Abstract

A method of authentification of data sent in a digital transmission characterised by the organisation and authentification of the data prior to transmission into a hierarchy of at least one root directory unit (75), subdirectory unit (76) and file unit (77), data in a file (77) being acted upon by an authentification algorithm and an associated file authentification value (82) stored in the referring subdirectory unit (77), this file authentification value (82) being in turn acted upon by an authentification algorithm and an associated subdirectory authentification value (79) stored in the referring root directory. Other aspects of the invention relate to the authentification of a second root directory (78) by generation of a second authentification value (83) and the authentification of data before encapsulation in tables or sections of a transport stream.

Claims (26)

1. A method of authentification of data sent in a digital transmission system characterised by the organisation of the data prior to transmission into a hierarchy of at least one root directory unit, subdirectory unit and file unit, data in a file being acted upon by an authentification algorithm and an associated file authentification value stored in the referring subdirectory, this fife authentification value being in turn acted upon by an authentification algorithm and an associated subdirectory authentification value stored in the referring root directory.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, in which authentification of the file data is carried out by applying a hashing algorithm to some or all of the file data, the resulting hash value being stored as the file authentification value in the referring subdirectory.
3. A method as claimed in claim 2, in which the hashing algorithm corresponds to a cryptographically secure algorithm that generates a substantially unique hash value from a given set of data.
4. A method as claimed in any preceding claim, in which authentification of file data for a plurality of files is carried out by applying a hashing algorithm to an accumulation of data from a plurality of files to generate a single hash value.
5. A method as claimed in any preceding claim, in which authentification of a subdirectory is carried out by applying a hashing algorithm to at least the file authentification value, the resulting hash value being stored as the subdirectory authentification value in the referring root directory.
6. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which authentification of a plurality of subdirectories is carried out by applying a hashing algorithm to an accumulation of file authentification values from a plurality of subdirectories to generate a single hash value.
7. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which at least some of the data stored in the root directory is acted upon by a secret key of an encryption algorithm and the resulting encrypted value stored in the root directory.
8. A method as claimed in claim 7, in which the encrypted data corresponds to a digital signature generated using a private key of an encryption algorithm, the signature being verifiable by use of a corresponding public key.
9. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which a referred unit includes an encrypted value generated by a secret key, an authentification value for this module being calculated based on the results of an authentification algorithm on the encrypted value and stored in the referring unit.
10. A method as claimed in claim 9 in which a signature value for the referred unit is generated by an encryption algorithm, the signature value being acted upon by a hashing algorithm to generate the authentification value.
11. A method as claimed in claim 9 or 10 in which the referred unit is a subdirectory or file unit.
12. A method as claimed in claim 9 or 10 in which the referred unit is a second root directory module.
13. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which the units correspond to a set of data files, the data files being encapsulated in data tables or sections, these tables being thereafter encapsulated in data packets to form a transport stream.
14. A method as claimed in claim 13 in which the units correspond to data objects formatted according to the DSMCC standard.
15. A method as claimed in claim 13 or 14 in which the units are encapsulated in tables and packets conforming to the MPEG standard.
16. A method of authentification of a first and second set of linked data units sent in a digital transmission system, characterised in that one of the first set of units includes a signature generated by a secret key acting on that first unit, at least this signature value being authentified by an authentification algorithm and the authentification value being stored in a unit in the second set of units that refers to that first unit.
17. A method as claimed in claim 16 in which the encrypted value corresponds to a digital signature generated by a secret key acting upon at least some of the data in that unit.
18. A method as claimed in claims 16 and 17 in which the data units correspond to a set of data files encapsulated in data tables or sections, these tables being thereafter encapsulated in data packets to form a transport stream.
19. A method of authentification of data sent in a digital transmission system, characterised in that data is organised in a series of data files, authentification being carried out between files independently of and prior to the stage or stages of formatting and encapsulation of data used by the digital transmission system to prepare data for transmission in a packet transport stream.
20. A method as claimed in claim 19 in which authentification of data is carried out prior to encapsulation of data in a series of tables, these tables thereafter being encapsulated in data packets in the transport packet stream.
21. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which the digital transmission system corresponds to a digital television system.
22. A method of verification of received data sent in a digital transmission system according to any of any of claims 1 to 15 in which a receiving decoder acts upon data in a file with an authentification algorithm and compares the resulting value with the authentification value stored in the referring subdirectory, and also acts upon at least the file authentification value stored in the subdirectory with an authentification algorithm and compares the subsequent resulting value with the associated subdirectory authentification value stored in the referring root directory.

A method of verification of received data sent in a digital transmission system according to any of claims 16 to 18, in which a decoder verifies the signature value in the first unit using an associated public key and also verifies the authentification value stored in the unit in the second set of modules using an authentification algorithm acting upon at least the signature value.
24. A method of verification of received data sent in a digital transmission system according to any of claims 19 to 21, in which the step of verification of data is carried out after the file data has been reassembled by the decoder from encapsulated and formatted data transmitted by the digital transmission system.
25. A method of authentification of data sent in a digital transmission system substantially as herein described.
26. A method of verification of received data sent in a digital transmission system substantially as herein described.
