Abstract

An integrated multi-wavelength transmitter comprising an arrayed waveguide grating with feedback channels (32) between two coupling regions (34, 36). The multi-wavelength signal from a first coupling region (34) is reflected from a mirrored surface (54) back into the first coupling region and the arrayed waveguide grating, the mirrored surface thus forming one end of an optical cavity. Each single-wavelength output from second coupler (36) is split up into one part until it passes through a gain region (52) and is reflected back from the mirrored surface (54) whereas a second part passes modulator (58) and enters the first coupler. The multi-wavelength signal (42) from the second coupling region is the output (58) of the transmitter and contains the modulated carriers for all wavelengths.
