Criminal Law
Criminal law is the body of statutory and common law that deals with crime and the legal punishment of criminal offenses. There are four theories of criminal justice: punishment, deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabilitation.

The law of evidence governs the use of testimony (e.g. oral or written statements, such as an affidavit) and exhibits (e.g. physical objects) or other documentary material which is admissible (i.e. allowed to be considered by the trier of fact, such as jury) in a judicial or administrative proceeding (e.g., a court of law).

Felonies & Misdemeanors

There are two levels of crimes – felonies and misdemeanors which are determined by the severity of the crime and the length of punishment. According to applicable statute, crimes classified as Felonies involve punishment of more than one year and the defendant has the right to a jury trial. Misdemeanors are generally crimes which are punishable for less than one year in jail and one accused of a misdemeanor still has the right to trial by jury.
