Abstract

2142324 9404223 PCTABScor01 A rescue system is provided which includes a hoist having a backplate (30) and a rope drum (36) mounted on said backplate, with the rope drum adapted to receive a rope (46) wound at least one and one half times about a rope engaging surface on the drum. The drum is rotatable in one direction (A) when a pulling force is exerted on a control end of the rope and blocked against rotation in an opposite direction (B) when a pulling force is exerted on a load end of the rope, so that the rope drum provides a braking force on said rope when a force is exerted on the load end of the rope. The hoist includes an arcuate rope guide (48) fixed to the backplate and extending at least 200· about the drum, and the drum itself is provided with a rope engaging surface including a cylindrical portion (42) and a tapered portion (44), with the tapered portion lying closest to said backplate. Additional system components for use in conjunction with the hoist include a centrifugal brake mechanism (110), a swivel pulley (210) and a handled acsender (310).

Claims (35)

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A rescue system comprising: a hoist including a backplate; a rope drum mounted on the backplate, said rope drum having a rope engaging surface located between a pair of circular end flanges, said rope drum capable of rotation in a first direction in response to a pulling force applied to a control end of a rope wound around said rope drum at least one and one half times, and said drum being blocked against rotation in a second, opposite direction such that a frictional braking force is applied to the rope when a pulling force is applied to a load end of the rope in a second direction opposite said one direction; and a rope guide fixed to said backplate, said rope guide formed by a pair of elongated laterally spaced legs connected at opposite ends of said rope guide to define therebetween at least one rope slot, said rope guide having an arcuate shaped conforming substantially to said circular end flanges of said rope drum, wherein said rope guide extends circumferentially at least 200° about said end flange.
2. The rescue system of claim 1 wherein said backplate is formed with an attachment hole above said rope drum such that a vertical centerline of said backplate extends through said hole and through an axis of rotation of said ropedrum.
3. The rescue system of claim 2 wherein said rope guide extends circumferentially beyond said vertical centerline in said second direction.
4. The rescue system of claim 3 wherein said rope guide extends circumferentially beyond said vertical centerline about 60° in said second direction.
5. The rescue system of claim 3 wherein said at least one rope slot is formed with a wedge groove proximate said centerline.
6. The rescue system of claim 5 and including a connecting bight between said legs adjacent said wedge groove.
7. The rescue system of claim 6 wherein said connecting bight is provided with a wear indicator for alerting a user of excessive wear in said wedge groove.
8. The rescue system of claim 1 herein said rope has a diameter of 3/8 inch and said rope guide is radially spaced from said rope engaging surface about 1/2inch.
9. The rescue system of claim 1 herein said rope has a diameter of 1/2 inch and said rope guide is radially spaced from said rope engaging surface about 5/8inch.
10. The rescue system of claim 1 wherein said rope engaging surface includes a substantially cylindrical portion and a substantially tapered portion, said substantially tapered portion located closest to said backplate.
11. The rescue system of claim 10 wherein said frusto-conical portion comprises about one third of said rope engaging surface.
12. The rescue system of claim 4 wherein said rope engaging surface includes a substantially cylindrical portion and a substantially frusto-conical portion, said substantially frusto-conical portion located closest to said backplate.
13. The rescue system of claim 3 and including a rope guide block fixed to said bracket and having a portion overlying the rope turns on the rope drum at alocation 180° from a location where said rope guide intersects said vertical centerline.
14. The rescue system of claim 13 wherein said guide block has another portion provided with a guide slot for rope coming off the drum.
15. The rescue system of claim 1 and further comprising a pullet including a rotatable sheave mounted between a pair of support plates, said support plateshaving an attachment hole at one end for securing said pulley to the load end of the rope, and an attachment loop at an opposite end for securing said pulley to a person supported on the load end of the rope, wherein said attachment loop includes a swivel connection to said support plates.
16. The rescue system of claim 1 and further comprising a brake operable to engage the load end of the rope when the speed of the rope in said second direction reaches a predetermined level.
17. The rescue system of claim 1 and further comprising a tool for hauling on the rope, the tool comprising an open handled portion terminating at an upper end with a pass thru slot for the rope, and a pivotally mounted locking cam for engaging and locking the tool and rope together, and a cam actuating lever protruding rearwardly of said open handled portion for disengaging said locking cam.
18. The rescue system of claim 17 wherein said open handled portion terminates at a lower end in a reversible handle grip extending perpendicularly relative to said open handle portion to thereby enable a user to haul on said rope with two hands.
19. A rescue system comprising a hoist including a backplate; a rope drum mounted on said backplate, said rope drum capable of rotation in one direction only;
said rope drum having a front and rear end plates on either side of a rope engaging surface, said rope engaging surface including a cylindrical portion and a tapered portion, said tapered portion located adjacent said rear end plate; said hoist further comprising an arcuate rope guide including a thru slot fixed to said backplate and extending partially about said drum.
20. The rescue system of claim 19 wherein said arcuate rope guide also extends axially across said rope drum between said front and rear end plates.
21. The rescue system of claim 19, wherein said hoist also includes a rope guide block fixed to said bracket for confining rope turns on the drum.
22. The rescue system of claim 19 wherein said cylindrical portion of said rope engaging surface has an axial extend sufficient to seat two and one half turns of rope.
23. The rescue system of claim 19 wherein said tapered portion of said rope engaging surface comprises means for forcing rope on the drum to move towards said front end plate to thereby clear space for new rope to come onto the drum.
24. The rescue system of claim 19 and further comprising a pulley including a rotatable sheave mounted between a pair of support plates, said support plateshaving an attachment hole at one end for securing said pulley to the load end of the rope, and an attachment loop at an opposite end for securing said pulley to a person supported on the load end of the rope, wherein said attachment loop includes a swivel connection to said support plates.
25. The rescue system of claim 19 and further comprising a brake operable to engage the load end of the rope when the speed of the rope in a direction opposite said one direction second reaches a predetermined level.
26. The rescue system of claim 19 in further combination with a tool for hauling on the rope, the tool comprising an open handle portion terminating at an upper end with a pass thru slot for the rope, and a pivotally mounted locking cam for engaging and locking the tool and rope together, and a cam actuator lever protruding rearwardly of said open handled portion for actuating said locking cam.
27. The rescue system of claim 26 wherein said open handled portion terminates at a lower end in a reversible handle grip extending perpendicularly relative to said open handle portion to thereby enable a user to haul on said rope with two hands.
28. In a rescue system comprising a hoisting apparatus which includes a backplate, a rope drum mounted on said backplate, said rope drum adapted to receive a rope thereon, wound at least one and one half times about a rope engaging surface on the drum, said rope having a load end and a control end, said drum rotatable in one direction when a pulling force is exerted on said control end and blocked against rotation in an opposite direction when a pulling force is exerted on said load end such that said rope drum provides a braking force on said rope when said pulley force is exerted on said load end; the improvement comprising:
a) an arcuate rope guide fixed to said backplate and extending at least 200°
about said drum; and b) said rope engaging surface including a cylindrical portion and a tapered portion, said tapered portion lying closest to said backplate.
29. The system of claim 28 and including a rope guide block fixed to said bracket and having a portion overlying the rope wound on the drum.
30. The system of claim 28 and including brake means for stopping the rope as it unwinds from said drum upon reaching a predetermined speed.
31. The rescue system of claim 30 wherein said brake means comprises a first element for sensing speed of a third turn of the rope as it comes off the drum and a second element for grasping a first turn of the rope as it comes onto the drum when the speed of the third turn reaches a predetermined level.
32. The rescue system of claim 28 wherein said backplate is formed with an attachment hole above said rope drum such that a vertical centerline of said backplate extends through said hole and through an axis of rotation of said ropedrum.
33. The rescue system of claim 32 wherein said rope guide extends circumferentially beyond said vertical centerline in said second direction.
34. The rescue system of claim 33 wherein said rope guide extends circumferentially beyond said vertical centerline about 60° in said second direction.
35. The rescue system of claim 33 wherein said rope guide if formed with a rope slot having a wedge groove proximate said centerline.
