Abstract
An optical communication system wherein a wavelength used by a terminal for transmission and reception is assigned thereto in accordance with a call request from the terminal.
When the terminal makes a call request at a control wavelength, a wavelength control unit selects a wavelength to be used by the calling terminal out of the wavelengths unused on a wavelength-multiplex communication path, and informs the terminal of the selected wavelength at the control wavelength. The terminal adjusts the wavelength of transmitting and receiving circuits to the informed wavelength.
As an example of the optical communication system is disclosed a wavelength-sharing optical exchange system.
A connection request from a terminal is transmitted through a wavelength-multiplex communication path at a control wavelength. The wavelength is directed through a subscriber line control unit to a network channel control unit. The network channel control unit retrieves a wavelength table contained therein to decide if the terminal at the other end is available. If the called terminal is available, the network channel control unit selects a usable wavelength out of the wavelengths recorded on wavelength table and sets a switchboard such that the switchboard can operate at the selected wavelength. Further, the network channel control unit informs the calling and called terminals of the selected wavelength at the control wavelength via the subscriber-line control units. Both of the terminals then set transmitting and receiving wavelengths to the selected wavelength.
