Abstract

A bathroom flusher (10) includes a body having an inlet (12) in communication with a supply line and an outlet (16) in communication with a flush conduit, a valve assembly in the body positioned to close water flow between the inlet and the outlet upon sealing action of a moving member (60, 60A, 60B, 60C, 130, 210, 215, 526 or 628) at a valve seat (70, 70A, 140, 209, 251A, 526 or 625) thereby controlling flow from the inlet to the outlet, and an actuator (62) for actuating operation of the moving member. The bathroom flusher includes one of several novel sensors and is controlled by one of several novel controllers, as described. The controllers may execute a novel control algorithm.

Claims (12)

1. An externally operated valve comprising:
a valve body;
a valve closure element for moving between an open state enabling flow from an inlet to an outlet and a closed state preventing said flow from said inlet to said outlet; and an actuator attached to move with said valve element operating between said open state and said closed state.
2. An electrically operated valve, comprising:
a valve body having a water inlet and a water outlet, a valve closure element located within said valve body and constructed to move between an open state enabling water flow from said inlet to said outlet and a closed state preventing said water flow from said inlet to said outlet;
an electrical actuator attached to move with said valve element including a sealing member; and a pilot mechanism constructed to control said movement of said valve element between said open state and said closed state based on a position of said sealing member.
3. The electrically operated valve of claim 2 wherein said valve closure element is a valve diaphragm.
4. The electrically operated valve of claim 3 wherein said pilot mechanism and said electrical actuator are attached to said diaphragm and arranged to move with said diaphragm between said open and said closed state.
5. The electrically operated valve of claim 3 wherein said pilot mechanism includes a pilot diaphragm controlled by said electrical actuator.
6. The electrically operated valve of claim 5 wherein said valve diaphragm and said pilot mechanism, including said pilot diaphragm, are arranged to form a hydraulic amplifier having two fluid stages.
7. The electrically operated valve of claim 2 wherein said valve element is a valve piston.
8. The electrically operated valve of claim 7 wherein said pilot mechanism and said electrical actuator are attached to said valve piston and arranged to move with said diaphragm between said open and said closed state.
9. The electrically operated valve of claim 7 wherein said pilot mechanism includes a pilot piston controlled by said electrical actuator.
10. The electrically operated valve of claim 9 wherein said valve piston and said pilot mechanism, including said pilot piston, are arranged to form a hydraulic amplifier having two fluid stages.
11. The electrically operated valve of claim 7 wherein said pilot mechanism includes a pilot diaphragm controlled by said electrical actuator.
12. The electrically operated valve of claim 2 further including a filter for filtering particles located in water flowing between said water inlet and said water outlet.

14. The electrically operated valve of claim 2 wherein operation of said electrical actuator is triggered by an optical sensor or capacitive sensor or ultrasonic sensor.

15. The electrically operated valve of claim 2 wherein said electrical actuator is a solenoid (such as a latching solenoid or a non-latching solenoid) .58 16. The electrically operated valve of claim 2 wherein said electrical actuator is a solenoid end said sealing member is a plunger.

17. A bathroom flushes comprising:
a body having en inlet and an outlet, a valve assembly in said body positioned to close water flow between said inlet and outlet upon sealing action of a moving member at a valve seat thereby controlling flow from said inset to said outlet, and an actuator for actuating operation of said moving member.

18. The bathroom flusher of claim 17 wherein said moving member a high flow rate diaphragm constructed to linearly move within a valve cavity.

19. The bathroom flusher of claim 17 wherein said moving member is a diaphragm.

20. The bathroom flusher of claim 17 wherein said moving member is a piston.

21. The bathroom flusher of claim 18, 19 or 20 further including a cover mounted upon said body and defining a pressure chamber with said valve assembly.

22. The bathroom flusher of claim 27 further including a flexible member fixed relative to said cover at one end thereof, the other end of said flexible member being attached to a movable member of said valve assembly, wherein there is a passage in said flexible member arranged to reduce pressure in said pressure chamber.

23. The bathroom flusher of claim 22 wherein said flexible member is a hollow tube, 24. The bathroom flusher of claim 23 including a spring positioned within said hollow tube.

25. The bathroom flusher of claim 24 wherein said spring is a coiled spring.

26. The bathroom flusher of claim 24 wherein said actuator is an isolated (sealed) actuator 27. The bathroom flusher of claim 18, 19 or 29 including an automatic flout-control system 28. An automatic flow-control system comprising:
an electric valve operable by application of control signals thereto between an open position, in which it permits fluid flow therethrough, and a closed position, in which it prevents fluid flaw therethrough; and a control circuit, including a tight detector for detecting presence of an object.

29. An automatic flow-control system comprising:
an electric valve operable by application of control signals thereto between an open position, in which it permits fluid flow therethrough; and a closed position, in which it prevents fluid flow therethrough; and a control circuit, including an light detector and an light source light reflected from the target region.

38. The automatic flow-control system of claim 29 wherein the control circuit is operable in a normal mode, in which it operates the valve in response to the infrared-light detector's reception of the reflected infrared light, and in a start-up mode, in which it instead drives the combination LED in response to the infrared-light detectors reception of the reflected infrared light.

31. The automatic flow-control system of claim 29 wherein:
the LED combination includes first and second terminals;
the control circuit includes:
a power supply having positive and negative sides;
positive-path and negative-path transistors associated with each terminal, each positive-path transistor controlling a path from the terminal with which it is associated to the power supply's positive side;
negative-path transistors associated with each terminal, each negative-path transistor controlling a path from the terminal with which it is associated to the power supply's negative side;
to drive the LED combination in the first direction, the control circuit drives into conduction the positive-path transistor associated with the first terminal and drives into conduction the negative-path transistor associated with the second terminal; and to drive the LED combination in the second direction, the central circuit drives into conduction the positive-path transistor associated with the second terminal and drives into conduction the negative-path transistor associated with the first terminal.

32. The automatic flow-control system of claim 31 wherein the control circuit is operable in a normal mode, in which it operates the valve in response to the infrared-light detector's reception of the reflected infrared light, and in a start-up mode, in which it instead drives the combination LED in response to the infrared-tight detectors reception of the inflected infrared light.

33. An electromagnetic actuator system, comprising:
an actuator including a solenoid coil and an armature housing constructed and arranged to receive in a movable relationship an armature;

a controller coupled to a power driver constructed to provide a drive signal to said solenoid coil for displacing said armature and thereby open or close a valve passage far fluid flow; and an actuator sensor constructed and arranged to sense a position of said armature and provide a signed to said controller.

34. The actuator system of claim 33 wherein said sensor is constructed to detect voltage induced by movement of said armature.

35. The actuator system of claim 34 wherein said sensor is constructed and arranged to detect changes to said drive signal due to the movement of said armature.

36. The actuator system of claim 34 wherein said sensor includes a resistor arranged to receive at least a portion of said drive signal, and a voltmeter constructed to measure voltage across said resistor.

37. The actuator system of claim 34 wherein said sensor includes a coil sensor constructed and arranged to detect said voltage induced by movement of said armature.

38. The actuator system of claim 34 wherein said coil sensor is connected in a feedback arrangement to a signal conditioner providing conditioned signal to said controller.

39. The actuator system of claim 38 wherein said signal conditioner includes a preamplifier and a low-pass filter.

40. The actuator system of claim 34 wherein said sensor includes two coil sensors each constructed and arranged to dated said voltage induced by movement of said armature.

41. The actuator system of claim 40 wherein said coil sensors one connected in a feedback arrangement to a differential amplifier constructed to provide a differential signal to said controller.

42. The actuator system of claim 33 wherein said actuator sensor includes an optical sensor.

43. The actuator system of claim 33 wherein said actuator sensor includes a capacitance sensor.

44. The actuator system of claim 33 wherein said actuator sensor includes a bridge for sensitively detecting a signs! change due to movement of said armature.

45. The actuator system of claim 33 wherein said armature housing is constructed and arranged for a linear displacement of said armature upon said solenoid receiving said drive signal.

46. The actuator system of claim 45 wherein said actuator is a latching actuator constructed to maintain said armature in said open passage state without any drive signal being delivered to said solenoid soil.

47. The actuator system of claim 46 wherein said latching actuator includes a permanent magnet arranged to maintain said armature in said open passage stale.

48. The actuator system of claim 47 wherein said latching actuator further includes a bias spring positioned and arranged to bias said armature toward an extended position providing a close passage state without any drive signal being delivered to said solenoid roll.

49. The actuator system of claim 33 further including a presence sensor coupled to said controller.

50. A valve device, comprising:

a fluid input port and a fluid output port;
a valve body defining a valve cavity and including a valve closure surface;
and a from assembly providing two pressure zones and being movable within said valve cavity with respect a guiding member, said from assembly being constructed to move to an open position enabling fluid flow from said fluid input port to said fluid output port upon reduction of pressure in a first of said pressure zones; and being constructed to move to a closed position, upon increase of pressure in said first pressure zone, creating a seal at said valve closure surface.

51. The valve device of claim 50, wherein said two pressure zones include two chambers separated by said from assembly and wherein said first pressure zone includes a pilot chamber.

52. The valve device of claim 51 including an operator constructed and arranged to release pressure in said pilot chamber and thereby initiate movement of said from member from said closed position to said open position.

53. The valve device of claim 52, wherein said operator includes a latching actuator.

54. The valve device of claim 52, wherein said operator includes a non-latching actuator.
