a certain level of Jeuno fame, and a job of level 30 or higher. If you aren't sure whether you meet the requirements, just talk to Luto Mewrilah and see what she says.

Important notes:

  • If you want to make a Cure macro for your NPC, use the <ft> tag.
  • Rendezvous Points are at (G-10) in Ru'Lude Gardens (between MH and AH), and just outside the MH of Northern San d'Oria (L-10), Port Bastok (J-12), and Windurst Waters (K-10).
  • When you fight, try to keep the mob pointed away from your NPC. Especially with you are fighting mobs that uses coned or straight-line attack abilities like Ogreflies that has poison spray and the like (crawlers, leeches, and tigers also come to mind). Also, enemies with strong AoE, especially those with suicide moves, can be bad too (such as goblins, Ogreflies, and weapons) (thanks Icemage).
  • NPCs will only stay around for 15 kills. After the 15th kill, it will despawn. It may be possible for Black Mage or Black Mage sub-job to get extra kills using AoE spells. If you are a melee type, there is no getting around this. It well despawn after the 15th kill even if you link mobs and use "/autotarget on."
    • If you have an extremely strong area of effect (AoE) weapon skill, then maybe you can. But, you'd need to be able to one shot mobs that will give your NPC xp, and I doubt anyone has an AoE weapon skill that strong. One method that may work is whittling down the mobs until they are each killable by a Circle Blade or another AoE weapon skill. The flaw with this method is that your NPC may use its weapon skill to kill a mob and despawn leaving you hanging with a bunch of too weak mobs to kill for nothing. The only way around that is to not engage the mobs and whittle them using ranged attacks or spells.
  • August 9th, 2005 Edit - After the August 1st maintenance, NPCs will stay for 20 kills instead of 15 in some cases. This usually starts around NPC level 35 to 37 or after the 18th call.
  • Avoid mobs that have pets. Pets generally give little xp. Since you only have a limited kill quota, you must do what you can to maximize the xp your NPC gets.
  • August 11th, 2005 Edit - I made a text file that shows where you can xp your NPC. It gives warnings about mobs to avoid or treat with care. You can find the file here.
  • August 25th, 2005 Edit - NPCs do not have to be engaged (fighting mobs) to get xp from their deaths. If you never engage mobs and use only spells to kill them, then those mobs count towards your NPC's xp and kill limit. Similarly, if you are partied with another player and that player kills something while you and your NPC do nothing, then that mob also counts towards your NPC's xp and kill limit.
  • After calling your NPC three times, you'll be able to change its job style.
  • These are the breakdowns of the abilities each job style the NPCs have displayed so far (could have more as they gain levels) (from FFXIOnline):
    • Shield
      • Warns when low on HP (when dialogue is set).
      • Has Resist Sleep and Undead Killer (can intimidate [cause them to be paralyzed at random times] undead).
      • Provoke Usage: At beginning of the fight, after 30 recast, when your HP is below yellow, if you sheath and redraw your weapon.
    • Attacker
      • Has Double Attack and Counter.
      • Warns when low on HP (when dialogue is set).
      • Warns when TP has reached 100% (if dialogue is set).
      • Weapon skill usage: Will warn if your TP is around 50%~99% (if dialogue is set) and will wait for you to reach 100%.
      • Will hold weapon skill if mobs are close to death even if you have 100% TP or higher.
      • Will otherwise use it immediately.
    • Healer
      • Uses White Magic (Cure III, Cure IV, Protect II, Shell, Stoneskin, Dia, Haste, Slow, ...)
      • Will warn when low on MP (if dialogue is set).
      • Will warn when regained enough MP while resting.
      • Doesn't have skill in Hand-to-Hand so will only use one hand if given Hand-to-Hand Weapons.
      • In Battle: Will cast Cure, Paralyze, Silence, Dia, Slow etc while fighting with weapon.
      • Will cast Haste on you when NPC attains level 40.
      • Will still cast Silence on non-magic caster mobs...
      • Other: Casts Protect and Shell, Cures if hurt and removes negative Status Ailments.
      • Can sometimes cast Raise in a party of more than 2 PC's.
    • Etc.
      • Weapon skills are dependent on the weapon your NPC buddy is using.
      • Sneak Attack and Trick Attack-able.
      • Lifetime: 45-57 minutes or 15-20 kills (non-exp and pet-only kills included).
  • July 29th, 2005 Edit - /em takes a serious time out.
    • The problem with pioneering new game features is that you don't have a guide to follow or reliable information to fall back on. It's trial and error. Fortunately for others, there are people like me who document this stuff so that others can learn from our mistakes and not make them themselves. And, I've made several mistakes with this quest so far. ^^ It is my sincere hope those who read this journal are advancing their NPCs well. And, you're welcome.
  • August 1st, 2005 - The update notes for today's maintenance are up. NPC related changes are:
    • The behavior of Fellowship NPCs has been adjusted.
    • Fellowship NPCs will now disappear after defeating a predetermined number of enemies even if the NPC remains in battle mode. (This means only the first 15 kills will count even if Black Mages nuke to kill 16-20.)
    • Signal pearls will now fail to activate when the number of members and Fellowship NPCs in a party totals six or more.
    • An issue wherein the special properties of certain equipment intended to affect a player's wyvern or avatar extended to Fellowship NPCs has been addressed.
    • When asking for a new signal pearl, the relationship between a player and a Fellowship NPC will now worsen slightly.
    • After certain conditions are met, players will be able to keep their Fellowship NPC around for extended adventuring.
      • I read a report on Allakhazam that someone lost the ability to change his NPC's appearance (headgear) after dropping the pearl, but the NPC still had their headgear on. Later on, that same person reported that he got the option back later. He speculates that dropping a pearl costs the player seven or eight calls worth of relationship. He got these numbers because he had the appearance option for two days (four calls) before the patch, then got the option again 3 days later (three calls). This seems logical to me.
  • Experience Points is an experience points chart. If you want to keep track of your NPC's "to next level," you can use this.
  • Many people wonder how they can see their NPC's damage. The above is where I have my filters set. The problem with these settings is that you can also see other people's pets' and NPCs' damage, abilities, and effects too.

Unllisted Qualities

Luto Mewrilah
(Artisan Bridge, Upper Jeuno)

Luto wants you to find out if the person you chose from he list is holding a certain mirror.

  • Speak to Luto Mewrilah (G-8) in Upper Jeuno to trigger this, the "fellowship" quest.
  • She will show you a list of names. In essence, this lets you choose the name, face, race, and headgear style of your future NPC.
  • Special Note: The NPC you choose from the list does not physically exist in the game. In other words, don't go trying to search them out, because you'll never actually find them anywhere. Much like Lion, Zeid, Semih Lafihna, or Prince Trion, these NPCs only really exist in cutscenes.
  • After you have made your selection, you will need to speak to some of the following NPCs throughout Jeuno: Red Ghost (G-8, Port Jeuno), Kuah Dakonsa (H-8, Lower Jeuno), Akta (H-10, Ru'Lude Gardens). There are only three NPCs to speak to, meaning there are only six possible faces that can be chosen.
  • Next, talk to Bheem (F-5) in Upper Jeuno. Doing so will determine the color of your NPCs hair. Essentially, saying yes chooses hair color A while saying no will select hair color B.
  • The NPC "head" that you end up choosing will also determine which headgear that the NPC will be able to use as he/she levels and grows.
  • Speak again with Luto Mewrilah to finish the quest.

Check out link for helping you decide how you want your NPC to look.

Girl in the Looking Glass

Laurana
(Artisan Bridge, Upper Jeuno)
Laurana's daughter has gone missing. She is a young girl with blonde hair, and was wearing a brown dress and a brown cap.
  • After completing the Unlisted Qualities quest, be sure to zone out of Upper Jeuno, and then zone back in again and speak with Luto Mewrilah (G-8).
  • After a short cutscene, speak with Bheem (F-5).
  • Head to the southern (G-8) entrance to Eldieme Necropolis and zone in. Not too far into the dungeon you'll come across a ??? on the floor. Examining the ??? will spawn Namorodo (Lv.-), a skeleton NM.
  • Your future NPC buddy will appear and help you attack the NM. Beware of linking Gazers (Lv.41-43) or other aggressive monsters in the area that will attack your NPC. If you NPC dies, you will need to fight the NM again.
  • Immediately after attacking the NM, speak with your NPC. If you fail to talk to your NPC in time, he/she will dissapear and you will have to fight the NM again.
  • Head back to Upper Jeuno and speak again with Luto Mewrilah to finish the quest.

Mirror, Mirror

Luto Mewrilah
(Artisan Bridge, Upper Jeuno)

Luto has recently discovered that another mirror bearing strange properties exists in the world. It is supposedly somewhere in San d'Oria and she want you to go look for it.

  • After completing the Girl in the Looking Glass quest, be sure to zone out of Upper Jeuno, and then zone back in again and speak with Luto Mewrilah (G-8).
  • Next, travel to Port San d'Oria and talk with Portaure (H-9) in Cargo Room B. You will be treated to a short cutscene.
  • Prepare yourself for a level 40-capped BCNM. Then, head to Ghelsba Outpost and examine the Hut Door (H-10). Enter the "Mirror, Mirror" BCNM. This BCNM has a time limit of 15 minutes and allows three players (who are in a party and are at same point in this quest) to enter at one time.
  • Please note that only those who have the quest (and have spoken with Portaure) will be allowed to enter the BCNM together. If you try to take others, they will not be allowed to enter the BCNM even if they have already finished this quest.
  • The BCNM consists of a NM fight against a Carrion Dragon (Shadow Dragon type). When the dragon's life reaches a certain mark, you will be treated to another short cutscene and your NPC buddy will join the fray. Make sure that your buddy survives the encounter, or you will fail the BCNM.
  • This BCNM is easy to solo with a level 40 job. A melee job of level 37 or higher can solo this BCNM with a Warp Cudgel and no armor. However, a level 37 Tarutaru melee may have trouble unless he or she uses a 2 hour-ability.
  • Once the fight has ended, you will receive another cutscene. Return to Luto Mewrilah in Upper Jeuno to obtain your reward.
  • Congratulations! You can now summon your NPC!

Past Reflections

Luto Mewrilah
(Artisan Bridge, Upper Jeuno)

Luto wants you to search the Optistery library in Windurst for a book that can help her repair the broken mirror.

  • Travel to the Opistery in Windurst Waters (G-8) and talk to Tosuka Porika.
  • After a short cutscene you'll be asked to gather the following items:
    • White Bread
      • You can find this in many of the resturants in San d'Oria (~100-300 gil).
      • You can also find this at the Culinarian's Guild in Windurst (~100-300 gil).
    • San d'Orian tea
      • Sold in the Lion Springs Tavern (K-6) of Southern San d'Oria, only to San d'Oria citizens and only when San d'Oria is first in conquest (~2,500-3,000 gil).
    • Windurst Salad
      • Sold in the Timbre Taverns (F-10) of Windurst Waters (1,600-2,000 gil).
      • Sold in the Marble Bridge Eatery (F-7) of Upper Jeuno for (1,600-2,000 gil).
    • Whitefish Stew
      • Sold in the Timbre Taverns (F-10) of Windurst Waters only when Windurst is 2nd place or better in conquest ranking (5,900-7,100 gil)
    • Bison Steak
    • Icecap Rolanberry
  • After trading these items to Tosuka Proika, you will obtain the book in question.
  • Return to Luto Mewrilah for the next part of the quest. She'll ask you to find the little girl you rescured in your earlier NPC adventures.
  • You can find her by going to Port Jeuno and talking with Khumo Daramasteh. Khumo is standing between the Port Jeuno home point and the Kazham airship entrance (around J-8).
Reward: Improved relationship with NPC.

Blighted Gloom

Luto Mewrilah
(Artisan Bridge, Upper Jeuno) (G-8)

Luto has asked you to locate a special metal that can be used to repair the broken mirror. According to her research, this substance can only be found inside an extremely rare species of slime.
  • Your "Fellowship Bond" will need to be around (??) in order for you to activate this quest. *
  • Also, you'll need to have finished the Past Reflections quest.
  • Speak with Luto, pay close attention to what she says, she will send you to one of three places.
  • Once reaching the ???, examine it to pop an NM, your npc will join you in this fight. After defeating it, talk with your npc and then examine the ??? again.
  • Make sure your npc doesn't die during the fight. The NM is pretty weak for a level 75 however.
  • Report back to Luto to finish the quest.
The three areas Luto can send you to are the following:
  • Ordelle's Caves
    • Take the entrance located at (F-7) in La Theine Plateau. Once zoning in, take your first right and follow the path which leads downstairs until you find the ??? located at (I-5).
  • Korroloka Tunnel
    • Find the ??? at around (F-10) on the second map (the same map with the NIN flag quest ???). You'll have to drop down from a bridge at (H-9/10) on stated map.
  • Ranguemont Pass
    • Find the ??? at around (I-9).
    • After reporting back to Luto, you will be directed to Jugner Forest. You must enter Jugner Forest from the King Ranperre's Tomb exit. Once there, head to the lake and follow the shore to your left until you find the ??? at (G-5). Please beware, the ??? at (F-5) for the San d'Oria quest A Timely Visit is also located in this area and can be hard to solo if you pop the NMs. You want the ??? at (G-5), not (F-5).

Reward: Increased bonds between you and your NPC. Also, you can now choose what kind of headgear your npc wears.

* Your "Fellowship Bond" increases by (1) every time that you use your Signal Pearl, your Tactics Pearl, or call your NPC at a Rendezvous Point (e.g. in Promyvion). Certain quests can also increase your bond.

Luto Mewrilah
(Artisan Bridge, Upper Jeuno) (G-8)

Palometa still lies in cursed slumber. You must find a way to save her!

  • Speak with Luto, then head to Neptune's Spire in Lower Jeuno.
  • Examine the door directly across from the npc shop for a cutscene.
  • Next, get a hold of a sickle, hatchet and pickaxe. Time to do some harvesting/logging/excavation with your npc.
  • The three key items needed can be found in the following areas
    • lunascent log: Jugner Forest at any logging point.
    • mistroot: Giddeus at any harvesting point.
    • glimmering mica: Maze of Shakhrami at any excavation point.
  • The only trick to obtaining these items is your npc must be called and out when you attempt to log/harvest/excavate. This will require to use 3 uses of your signal pearl for each zone (or tactic's pearl).
  • After obtaining all 3 key items, head to the mirror pond in Beaucedine Glacier (pond nearest to Fei'yin) for your next cutscene.
  • Head back to Neptune's spire for the next cs and then to Luto to finish this quest.
Reward: Increased bonds between you and your NPC.
