DETA LED DESCRIPTION OF TE~ DRA~IN~S
A fir~t embodiment of a busine~ form according to the pre~ent invention is ~hown generally by reference numeral 10 in FIGURES 1 and 2. The : bu~ine~s form'10 preferably con~ist~ of only three components; a label construction, designated : generally by reference numeral 11, a releas~ sheet designated generally by reference numeral 12, and a self-imaging sheet designated generally by re~erence numeral 14.
: The label con~truction 11 comprises at least one label, but pre~erably a plurality of label~ 16.
~: Th~ top face 17 o~ the label construction 11 i3 a face on which indicia may be readily applied, and ths bottom ~ace comprises pressure sensitive adh~ ive 18 (see FIGURE 2). The label con~truction 11 typically i~ of conventional label material~, : such as a bond paper heet having a pressure 25 sensitiYe adhe~i~e 18 applied to one face thereof.
The~pressure ensitive adhesive 18 may be a r~po~itional adhesive, ~uch as utiliæed in commercial products sold by Moore Bu~ine~s Forms, ~: Inc. of Grand Island, New York undex the trademark "NOT~ STIX~", or may be of a more permanent type, 5 ;~ 5 such a~ a wide variety of conventional different types comprising a rubbery type elastomer combined with a liquid or solid resin tackifier component.
The release sheet 12 comprises a sheet having at lea~t the top face 20 thereof of a material that will not permanently adhere to pres~ure sensitive adhesive. A wide variety of conventional materials could be used for the release sheet 12, such a~
gla~3ine, bond material coated with a non-3tick coating, or the like. The release ~heet 12 ha~
means defining at lea~t one opening therein, and preferably defining a plurality of opening~ 21. As : illustrated in FI W RES 1 and 4, the openings 21 preferably are dispo~ed in row~ and columns, at : 15 lea~t three openings in each row and column, and at least one opening 21 çorresponding to each label 16. Of course a plurality of opening -- such as the openings 21i in EIGURE 1 -- can be as30ciated with an individual label 16.
The third element 14 comprises a conventional ~elf-imaging sheet, such as a sheet 23 of bond paper (see FIGURE 2) covered by a CFB ~el-imaging coatin~
: 25. The ~heet 14 may hava a con~truction ush a~
: : ~ the ~elf-imaging sheet in U.S. patent 4,705,298, the disclo~ure of~ which i8 hereby incorporated by : re~erence herein. The ~elf-imaging sheet 14 i9 held ~:~ in contact with the release sheet 12 bottom face 22 by the pre~ure senaitive adhe~ive 18. While the adhe~ive 18 propsrly holds the ~elf-imaging 3heet 14 in place in view of the pressure sen~itive adhssive : extending through the openings 21 and contacting the self-imaqing sheet 14, the components 11, 12, and 14 : may be disconnected without damage to the components 6 2~5~S~5 in view of the nature of the adhesive 18 and the self-imaging coating 25.
FIGURE 3 illu~trates a ~econd embodiment of the busines~ form according to the invention de~ignated generally by reference numeral 110. For the busines~ ~orm 110, the component~ 11, 12 are identical to those de~cribed above. The component 14, howev~r, is replaced with a component 30. The component 30 comprises a bond sheet 31 or the like having a self-imaging (CFB) coating 32 applied thereto on the top surface thereof, and a second adhesive -- that i~ an adhesive additional to the adhesive 18 -- de~ignated by reference numeral 33 is applied to the bottom face of the bond sheet 31.
The adhesive 33 also may be a repositional adhesive, or a more permane~t adhe~ive.
The elements 31-33 are preferably parfed, die-cut, or otherwise constructed ~o that they ~:: corre~pond to the labels 16 of the label con~truction 3heet 11. I f the second adhesive 33 i3 a pre~ ure ~ensitive adhesive, then it i~ important to provide a release liner 35, of glassine or a simil~r relea3e material which will not adhere to the~adhe~ive 33, covering the face of the second adheaive 33.
When the adhesive 18 is a permanent adhesive, ~: it i~ de~irable to spot coat the coating 25 with a ~ relea~e material at those areas of coating 25 : corresponding to openings 21. One such area i indicated at 36 in FIGURE 1. The release coating may be a varnish of a siliGone based wax, and prevents da~age to coating 25 when the label con3truction i8 detached.
7 ;~ ,5~5 FIGURE 4 illu~trates a modified form of the release sheet according to the invention, designated generalLy by referenca numeral 112. The sheet 112 has a top face 20 with a plurality of opening~ 21 therein, ju~t as the sheet 12, but differs in providing one or more marginal portions 40 having tractor openings 41 dispo~ed therein, and connected by a perf line 42 to the rest of the release sheet.
The tractor drive portion~ 40 allow the form with which the release sheet 112 is asæociated to be driven through a tractor drive impact printer.
In the method of constructing a record for a label according to the pre~ent invention, first the label construction 10, self-imaging heet 14, 30, and relea~e sheet 12, ~12 are stacked 80 that the release sheet 12, 112 i~ sandwiched between the self-imaging face 25, 32 of the self-imaglng sheet : 14, 30, and the bottom face of the label con~truction 11, the sel~-imaging ~heat 14, 30 engaged by pre3~ure ~ensitive adhesive 18 from the label construction 10. Then indicia is applied to the top face 17 of the label con3tructio~ ll by impacting it~ ~o that the impact transfera to the ~el-imaging face 25, 32 and is duplicated thereon.
Tha impacting may be done by an impact printer through which the form 10, 110 is passed in a sheet format, or in a continuous format ~e.g. utilizing the relea3e ~heet 112 of FIGURE 4). Of course indicia can al!qo be:applied with a writing in~trum2nt, or the like, or any other means that provides uitable pressure to transfer the image to the ~elf-imaging material 25, 32.
: :
8 ~ s After the indicia has been applied to the top face 17 of the label con~truction 11, the label constructi~n indicia containing portion is detached from the release sheet 12 by peeling it back, and it i~ applied to a de~ired surace. The ~elf-imaging sheet 14, 30 automatically is di~connected rom the release sheet 12 when the labels 16 are removed since it is the adhesive 18 from the label 16 that holds the self-imaging sheet 14, 30 in place. If permanent adhesive 1~ is used, the spot coating~ 36 prevent damage to self-imaging coaking 25 when the plie~ are ~eparated.
When the self-imaging sheet 30 i~ provided, there i8 the urther step of ramovlng the release liner 35 from the second adhesive 33, and applying the record ~heet to another urface, to which it is adhered by the adhe~ive 33. The bu~ine~s form~ lO, llO according to the present invention consist of the indicated element~. That is, no additional element3 -- 3uch a~ additional attachment mean~
(whether adhe~ive or mechanical) -- are necessary to hold the components together.
It will thu~ be ~een that according to the present invention a simpla, advantageous business form allowing the production of a record copy of a : label, has been provided, as well a~ a method of con~tructing a record:for a label, and a particular : ralea~e flh~Qt component for the bu~ine~ form.
~: ~ While th~ invention ha~ be~n herein ~hown and described in what i~ presently con eived to be the ; : mo~t practical and preferred embodiment thereof it ; ~ will be apparent to tho~e o ordinary ~kill in the ~ art that many modifications may be made thereof 9 2~ iS
within the ~cope of the invention, which scope iq to be accorded the broadest interpretation of the appended claims so as to encompa~ all equivalent ~tructure~ and procedures.
