Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
The present invention relates to a plastic plug for sealing wood preservative in holes drilled in wood structures. Wood plugs currently in use are difficult to remove and are generally not suitable for re-use. This makes it difficult to retreat existing holes with preservative. The plastic plug can either be driven or screwed into position. The plug is removed by unscrewing it. It can be removed for retreatment and can be re-used. The plug provides a consistant seal. A variation of the plug allows preservative to be inserted through the plug without its removal. A seal made of rubber or other flexible material is disposed within the interior of the plug. This seal has a pair of crossed slits. The construction is such that the seal will ordinarily prevent preservative from escaping through the interior of the plug but which will allow introduction of preservative by insertion of a probe which will spread apart the lips formed by the slits.

Description
~f)~ 2 ~
STRUCTURES ~ . -The present invention relates to a plug for sealing wood preservatives in holes drilled in wood structures, and more particulary to sealing wood preservatives in holes drilled in standing wood utility poles.
.~ The present invention pro~ides a plug that can be removed and re-used when subsequent applications of wovd preservative are applied to a pole. A variation provides for a fle~ible diaphram ",-, ~ -,,--within the interior of the plug which allows injection of preservative without removal of the plug. r,~
The present invention provides a plug that may be flexible ....
and that will seal wood preservative in the hole with consistancy. - .. ' .
Standing wood poles are typically used by power and ' :, ! :. .:, communication utilities. To prolong the life of these poles many companies have wood pole maintenance programs. Injection of a . .-: , . . .
wood preservative into holes drilled in a pole is a common method : -:
. , -.
.; ~ of curbing the spread of rot inside the pole. The first internal rot treatment is applied after the pole has been in service for a :~ number of years. Additional treatments at regular intervals are subsequently applied.
' ;~ '' ,S~ ~ 2 7 A deficiency of the wood dowels usually used as plugs is that once installed, they ~re difflcult to remQve when addition~l treatment is required. Another difficulty is that the sealing capability of the wood plugs is not consistant.
The present invention conslsts of a tapered thermoplastic cylinder with an external screw thread and female receptical at the head end of the plug which will mate with a removal tool.
The plu~ can be either driven or screwed into position. For ~ ~
removal the plug is unscrewed. - .
. .
In a second embodyment a sealing ring is added to the outer end of the plug. This ring improves sealing characteristics when the axial center line of the plug and the surface of the wood structure are at or near right angles.
In a third embodyment the interior of the plug is hollow ~ -except for a seal made of rubber or other flexible material which is disposed within the interior of the plug. This seal has a pair of crossed slits The construction is such that the seal will ordinarily prevent preservative from escaping through the interior of the plug but which will allow introduction of preservative by insertion .
of a probe which will spread apart the lips formed by the slits.
