www.techlearning.com/blog/2007/12/a_model_for_perm... A model for permeable classroomsIn today's post, I'd like to piggyback a bit on David Jakes' post from yesterday, "Semi-Permeable." I like the concept of a classroom being on a continuum as a learning community: from opaque, to semi-permeable, to permeable. In David's conception of permeable classrooms, the term refers to "how open and closed they are to their members, and potential members."

Our 47 minute videoconference on December 6, 2007, from Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, is available in three different segments from OETA and NewsOK.com. This was a fantastic interactive videoconference, and was followed by an additional 45 minute question and answer videoconference with Oklahoma students. Dick Pryor of OETA hosted and facilitated conversations with those involved with the USS Oklahoma memorial dedication, as well as two veteran survivors of the USS Oklahoma attack on December 7, 1941. Here are the direct links as well as embedded videos of this videoconference. View each video in the embedded player windows below, or click the link for each one to view on a separate webpage. "If it doesn't have the copyright symbol on it, is it still copyrighted?" These are important questions, but unfortunately there are often not clear answers to them. Misconceptions abound among educators today about what uses of multimedia are permissible and legal in the classroom under US copyright law, and it is critical to address and correct these ideas. The advent of mp3 file compression has heralded a new day for music piracy, and online services like Napster have morphed into "peer to peer" (P2P) file sharing clients apparently out of legislative reach, like Morpheous, Kazaa, Limewire, and many others. The issues are real, and the need for educator guidelines is clear. Not only do educators have a responsibility and legislative mandate to model ethical, legal, and appropriate respect for US copyright law in their own teaching, but they must also educate the next generation about the importance and requirements of intellectual property law. Given the dynamic nature of not only technology, but copyright law itself, this is a formidable challenge.
