Abstract

Microlens sheetings with composite images are disclosed, in which the composite image floats above or below the sheeting, or both. The composite image may be two-dimensional or three-dimensional. Methods for providing suc h an imaged sheeting, including by the application of radiation to a radiation sensitive material layer adjacent the microlenses, are also disclosed.</SDOA B>

Claims (43)

1. A sheeting, comprising:
a. at least one layer of microlenses, the layer having first and second sides;
b. a layer of material disposed adjacent the first side of the layer of microlenses;
c. an at least partially complete image formed in the material associated with each of a plurality of the microlenses, wherein the image contrasts with the material; and d. a composite image, provided by the individual images, that appears to the unaided eye to be floating above or below the sheeting, or both.
2. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the composite image appears under reflected light to float above the sheeting.
3. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the composite image appears in transmitted light to float above the sheeting.
4. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the composite image appears under reflected light to float below the sheeting.
5. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the composite image appears in transmitted light to float below the sheeting.
6. The sheeting of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the composite image also appears to the unaided eye to be at least in part in the plane of the sheeting.
7. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the material is a radiation sensitive material.
8. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the material is a metallic radiation sensitive material.
9. The sheeting of claim 8, wherein the metallic radiation sensitive material is selected from aluminum, silver, copper, gold, titanium, zinc, tin, chromium, vanadium, tantalum and alloys of these metals.
10. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the material is a nonmetallic radiation sensitive material.
11. The sheeting of claim 10, wherein the nonmetallic radiation sensitive material is selected from zinc sulfide, zinc selenide, silicon dioxide, indium tin oxide, zinc oxide, magnesium fluoride and silicon.
12. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the material is a radiation sensitive metallic oxide compound.
13. The sheeting of claim 12, wherein the radiation sensitive metallic oxide compound material is selected from oxide compounds formed from aluminum, iron, copper, tin and chromium.
14. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the material is a thermochromic radiation sensitive material.
15. The sheeting of claim 14, wherein the thermochromic radiation sensitive material is selected from copper carbonate, copper nitrate with thiourea, copper carbonate with sulfur containing compounds of thiols, thioethers, sulfoxides and sulfones, hydrated sulfates, nitrides of boron, aluminum and bismuth.
16. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the material is a multi-layer thin film radiation sensitive material.
17. The sheeting of claim 1, and further comprising a spacer layer disposed between the material layer and the microlenses.
18. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the sheeting is an exposed lens sheeting.
19. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the sheeting is an embedded lens sheeting.
20. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the microlenses are selected from plano-convex lenslets, round double convex lenslets, rods, microspheres, beads and cylindrical lenslets.
21. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the composite image is perceptible across a viewing angle of less than one hundred (100) degrees.
22. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the composite image appears to move relative to the sheeting as the viewing position changes relative to the sheeting.
23. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the composite image disappears and reappears when the angle at which the sheeting is viewed changes.
24. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the sheeting comprises more than one composite image.
25. A method of forming a composite image on a microlens sheeting, comprising the steps of:
a. providing a sheeting having an array of microlenses and a radiation sensitive material layer adjacent one side of the layer of microlenses;
b. providing a radiation source; and c. forming an at least partially complete image in the radiation sensitive material associated with each of a plurality of the microlenses using the radiation source, whereby the sheeting exhibits a composite image, provided by the individual images, that appears to the unaided eye to float above or below the sheeting, or both.
26. The method of claim 25, wherein each image is formed by multiple patterned exposures of the radiation source, with the sheeting being at a different position relative to the radiation source during each exposure.
27. The method of claim 25, wherein each image is formed by at least one exposure of the radiation source through a lens array.
28. The method of claim 25, wherein the method is repeated to provide more than one composite image on the sheeting.
29. The method of claim 25, wherein the images are formed by multiple exposures of the radiation source, with the sheeting being at a different distance away from the radiation source during each exposure.
30. The method of claim 25, wherein the radiation source provides radiation with a wavelength of between 200 nm and 11 um.
31. The sheeting of claim 1, made by the method of claim 25.
32. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the sheeting further comprises an adhesive layer for applying the sheeting to a substrate.
33. The sheeting of claim 31, wherein the sheeting is adhered to a substrate.
34. The article of claim 32, wherein the substrate is a document.
35. The article of claim 32, wherein the substrate is a sign.
36. The article of claim 1, wherein the sheeting is used to display information for advertising.
37. The sheeting of claim 32, wherein the substrate is a component of an identification card.
38. The method of claim 32, wherein the substrate is a container.
39. The method of claim 25, wherein the composite image also appears to the unaided eye to be at least in part in the plane of the sheeting.
40. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the composite image is a two-dimensional image.
41. The sheeting of claim 1, wherein the composite image is a three-dimensional image.
42. The method of claim 25, wherein the composite image is a two-dimensional image.
43. The method of claim 25, wherein the composite image is a three-dimensional image.
