Skype in the Classroom
by Wesley A. Fryer
www.wesfryer.com
Internet connectivity in educational settings provides opportunities for interactive exchange and collaboration between students living on other sides of town or the other side of the planet. These synchronous, real-time discussions using free software like “Skype” can tangibly expand the walls of the traditional classroom and engage students to write, share, and communicate with an authentic audience inaccessible just a few years ago. Educators interested in helping motivate students to develop both traditional as well as twenty-first century literacy skills in the classroom can and should use audio conferencing technologies like Skype to literally plug their students into collaborative exchanges with global partners on a variety of projects.

Program Description: Vision: Wikipedia and the Future of Free Culture
Vision is one of the most powerful forms of long-term thinking. Jimmy Wales, founder and president of the all-embracing online encyclopedia Wikipedia, examines how vision drives and defines that project and its strategy - and how it fits into the even larger world and prospects of "free culture."
"The design of Wikipedia," said its founder and president Jimmy Wales, "is the design of community." |
Internet encyclopaedias go head to headJimmy Wales' Wikipedia comes close to Britannica in terms of the accuracy of its science entries, a Nature investigation finds.

Creative Commons in K-12 Education
By Wesley A. Fryer
www.speedofcreativity.org
Is it legal for me to use this picture in my slideshow presentation? What if we put it on the Internet, is it still legal? What about including music in my digital story? What can we do legally at school, and what can students legally do at home when they are not working on an assignment for class?
Copyright 101 for Educators: Winter 2003
(Published in the TechEdge 2002-03)
"Do I have to get permission to use this?"
"Is this legal?" "If it doesn't have the copyright symbol on it,
is it still copyrighted?" These are important questions, but unfortunately
there are often not clear answers to them. Misconceptions abound among
educators today about what uses of multimedia are permissible and legal in the
classroom under US copyright law, and it is critical to address and correct
these ideas. The advent of mp3 file compression has heralded a new day for
music piracy, and online services like Napster have morphed into "peer to peer"
(P2P) file sharing clients apparently out of legislative reach, like Morpheous,
Kazaa, Limewire, and many others. The issues are real, and the need for
educator guidelines is clear. Not only do educators have a responsibility and
legislative mandate to model ethical, legal, and appropriate respect for US
copyright law in their own teaching, but they must also educate the next
generation about the importance and requirements of intellectual property law.
Given the dynamic nature of not only technology, but copyright law itself, this
is a formidable challenge.

Testimonials
Write a testimonial about libraryman
joblesslibrarian says:
"Hey, here's a superhero with energy. Reams, stacks and archives of energy! I got hooked to Flickr after being inspired by his Web2.0 presentation at the Internet 2006 Librarian Conference in Monterey. Thanks, Libraryman! You saved the day!"
drdrewhonolulu says:
""Libraryman" is not your typical LIS techie. Yes, he loves his tech toys, and he shows with great humor and enthusiasm, but he keeps reminding librarians why these are important as we try to revision libraries in the present and future."
Kymberlee della Luce says:
"Michael has the rare gift of celebrating the myriad wonders of life with his photos. I am always delighted to see new photos from him and eagerly "open" them like presents on Christmas morning.
His work shows his attention to detail, the lush sensuality that life has to offer and the warmth and absurdity that are always waiting for us if we look for it.
Thank you, Libraryman, for cataloging your life with such beauty and wonder. I am grateful for the opportunity to see life through your eyes."
Random Factor says:
"Libraryman has no bones, but rather is composed of a series of fluid-filled bladders surrounded by a hard exoskeleton. Libraryman can turn light switches on and off with the power of his mind. Libraryman has the Buddha Nature as well as a Tombstone Disposition. Libraryman will kill you three times before you hit the floor. Do not taunt Libraryman."
kirstenpdx says:
"libraryman has a great eye for the absurd and a wonderful sense of humor. i just completely admire him, from afar. *sniff*"
dalem says:
"It was the frolicking in the Tuscan field of poppies beneath the bright spring sun that haunts me to this day.
I tried to believe it was just the Brunello, but I knew that wasn't true. It was the sparkle in Libraryman's eyes when he spoke of cataloging, his endless quest for the perfect answer to an obscure reference question. Yes, it was his thirst for knowledge (and wine)."
oh dr. jack says:
"Libraryman and I have travelled the Orient together and I have been with him since he was sreaming in his crib as a wee lad. He is a survivor and a Renaissance Man; he |
