Abstract

The present invention is directed to a system, method, and apparatus for providing subscriber services to a mobile terminal. The mobile switching centers MSC (120) transmit an MSC capabilities message (205) which informs t he Home Location Register HLR (126) of the services the MSC supports. When a mobile terminal roams to a particular MSC, the HLR compares (410) the subscriber profile and the MSC capabilities message to determine whether (41 5) the MSC can support a particular subscriber service. Where the MSC cannot support a particular subscriber service, the HLR determines (420) a comparab le service which the MSC does support and modifies (425) a copy of the subscrib er profile to include the comparable service as a replacement for the subscribe r service that is not supported.

Claims (15)

1. In a telecommunication system comprising a mobile switching center (MSC 120) connected to a home location register (HLR 126) storing subscriber profiles, a method for providing services for a subscriber associated with a mobile station (135), said method comprising the steps of:
transmitting a request (310) for a subscriber profile associated with the mobile station from the MSC to the HLR, said subscriber profile listing a certain subscriber service; and determining (311) whether the MSC can support said certain subscriber seance;
the method characterized by the step of:
where the MSC cannot support said certain service, modifying (312) a copy of said subscriber profile thereby causing said modified copy of said subscriber profile to list at least one comparable service as a replacement for said certain subscriber service.
2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of receiving an MSC capabilities message transmitted from the MSC including a plurality of subscriber services that are supported by the MSC.
3. The method of claim 2, wherein said MSC capabilities message comprises a plurality of indices, said plurality of indices corresponding to a master list, said master list comprising a complete list of subscriber services supported by the telecommunications system.
4. The method of claim 2, wherein said determining step occurs at the HLR.
5. The method of claim 2, wherein said determining step further comprises the step of comparing the plurality of subscriber services identified in said MSC capabilities message to the certain subscriber service listed in the subscriber profile.
6. The method of claim 1, further including the step of downloading (315) the modified copy of the subscriber profile to the MSC for use in providing subscriber services to the subscriber.
7. The method of claim 1, further including the step of notifying (317) the subscriber through the mobile station as to the nature of the replacement comparable subscriber service being provided by the MSC.
8. A Home Location Register (HLR 126) connected to a mobile switching center (MSC 120), wherein said home location register stores a subscriber profile listing a subscriber service, said HLR comprising:
means for determining (311) whether the MSC can support said subscriber service;
the HLR characterized by:
means responsive to failure to support the subscriber service for modifying (312) a copy of said subscriber profile thereby causing said modified copy of said subscriber profile to list a replacement service for said subscriber service.
9. The HLR of claim 8, wherein the HLR stores a listing subscriber services supported by each MSC.
10. The HLR of claim 9 wherein said means for determining further comprises means for comparing the supported subscriber services to the subscriber service listed in said subscriber profile.
11. The HLR of claim 8 further including means for downloading the modified copy of said subscriber profile to the MSC for use in providing subscriber services.
12. The HLR of claim 8 further including means for notifying (317) a subscriber through his mobile station as to the nature of the replacement comparable subscriber service being provided by the MSC.
13. A telecommunications network comprising:
a mobile switching center (MSC 120); and a home location register (126) connected to said MSC, said home location register storing a subscriber profile listing a subscriber service and a list of subscriber services supported by said MSC, the HLR further operating to compare (311) the subscriber service listed in the subscriber profile with the list of subscriber services supported by said MSC;
the network characterized by:

the HLR still further operating to replace (312) the subscriber service listed in a copy of the subscriber profile with a comparable subscriber service from the list of subscriber services supported by said MSC.
14. The telecommunications network of claim 13 wherein the home location register is further operable to download (315) the copy of said subscriber profile with the replaced subscriber service to the MSC for use in providing subscriber services.
15. The telecommunications network of claim 13 wherein the home location register is further operable to notify (317) a subscriber through his mobile station as to the nature of the replacement comparable subscriber service being provided by the MSC.
