Abstract
The present invention discloses a system and a method for selecting, accessi ng and retrieving directly from a physical (i.e., hard-copy) document, hypertex t documents located on a user workstation or on one or a plurality of servers connected to a communication network, and for displaying the retrieved hypertext documents over said physical document. The information is accessed by the user simply by touching with a finger items (i.e., words, letters, symbols, pictures, icons, ...) that are highlighted on an electronic hyperte xt document displayed over the physical document. The method, for use in a user system comprises the steps of: - identifying a physical document, this physical document comprising one or a plurality of pages; - identifying a pa ge of said physical document; - identifying and locating an electronic document associated with the identified page referring to a document hyperlink table; said document hyperlink table comprising for each page of the physical document the identification and location of an electronic document; - accessing and retrieving the electronic document associated with the identified page; - displaying the retrieved electronic document by means of an opto-touch foil placed over the identified page.
Claims (14)
1. A method of selecting electronic information from a physical document (101), and for displaying said selected electronic information over this physical document, said method, for use in a user system (103) comprising the steps of:
.cndot. identifying (401) a physical document (501, 601, 801), said physical document comprising one or a plurality of pages (602, 802);
.cndot. identifying (402) a page (602, 802) of said physical document;
.cndot. identifying and locating (404) an electronic document associated with the identified page referring to a document hyperlink table; said document hyperlink table comprising for each page of the physical document the identification and location of an electronic document;
.cndot. accessing and retrieving (405) the electronic document associated with the identified page;
.cndot. displaying (406) the retrieved electronic document by means of an opto-touch foil (102, 200, 703, 806) placed over the identified page (802).
.cndot. identifying (401) a physical document (501, 601, 801), said physical document comprising one or a plurality of pages (602, 802);
.cndot. identifying (402) a page (602, 802) of said physical document;
.cndot. identifying and locating (404) an electronic document associated with the identified page referring to a document hyperlink table; said document hyperlink table comprising for each page of the physical document the identification and location of an electronic document;
.cndot. accessing and retrieving (405) the electronic document associated with the identified page;
.cndot. displaying (406) the retrieved electronic document by means of an opto-touch foil (102, 200, 703, 806) placed over the identified page (802).
2. The method according to the preceding claim wherein the electronic document associated with the identified page comprises one or a plurality of hyperlinked items, said method comprising the further steps of:
.cndot. creating (407) a page hyperlink table for the identified page (902);
.cndot. identifying one or a plurality of hyperlinked items (904) in the electronic document associated with the identified page (902);
for each identified hyperlinked item:
.cndot. identifying and locating information associated with said hyperlinked items (904);
.cndot. determining the position on the opto-touch foil (905) of said identified hyperlinked item (904);
.cndot. storing in the page hyperlink table, the identification and location of the information associated with said hyperlinked item and the position of said hyperlinked item on the opto-touch foil (905).
.cndot. creating (407) a page hyperlink table for the identified page (902);
.cndot. identifying one or a plurality of hyperlinked items (904) in the electronic document associated with the identified page (902);
for each identified hyperlinked item:
.cndot. identifying and locating information associated with said hyperlinked items (904);
.cndot. determining the position on the opto-touch foil (905) of said identified hyperlinked item (904);
.cndot. storing in the page hyperlink table, the identification and location of the information associated with said hyperlinked item and the position of said hyperlinked item on the opto-touch foil (905).
3. The method according to any one of the preceding claims comprising the further steps of:
.cndot. determining (409) the position of a point pressed on said opto-touch foil (1004);
said opto-touch foil (1004) being placed and aligned over the identified page (1002) of the physical document (1001 ); said opto-touch foil being pressed (408) at a point corresponding to a selected hyperlinked item (1003);
.cndot. identifying (410) the selected hyperlinked item corresponding to the position of the point pressed on said opto-touch foil (1004) referring to a page hyperlink table, said hyperlink table comprising the position, on the opto-touch foil, of each hyperlinked item of the electronic document associated with the identified page;
.cndot. identifying and locating information associated with the selected hyperlinked item referring to the page hyperlink table, said hyperlink table comprising for each hyperlinked item of each page of the document the identification and location of the information associated with the hyperlinked item;
.cndot. accessing and retrieving the information associated with the selected hyperlinked item;
.cndot. displaying the retrieved information by means of the opto-touch foil (1004) placed over the identified page (1002).
.cndot. determining (409) the position of a point pressed on said opto-touch foil (1004);
said opto-touch foil (1004) being placed and aligned over the identified page (1002) of the physical document (1001 ); said opto-touch foil being pressed (408) at a point corresponding to a selected hyperlinked item (1003);
.cndot. identifying (410) the selected hyperlinked item corresponding to the position of the point pressed on said opto-touch foil (1004) referring to a page hyperlink table, said hyperlink table comprising the position, on the opto-touch foil, of each hyperlinked item of the electronic document associated with the identified page;
.cndot. identifying and locating information associated with the selected hyperlinked item referring to the page hyperlink table, said hyperlink table comprising for each hyperlinked item of each page of the document the identification and location of the information associated with the hyperlinked item;
.cndot. accessing and retrieving the information associated with the selected hyperlinked item;
.cndot. displaying the retrieved information by means of the opto-touch foil (1004) placed over the identified page (1002).

The method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein said user system (103) is connected to a communication network (104) comprising one or plurality of servers (105), and wherein the information associated with the hyperlinked items are located on said one or plurality of servers (105) or locally on the user system.
5. The method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the information associated with the hyperlinked items are located on the user system (103).
6. The method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the step of identifying and locating information associated with the selected hyperlinked item referring to said page hyperlink table comprises the step of:
.cndot. determining a destination address in the communication network where the information associated with the selected hyperlinked item can be accessed referring to said page hyperlink table.

7. The method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein:
.cndot. said communication network (104) is an Internet Protocol (IP) network;
.cndot. said servers (105) are Web servers;
.cndot. said user system (103) comprises a Web browser;
.cndot. said destination address is an Uniform Resource Locator (URL address);
.cndot. said information is a Web page.

The method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the physical document is a hard-copy document or any type of physical surface such as an engraved, printed, painted, written surface, of any material such as paper, wood, plastic and of any form such as a newspaper, magazine, book, catalog, geographical map, photograph, painting.
9. The method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the document hyperlink table associated with the physical document comprises additional information related to said document such as title, author, date and wherein the method comprises the further step of:
.cndot. accessing said additional information.
.cndot. accessing said additional information.
10. The method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the identified page is a portion said physical document.
11. A user system comprising means adapted for carrying out the method according to any one of the preceding claims.
12. A system comprising:
.cndot. an opto-touch foil to be placed over a page of a physical document;
.cndot. a user system according to the preceding claim;
.cndot. a connection between said opto-touch foil and said user system.
.cndot. an opto-touch foil to be placed over a page of a physical document;
.cndot. a user system according to the preceding claim;
.cndot. a connection between said opto-touch foil and said user system.
13. The system according to the preceding claim wherein the opto-touch foil is sensible to the pressure exercised over any point of its surface and comprises a transparent film with light emitting elements for displaying electronic information.
14. A computer program comprising computer readable instructions for carrying out the method according to any one of claims 1 to 10.
