Abstract

An optical pulse sequence is generated by applying a repetitive optical signal to an optical modulator connected in the laser cavity of a mode-locked laser. The pulse sequence in the laser cavity is then ouput. The repeat period of the repetitive optical signal is set to be equal to, or an integer multiple of, the cavity round-trip time.
The laser is thereby driven to output pulses in bit positions corresponding to the non-zero pulses of the input repetitive optical signal. In one example, he output pulse sequence is used to control an optical switch to provide an OTDM programmable multiplexer using optical signals.
