Just me dropping by
Philipp> Oh welcome Corsin. We're chatting below.
Tony> Hey. I'm here now too...
Sam> Hi there. Are you on the real thing, or the gadget? Tony> I've tried both. But mainly in the real thing. Hello world?
corsin: is there anybody? Sam: Yes, I am here. Corsin: how do i use this? Sam > I have no idea. We [Me and Philipp] are using the new gadget and using it as chat. That is ok
Google Notebook Bugs
Posted by Tony (26 September 2006):
As mentioned above, trying to edit a notebook name with an apostrophe doesn't work properly. It seems that's because Google aren't escaping or encoding the name when you edit it. Try this as an example:
1. Create a new notebook and enter the following as a name (including all quotes, etc.):
' onblur="alert(document.cookie);"><input type='hidden 2. Then select "Rename notebook" from the "Actions..." drop down. 3. Click out of the name field and read the contents of your Google.com cookie in the alert box! (There are many other possibilities too, of course.) I'm not sure if this could be abused at all... just thought I'd mention it.
Update (27 September 2006): After reporting this to Google, this bug has now been fixed! Google Blogoscoped - Live Chat
Philipp> Please all edit along...
Sam> When did this come out? I think just now?? Philipp> Check out this: http://www.google.com/notebook/public/16341200977093356787/BDRgSSwoQ24Knz94h Comment tester. I have just realised that Notebook has *no* options.
Philipp> Works like chat.
Sam> It is like chat. I cant work out how often it updates though. I think you have to refresh, or save something This is a test from Germany.
Philipp> Who am I talking to? :) I don't have the extension right now...
Sam> Sam Davyson here. Does anyone use the extension/plugin?
Sam > Is there an option in notebook to loose the rich text formatting. I think it would be way smoother without it. It would be like editing image titles/descriptions on Flickr.
Philipp> Hmm, dunno. Do you think this is useful as group chat with live "streaming" options to a public web page? :)
Sam> The streaming part is cool. But the actual chatting part is awkward. Philipp> Test 12 3 ... I'm now chatting through the new Personalized Homepage module!
Sam > Where is the link for the module?! Sam > Oh it is here. I am on the homepage now.
Sam > I wish you could make it full screen now that they have this tabs option.
Philipp> By the way I've posted this now :)
is there any sense behind this? or should this be something like basecamp?
Tony> I've noticed a bug in Notebook when you try renaming a notebook with an apostrophe in its name. Rubbish!
Philipp> Combined with the Google Notebook extension for Firefox I guess you can have a collaborative note-taking while people surf...
hide, the brits are comming
Philipp> Tony that almost sounds like SQL injections work too!
corsin: but no way you would know who edited it
corsin: does it autopudate?
Tony> Yeah, it should definitely say who added the note and when.
Philipp> If you look at this through the Personalized Homepage Gadget it looks even more chat like. Google Talk doesn't have any group functionality right?
Tony> Nope. Google Talk doesn't. Spreadsheets does though. Shame it doesn't auto-refresh. Philipp> Right. And spreadsheets auto-updates the view, this display doesn't seem to do that (the public page/ the gadget)
Corsin: not yet, or is there anything Tony?
Tony> BTW, I've seen spammers try to take advantage of Google Notebooks by adding loads of links to v1agra and l0ans sites, etc. Do they not realise that notebooks are excluded in the robots.txt file?
Philipp> There are only roughly 6,000 notebook pages so far and lots of spam [site:google.com/notebook/]
http://www.google.com/notebook/user/06835465639052992279 Philipp> Only the notebook search seems to be excluded, not the Notebook user pages or public pages ...
Corsin: does that kind of "spam" be valuable?
Philipp> Tony: I think we posted that simultaneously :)
But as the Google search above shows, the pages do get indexed by Google! Tony> Ah - only the search is excluded, but notebooks are included (of course). Those crafty spammers!!!
Tony> Damn, we need auto-refresh if we're using this as a chat feature.
Has anyone *ever* used any information they found on a Google Notebook?
============ Your changes ============
============ Your changes ============ Sam> It does need to autoupdate. Otherwise I imagine you could get data loss with 2 people editing the same note.
Tony> Let's all try to edit this one then. It doesn't seem to lock it in any way.

Tony> Sam, did you post those "============ Your / Their changes ============" lines or did Google Notebook do that? Sam> No I didn't. But it is getting worse! Tony> Also, with their new "Trash" feature, I've discovered that they never actually deleted my notebook entries when I clicked the "Delete" button!
Corsin: trust me, withing a few weeks, there will be the perfect online chat solution ;)
Sam> I am not sure we need another way to chat online.... Philipp> I think I just provoked the note being split into two versions... by doing global formatting changes
Sam > Oh ok. Tony> Looks like that was Google Notebook's way of coping with deadlocking... Not ideal, but at least they're dealing with it!
Philipp> I think we finally broke it. :)
Sam > Yeah it is not quite unbreakable.
^^ Sam > But this is not what it is for. For people contributing info to one source it is pretty neat.
This is like a wiki.
Sam > If you were to setup a project using this, then you would need a "One Note - One Person" rule.
Tony > I agree. Erm, we don't have that rule here do we...? ;-) Sam > Ha ha! No, I don't think we need that rule. Philipp> One Person -> Many Notes, but One Note -> One Person. Google could just offer a way to force this as setting, and then they need to add timestamps and author information and we can all go home happy ;)
Sam > Names, and time stamps are essential. When they are added... this is like a group blog!
Sam > Not only is there not a list of people who are here... but there isn't a way to see a list of people it has been shared with.
Tony > Sam, I agree. I'm surprised Google Page Creator doesn't allow collaboration. The "Apps for Your Domain" already does...
Tony > Why would Google pay testers $75/hour when they can get our feedback for free?
Ionut > Tony sez: "Why would Google pay testers $75/hour when they can get our feedback for free?"
Cause those testers are competent and reliable. Read the requirements. Tony > And we're not competent and reliable? Bah. What do they know...? Sam > Do you think they are watching this right now?
Sam > This must be *the* most active GNotebook right now.
Tony > Or eva...! Sam > Probably that too.
