Abstract
The present invention is directed to a system and method for providing real-time position information of one party to another party by utilizing a conventional telecommunication network system such as the convention telephone network (2), a mobile telecommunications network (22), a computer network, or the Internet (1). More specifically, the preferred embodiments of the present invention allow a caller (5,6) and a receiver (18a) of a telephone call to provide to and receive from each other position information related to the caller and/or receiver's physical location, including address information, GPS
coordinates, nearby fixed locations such as a parking structure, etc.
Additionally, the preferred embodiments of the present invention allow a caller (5,6) and receiver (18a) to retrieve routing instructions or maps for traveling to or from each other. In another embodiment of the present invention, a party may locate the position of another party via the entry of the other party's unique identifier such as a phone number of the other party's mobile phone. In yet another embodiment of the present invention, the position information of a party may be concurrently delivered to another party's computer terminal whereby the other party can process the information in further detail.

Claims (110)
1. A method of providing position information of a caller using a telecommunication network, said method comprising the steps of:
receiving caller information, said caller information including at least one of a caller identification information and the phone number information of the caller;
receiving receiver information, said receiver information including a unique identification information of the receiver;
using the caller information received, retrieving a caller position information, said caller position information indicating the location of the caller;
and using the received receiver information, transmitting to the receiver the caller position information.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of authenticating the caller information.
3. The method of claim 1, wherein said unique identification information of the receiver is a phone number of the receiver.
4. The method of claim 3, further comprising the step of authenticating the receiver information.
5. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of transmitting the caller position information to a display device for display.
6. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of transmitting the caller position information to a telematics device.
7. The method of claim 1, wherein the caller position information includes one of graphical mapping information, longitudinal and latitudinal information, altitude information, and address.
8. The method of claim 1, wherein the caller position information includes position information of a fixed location nearby the caller.
9. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of using the receiver information to retrieve a receiver position information, said receiver position information indicating a location of the receiver.
10. The method of claim 9, further comprising the step of transmitting to the caller the receiver position information.
11. The method of claim 9, further comprising the step of transmitting to the receiver the receiver position information.
12. The method of claim 9, wherein the receiver position information includes one of graphical mapping information, longitudinal and latitudinal information, altitude information, and address.
13. The method of claim 9, further comprising the step of providing to the receiver routing information for traveling between the location of the receiver to the location of the caller.
14. The method of claim 13, wherein said routing information includes one of graphical mapping information, text information, and turn-by-turn direction information.
15. The method of claim 9, further comprising the step of providing to the caller routing information for traveling between the location of the caller to the location of the receiver.
16. The method of claim 15, wherein said routing information includes one of graphical mapping information, text information, and turn-by-turn direction information.
17. The method of claim 1, wherein the caller position information is retrieved from a remote database.
18. The method of claim 9, wherein the receiver position information is retrieved from a remote database.
19. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of transmitting to the caller the caller position information.
20. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of verifying the privacy preference of the caller.
21. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of verifying the privacy preference of the receiver.
22. The method of claim 1, wherein said telecommunications network is a wireless communication network, and wherein the caller information is received from a wireless communication device.
23. The method of claim 22, wherein said wireless communication device is one of a wireless telephone, a personal digital assistant, and a portable computer.
24. The method of claim 1, wherein said telecommunications network is a wireless communication network, and wherein the receiver information is received from a wireless communication device.
25. The method of claim 24, wherein said wireless communication device is one of a wireless telephone, a personal digital assistant, and a portable computer.
26. A system of providing position information of a caller using a telecommunication network, said system comprising:
means for receiving caller information, said caller information including at least one of a caller identification information and the phone number information of the caller;
means for receiving receiver information, said receiver information including a unique identification information of the receiver;
means for using the caller information received to retrieve a caller position information, said caller position information indicating the location of the caller; and means for transmitting to the receiver the caller position information.

31. The system of claim 26, further comprising means for transmitting the caller position information to a telematics device.
32. The system of claim 26, wherein the caller position information includes one of graphical mapping information, longitudinal and latitudinal information, altitude information, and address.
33. The system of claim 26, wherein the caller position information includes position information of a fixed location nearby the caller.
34. The system of claim 26, further comprising means for using the receiver information to retrieve a receiver position information, said receiver position information indicating a location of the receiver.
35. The system of claim 34, further comprising means for transmitting to the caller the receiver position information.
36. The system of claim 34, further comprising means for transmitting to the receiver the receiver position information.
37. The system of claim 34, wherein the receiver position information includes one of graphical mapping information, longitudinal and latitudinal information, altitude information, and address.
38. The system of claim 34, further comprising means for providing to the receiver routing information for traveling between the location of the receiver to the location of the caller.
39. The system of claim 38, wherein said routing information includes one of graphical mapping information, text information, and turn-by-turn direction information.
40. The system of claim 34, further comprising means for providing to the caller routing information for traveling between the location of the caller to the location of the receiver.
41. The system of claim 40 wherein said routing information includes one of graphical mapping information, text information, and turn-by-turn direction information.
42. The system of claim 25, wherein the caller position information is retrieved from a remote database.
43. The system of claim 34, wherein the receiver position information is retrieved from a remote database.
44. The system of claim 26, further comprising means for transmitting to the caller the caller position information.
45. The system of claim 26, further comprising means for verifying the privacy preference of the caller.
46. The system of claim 26, further comprising means for verifying the privacy preference of the receiver.
47. The system of claim 26, wherein said telecommunications network is a wireless communication network, and wherein the caller information is received from a wireless communication device.
48. The system of claim 47, wherein said wireless communication device is one of a wireless telephone, a personal digital assistant, and a portable computer.
49. The system of claim 26, wherein said telecommunications network is a wireless communication network, and wherein the receiver information is received from a wireless communication device.
50. The system of claim 49, wherein said wireless communication device is one of a wireless telephone, a personal digital assistant, and a portable computer.
51. A method of providing position information of a receiver to a caller using a telecommunication network, said method comprising the steps of:
receiving from the caller via the telecommunication network a receiver information, said receiver information including a unique identification information of the receiver;
using the received receiver information, retrieve the receiver position information; and transmitting to the caller the receiver position information.

52. The method of claim 51, further comprising the step of authenticating the caller identification.

54. The method of claim 51, further comprising the step of authenticating the receiver information.
55. The method of claim 51, further comprising the step of transmitting the receiver position information to a display device for display.
56. The method of claim 51, further comprising the step of transmitting the receiver position information to a telematics device.
57. The method of claim 51, wherein the receiver position information includes one of graphical mapping information, longitudinal and latitudinal information, altitude information, and address.
58. The method of claim 51, wherein the receiver position information includes position information of a fixed location nearby the receiver.
59. The method of claim 51, further comprising the steps of:
receiving caller information, said caller information including at least one of a caller identification information and the phone number information of the caller; and using the caller information to retrieve a caller position information, said caller position information indicating a location of the caller.

60. The method of claim 59, further comprising the step of transmitting to the receiver the caller position information.

63. The method of claim 59, further comprising the step of providing to the caller routing information for traveling between the location of the caller to the location of the receiver.
64. The method of claim 63, wherein said routing information includes one of graphical mapping information, text information, and turn-by-turn direction information.
65. The method of claim 59, further comprising the step of providing to the receiver routing information for traveling between the location of the caller to the location of the receiver.
66. The method of claim 65, wherein said routing information includes one of graphical mapping information, text information, and turn-by-turn direction information.
67. The method of claim 51, wherein the receiver position information is retrieved from a remote database.
68. The method of claim 59, wherein the caller -position information is retrieved from a remote database.
69. The method of claim 51, further comprising the step of transmitting to the receiver the receiver position information.
70. The method of claim 51, further comprising the step of verifying the privacy preference of the receiver.
71. The method of claim 51, further comprising the step of verifying the privacy preference of the caller.
72. The method of claim 51, wherein said telecommunications network is a wireless communication network, and wherein the receiver information is received from a wireless communication device.
73. The method of claim 72, wherein said wireless communication device is one of a wireless telephone, a personal digital assistant, and a portable computer.
74. The method of claim 59, wherein said telecommunications network is a wireless communication network, and wherein the caller information is received from a wireless communication device.
75. The method of claim 74, wherein said wireless communication device is one of a wireless telephone, a personal digital assistant, and a portable computer.
76. A system of providing position information of a receiver to a caller using a telecommunication network, said system comprising:
means for receiving from the caller via the telecommunication network a receiver information, said receiver information including a unique identification information of the receiver;
means for using the received receiver information to retrieve the receiver position information; and means for transmitting to the caller the receiver position information.

77. The system of claim 76, further comprising means for authenticating the caller identification.

80. The system of claim 76, further comprising means for transmitting the receiver position information to a display device for display.
81. The system of claim 76, further comprising means for transmitting the receiver position information to a telematics device.
82. The system of claim 76, wherein the receiver position information includes one of graphical mapping information, longitudinal and latitudinal information, altitude information, and address.
83. The system of claim 76, wherein the receiver position information includes position information of a fixed location nearby the receiver.
84. The system of claim 76, further comprising:
means for receiving caller information, said caller information including at least one of a caller identification information and the phone number information of the caller; and means for using the caller information to retrieve a caller position information, said caller position information indicating a location of the caller.

88. The system of claim 84, further comprising means for providing to the caller routing information for traveling between the location of the caller to the location of the receiver.
89. The system of claim 88, wherein said routing information includes one of graphical mapping information, text information, and turn-by-turn direction information.
90. The system of claim 84, further comprising means for providing to the receiver routing information for traveling between the location of the caller to the location of the receiver.
91. The system of claim 90, wherein said routing information includes one of graphical mapping information, text information, and turn-by-turn direction information.
92. The system of claim 76, wherein the receiver position information is retrieved from a remote database.
93. The system of claim 84, wherein the caller position information is retrieved from a remote database.
94. The system of claim 76, further comprising means for transmitting to the receiver the receiver position information.
95. The system of claim 76, further comprising means for verifying the privacy preference of the receiver.
96. The system of claim 76, further comprising means for verifying the privacy preference of the caller.
97. The system of claim 76, wherein said telecommunications network is a wireless communication network, and wherein the receiver information is received from a wireless communication device.
98. The system of claim 97, wherein said wireless communication device is one of a wireless telephone, a personal digital assistant, and a portable computer.
99. The method of claim 84, wherein said telecommunications network is a wireless communication network, and wherein the caller information is received from a wireless communication device.
100. The method of claim 99, wherein said wireless communication device is one of a wireless telephone, a personal digital assistant, and a portable computer.
101. A method for providing position information between a caller and a receiver using a communication network, said method comprising the steps of:
receiving caller information, said caller information including a caller identification information of the caller;
receiving receiver information, said receiver information including a unique identification information of the receiver;
using the receiver caller information, retrieve a caller position information, said caller position information indicating the location of the caller;
using the unique identification information of the receiver information, locating within the communication network a receiver data terminal address of the receiver, wherein the receiver data terminal is operatively coupled to the communication network; and transmitting to the receiver data terminal the caller position information.

using the receiver caller information, retrieve a caller position information, said caller position information indicating the location of the caller;
using the unique identification information of the receiver information, locating within the communication network a receiver data terminal address of the receiver, wherein the receiver data terminal is operatively coupled to the communication network; and transmitting to the receiver data terminal the caller position information.
102. The method of claim 101, further comprising the step of authenticating the data terminal address of the receiver.
103. The method of claim 101, wherein the unique identification information of the receiver is a phone number of the receiver.
104. The method of claim 101, wherein the data terminal address of the receiver is an Internet address.
105. The method of claim 101, wherein said communications network is a wireless communications network.
106. A system for providing position information between a caller and a receiver using a communication network, said system comprising:
means for receiving caller information, said caller information including a caller identification information of the caller;
means for receiving receiver information, said receiver information including a unique identification information of the receiver;
means for using the receiver caller information to retrieve a caller position information, said caller position information indicating the location of the caller;
means for using the unique identification information of the receiver information to locate within the communication network a receiver data terminal address of the receiver, wherein the receiver data terminal is operatively coupled to the communication network; and means for transmitting to the receiver data terminal the caller position information.

means for receiving receiver information, said receiver information including a unique identification information of the receiver;
means for using the receiver caller information to retrieve a caller position information, said caller position information indicating the location of the caller;
means for using the unique identification information of the receiver information to locate within the communication network a receiver data terminal address of the receiver, wherein the receiver data terminal is operatively coupled to the communication network; and means for transmitting to the receiver data terminal the caller position information.
107. The system of claim 106, further comprising means for authenticating the data terminal address of the receiver.
108. The system of claim 106, wherein the unique identification information of the receiver is a phone number of the receiver.
109. The system of claim 106, wherein the data terminal address of the receiver is an Internet address.
110. The system of claim 106, wherein said communications network is a wireless communications network.
