Abstract

A socket tool (10) is formed primarily from non-metallic composite material.
The socket tool body (11) is compression molded of high-strength, glass-reinforced vinyl ester sheet molding compound. Metal inserts (20, 25) are respectively received in the driven (14) and driving (13) ends of the tool body (11), the inserts (20, 25) respectively defining openings (22, 27) for respectively mateably receiving associated driving and driven members, the inserts (20, 25) being disposed in the body (11) so that no portion of the inserts (20, 25) projects outwardly beyond the exterior surface of the body (11). The inserts (20, 25) are preferably insert molded in the body (11), but may also be fixedly secured in pre-existing recesses in the ends of the body, as by press-fitting or bonding. In the latter case, the inserts (20, 25) are provided with anti-rotation outer surfaces (81, 87, 91) which are non-circular in transverse cross-sectional shape.
