A shooter killed 32 people[3] and injured 29 more before committing suicide,[4] making it the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.[4]

The shooter, Seung-Hui Cho, was a senior English major at Virginia Tech.[4] He had a history of incidents at the school, including allegations of stalking,[5] referrals to counseling,[6] and a 2005 declaration of mental illness by a Virginia special justice.[7]

THe Last Gift! My vacation is going so great, I've been having playdates with all my friends. For Christmas I got a foos ball table and a gamecube from santa but the foos ball table was from my grandparents. I also celebrated Hannuka and I had it at my house this year. If I could give one last gift to someone that person would be my neighbor because, she is one of the nicest people I know. The gift I would give her would be a scarf I made for her. I would like to give her a scarf that I made because, it is nicer to make a present to someone than to buy a present. You can make that person feel great if you make something for them. I got a lot of things for my parents so I want to make her a present. I am going to make her one and I have one already started to make it for her. I have gotten a lot of cool presents from my relatives. This has been one of the best Christmases ever!! I am also going to have a New Years party this year and it is going to be great. My friends and neighbors are going to be there and we are maybe going to set off fire works and they will be awesome and LOUD!!!!!

Happy Hoidays and a Happy New Year!!!

Trussville Educational Technology Conference

About Trussville City Schools
We are a new school system with 4 schools, 4,500 students, and 300 faculty and staff. Suzanne Freeman, Superintendent, is committed to move our school system from good to great. A part of this commitment is to develop a greater capacity for 21st Century skills with faculty, staff, students, parents, and the community. To begin this process, she hired Shawn Nutting as Directory of Technology who brought his expertise from the IT business world to create an infrastructure to support Web 2.0 in the classroom. In 2007, April Chamberlain was brought on board as a teacher in residence to assist the technology department and teachers to understand and utilize the tools and resources that are available to educate students.

Design of TETC 2006
In order for a large scale 21st Century program, you must have teachers who are more than comfortable with technology. Last year, we created the Trussville Educational Technology Conference to enable teachers to attend 4 hours of technology professional development during a teacher workday in January. The conference featured the technology staff who assisted in teaching teachers how to maintain their SharePoint webpages, uses of the wireless laptops there were to receive at the end of the conference, and some classes exploring Web 2.0 skills. However, because the majority of teachers had never even heard of blogs, wikis, podcasts, etc., it was extremely difficult to locate people to train during the conference.

Evaluation

The eMINTS National Center is pleased to announce the designation of the Education Development Center as the program’s external evaluation consultant beginning March 1, 2006. EDC brings nationally recognized expertise to the eMINTS National Center’s evaluation processes. Senior advisors for the project include Margaret Honey, Co-Director of EDC’s Center for Children and Technology, and Glenn Kleiman, Vice President and Senior Research Scientist at EDC, where he directs the Center for Online Professional Education.

Edifying student bloggers

Mark Ahlness’ Mighty Writers are 3rd grade students at Arbor Heights Elementary School in Seattle, Washington.

I think pre-service teachers in certification courses should be required to visit classroom blogs like Mighty Writers and leave positive, supportive comments and feedback for the students. This assignment can potentially both edify the young student writers, and educate the pre-service teachers about the powerful and effective ways web 2.0 technologies can be utilized in the “real” classroom. I did this last fall with my students in Microcomputer Applications. They read and commented on posts by Bob Sprankle’s Room 208 3rd and 4th graders in Wells, Maine.

Mark also maintains a professional blog titled, “Mark’s edtechblog,” social bookmarks, and a personal homepage.

Go Mark and go Mighty Writers!!!

k12online Shanghai LAN party podcast #7

November 5th, 2006 by Jeff Utecht

Our final LAN party podcast…kind of sad really. We discuss the conference in general, the LAN parties, and touch on Anne Davis’s keynote of Overcoming Obstacles. It was a great Saturday morning, taking part in a 2 hour Skype conversation as part of the When Night Falls Skypecast and learning and watching the presentations in the Overcoming Obstacles strand.
