RESOURCES: SE The Internet has grown exponentially in the last fifteen years but search engines have not kept up—until now. Cuil searches more pages on the Web than anyone else—three times as many as Google and ten times as many as Microsoft. Rather than rely on superficial popularity metrics, Cuil searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance. When we find a page with your keywords, we stay on that page and analyze the rest of its content, its concepts, their inter-relationships and the page’s coherency. Then we offer you helpful choices and suggestions until you find the page you want and that you know is out there. We believe that analyzing the Web rather than our users is a more useful approach, so we don’t collect data about you and your habits, lest we are tempted to peek. With Cuil, your search history is always private. Cuil is an old Irish word for knowledge. For knowledge, ask Cuil. Labels:

hakia is building the Web's new "meaning-based" (semantic) search engine with the sole purpose of improving search relevancy and interactivity, pushing the current boundaries of Web search. The benefits to the end user are search efficiency, richness of information, and time savings. The basic promise is to bring search results by meaning match - similar to the human brain's cognitive skills - rather than by the mere occurrence (or popularity) of search terms. hakia's new technology is a radical departure from the conventional indexing approach, because indexing has severe limitations to handle full-scale semantic search. RESOURCES: SE What makes Beaucoup different? This question is somewhat difficult to explain and have understood unless you know the nature of the WWW well. But, in a nutshell, Beaucoup is different because the engines listed on the main site (all but the category "Shopping", are what I call "free information" sites -- that is, they offer up a *lot* of information, not simply lists of commercial products or services. They must also be searchable in that they have either an input engine or an alpha-numeric listing -- anything which allows the user to zero in on pages pertaining to the topic they're researching. Any site which exists out of these parameters is either a mistake (please inform me if you find such a site) or extremely exceptional. Labels:

My Favorite Search Engine knows everything about every subject I am interested in. I can access all of the information available on the Web with My Favorite Search Engine”. “Oh, yes!”, we answer. “Indeed! We have no doubt that you have chosen the best search engine for your own search purposes! We don’t want you to part with your favorite—Yahoo, MSN or Google.” However, what if you think about searching in a different way. Have you ever raked through the paper card index of a big library? You have to find the necessary letter (or their combination), take the correct drawer, and start sorting through the cards. Ring any bells? After much time and effort, finally you find the long-awaited card! Of course web search engines take away the laborious task of sifting through paper index cards. And if you know the book’s exact author and title, either search is easy—on the web or in a library. But what if you know only your general search scope? Neither the author’s name nor the book title. In a library, the only way out is to ask a librarian. But on the web, what do you do? You are on your own. Until now. Quintura is the very know-all librarian! Labels:

RESOURCES: SE The Top 100 Alternative Search Engines, March - ReadWriteWeb
www.readwriteweb.com/archives/top_100_alternative_... Many technologies change our lives; only very few infiltrate and colonise our language. Google is the name Sergey Brin and Larry Page gave to their upstart start-up eight years ago, which they charged with an immodest mission to ‘organize all the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful’. To ‘google’ is now to rove the vast, virtual expanses of the World Wide Web; Germans ‘googelte’, Japanese ‘guguru’, Finns ‘googlata’. The word ‘search’ once evoked journeys to distant places and into darkest interiors; ‘search’ is now something we do from our computers, with Google and ‘search engines’ like it as our emissaries.
