Abstract

Abstract of the Disclosure Electronic circuit apparatus for protecting privacy of information stored in host computer that is communicably linked to remote terminal(s) via telecommunication network provides usefully tight security with relatively low-cost commercially producible components, e.g., solid state memory and logic chips, functioning to permit access to host computer information only upon electronic demonstration that request for access is from an authorized member terminal.

Claims (12)

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. In a data processing system having a host computer, and at least one send/receive terminal in communication with the host computer, the improvement of apparatus comprising:
a host modem for modulating and demodulating signals to and from the host computer and the terminal; an access controller having electronically disconnectable means for coupling to the host modem, a memory for storing an enquiry sequence of bits and a reply sequence of bits, means for detecting elec-tronic message signals addressed to the host computer, means for transmitting to the host modem and thence to the terminal a bit sequence duplicating said enquiry sequence, means for providing that the next received signals after transmission of the enquiry sequence be compared with the reply sequence stored in the controller memory, means for issuing a discon-nect signal to the host modem, means for issuing an authorized link established signal, transfer path means engageable for signal transfer from the host modem-controller junction to the computer input and for signal transfer from the computer output to the host modem-controller junction, said transfer path being biased in the unengaged condition and being switched to the engaged condition only upon issuance of an authorized link established signal by means of the controller, means providing that the disconnect signal issue to the host modem upon expiration of a predetermined wait time period wherein no incoming signal is received following the trans-mission of the enquiry sequence, means providing that the disconnect signal issue to the host modem when a discrepancy results from a comparison of said next received signals with the stored reply bit sequence, means providing that when sequence agreement results from comparison of said next received signals with the stored reply bit sequence, then, the authorized link established signal issues to switch the transfer path to the engaged condition.
2. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein the memory is resistant to alteration.
3. Apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein the memory is of the read-only-memory kind.
4. Apparatus as set forth in claim 3 comprising a metal-oxide-silicon read-only-memory.
5. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1 comprising a microcomputer for storing and comparing the bit sequences and for issuing disconnect signals and authorized-link-established signals according to timeliness and propriety of replies received by the host modem.
6. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein the micro-computer is of single chip structure.
7. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1 comprising a crystal oscillator for timing.
8. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein the memory has stored therein an enquiry bit sequence and a reply bit sequence with at least 5 highs in the enquiry sequence and at least 31 highs in the reply sequence.
9. Apparatus as set forth in claim 8 wherein the highs in the sequences are at intervals varying in the range of 3.3 to 200 milliseconds.
10. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1 comprising a memory capable of storing a preset bit sequence of at least 49 bits.
11. In communicable association with the terminal in the data processing system referred to by claim 1, an accessor for performing functions complementary to functions of the access controller, said functions including responding to the host enquiry sequence by transmitting a duplicate of the reply bit sequence stored in the memory.
12. Apparatus as set forth in claim 11 wherein the terminal includes a terminal modem for modulating and demodu-lating signals to and from the host computer and the terminal.
