Abstract
A disclosed method comprises scanning a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag 50 on a package to generate scanned data, and generating a handling instruction for the package based on the scanned data. The handling instruction can be executed to route the package to a tip position within a hub facility for directing the package to the next location along its route, and/or to pre-load the package in a vehicle for delivery to the package's final destination. Related systems and computer-readable media are also disclosed.
Claims (47)
1. A method characterized by:
receiving a package to be shipped to an addressee, wherein the package is identified by a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag 50 affixed to the package, and the RFID tag is pre-programmed to encode shipping data for the package;
identifying the shipping data by scanning the RFID tag 50 affixed to the package;
generating a handling instruction for the package based on the shipping data; and handling the package to sort and deliver the package to the addressee based an the handling instruction.
receiving a package to be shipped to an addressee, wherein the package is identified by a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag 50 affixed to the package, and the RFID tag is pre-programmed to encode shipping data for the package;
identifying the shipping data by scanning the RFID tag 50 affixed to the package;
generating a handling instruction for the package based on the shipping data; and handling the package to sort and deliver the package to the addressee based an the handling instruction.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the scanning is performed by conveying the package on a belt 15 passed an interrogator 20 that identifies shipping data by scanning the RFID tag 50.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the handling instruction is executed by a hub control system 30 to convey the package to a tip position for transport to a destination indicated by the shipping data.
4. A method as claimed in claim 3 wherein the hub control system 30 uses a hub master file to determine the tip position for the package based on the shipping data.
5. A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein the shipping data comprises an RFTD identifier 55, and the hub control system 30 cannot generate the handling instruction based an the shipping data, and forwards the RFTD
identifier 55 to a package information database 65 for use as an index to retrieve package information data to generate the handling instruction.

6. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the handling instruction comprises a sort handling instruction.
7. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the handling comprises sorting the package for delivery to a hub facility based on the shipping data.
8. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the handling instruction comprises a pre-loud handling instruction.
9. A method as claimed in claim 1 further characterized by:
sorting the package for delivery to an addressee identified by the shipping data based on the handling instruction.

10. A method as claimed in claim 1 further characterized by:
storing the shipping data in a package tracking database 95.

11. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the shipping data comprises package information data including an address, further characterized by:
validating the address using a street and consignee alias database 85 of an address management system 70.

12. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the shipping data comprises package information data for which no valid address can be determined, the method further characterized by:
key-entering data based on the shipping label associated with the package to generate the handling instruction.

13. A method as claimed in claim 1 further characterized by:
capturing with a camera an image of the package for use by an operator to determine and key-enter a valid address for the package in case the shipping data does not comprise sufficient data to determine the address to which the package is to be shipped.

14. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the RFID tag 50 is scanned at multiple locations to generate shipping data used by a hub control system 30 to route the package on conveyor belts 15 within a hub facility to a tip position indicated by the shipping data.
15. A method as claimed in claim 14 further characterized by:
updating a package tracking database 95 based on the hub control system 30 delivering the package to a tip position in a hub facility.

16. A method as claimed in claim 15 further characterized by:
notifying an entity involved in the shipment of the package that the package has been delivered to the tip position.

17. A method as claimed in claim 16 wherein the entity is a shipper of a package.
18. A method as claimed in claim 16 wherein the entity is the addressee of a package.
19. A method as claimed in claim 16 wherein the entity is another hub facility.
20. A method as claimed in claim 15 wherein the handling instruction is generated by using the shipping data to retrieve the handling instruction from a load plan stored in a database.
21. A method as claimed in claim 1 further characterized by estimating time of delivery of the package based on the shipping data; and notifying the shipper and/or consignee of the estimated time of delivery of the package.
22. A package sortation system characterized by:
at least one conveyor to carry and move at least one package having a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag and a shipping label identifying an addressee to which the package is to be shipped;
at least one RFID interrogator 20 configured to read the RFID tag 50 on the package to generate scanned darn for shipping the package to the addressee indicated by the shipping label;
a hub control system 30 configured to receive the scanned data and assign a handling instruction based at least in pall on the scanned data, the handling instruction including a sort destination for the package;
at least one machine controller associated with the conveyor and coupled to the huh control system, the machine controller receiving the handling instruction from the hub control system and generating a control signal; and at least one sorting device coupled to the machine controller controlling the conveyor based on the control signal to deliver the package to the sort destination.

at least one RFID interrogator 20 configured to read the RFID tag 50 on the package to generate scanned darn for shipping the package to the addressee indicated by the shipping label;
a hub control system 30 configured to receive the scanned data and assign a handling instruction based at least in pall on the scanned data, the handling instruction including a sort destination for the package;
at least one machine controller associated with the conveyor and coupled to the huh control system, the machine controller receiving the handling instruction from the hub control system and generating a control signal; and at least one sorting device coupled to the machine controller controlling the conveyor based on the control signal to deliver the package to the sort destination.
23. A package sortation system 10 as claimed in claim 22 wherein the scanned data includes an RFID identifier 55, the system further characterized by:
an indexed data server 35 configured to communicate with the hub control system 30 to receive the RFID identifier 55, the indexed data server using the RFID identifier 55 to retrieve the handling instruction provided to the hub control system 30.

24. A package sortation system 10 as claimed in claim 22 further characterized by:
a printer configured to receive the handling instruction and generate a label based on the handling instruction, the label applied to the package for use in sorting and directing the package to the sort destination indicated by the handling instruction.

25. A package sortation system 10 as claimed in claim 22 wherein the scanned data includes an RFID identifier 55, the system further characterized by:
a server 25, 33 storing a package information database 65 and configured to receive and use the RFID identifier 55 to retrieve package information data from the package information database 65, the server 25, 35 providing the package information data to the hub control system 30 for use in generating the handling instruction.

26. A package sortation system 10 as claimed is claim 22 wherein the scanned data includes package information data used by the hub control system to generate the handling instruction.
27. A package sortation system 10 as claimed in claim 22 wherein the hub control systems 30 uses a package service level and at least part of the package destination address determined from the scanned data to assign the handling instruction.
28. A package sortation system 10 as claimed in claim 22 wherein the sort destination associated with a handling instruction is determined by information from a hub maser file based on the scanned data.
29. A package sortation system 10 as claimed in claim 22 wherein the hub control system 30 comprises a hub operating application configured to receive a load plan and control the movement of packages based at least in part on the load plan, the system further characterized by:
an indexed data server 35 in communication with the hub operating application, the indexed data server configured to receive scanned data including the RFID identifier 55 and to use the RFID identifier 55 to obtain package information from a package information database 65;
a sort destination server 115 in communication with the indexed data server 35 to determine the sort destination of a package;
one or mare sort position scanners 120 configured to track the location of packages; and the machine controller 45 in communication with the one or more sort position scanners 120 and the sort destination server 115 to direct the package to the sort destination.
an indexed data server 35 in communication with the hub operating application, the indexed data server configured to receive scanned data including the RFID identifier 55 and to use the RFID identifier 55 to obtain package information from a package information database 65;
a sort destination server 115 in communication with the indexed data server 35 to determine the sort destination of a package;
one or mare sort position scanners 120 configured to track the location of packages; and the machine controller 45 in communication with the one or more sort position scanners 120 and the sort destination server 115 to direct the package to the sort destination.
30. A system for performing a pre-load operation, the system characterized by:
a dispatch planning system 205 configured to generate it dispatch plan;
a flexible data capture system 215 configured to obtain information about packages to be pre-loaded, the flexible data capture system 215 including an RFID interrogator 20 configured to read an RFID tag 50 associated with a package to generate scanned data; and a pre-lead assist system 210 configured to match the scanned data to the dispatch plan and assign a handling instruction for routing the package to its destination.

a flexible data capture system 215 configured to obtain information about packages to be pre-loaded, the flexible data capture system 215 including an RFID interrogator 20 configured to read an RFID tag 50 associated with a package to generate scanned data; and a pre-lead assist system 210 configured to match the scanned data to the dispatch plan and assign a handling instruction for routing the package to its destination.
31. A system as claimed in claim 30 further characterized by:
a printer configured to print a label that contains the handling instruction, the label applied to a respective one of the packages for use in routing the package to its destination.

32. A system as claimed in claim 30 further characterized by:
an address management system 70 configured to validate address information from the dispatch plan and the packages.

33. A system as claimed in claim 30 wherein the scanned data comprises an RFID identifier 55 and the flexible data capture system 215 uses the RFID identifier 55 as an index into a package information system 10 to obtain information about the package.

A system as claimed in claim 30 wherein the scanned data comprises an RFID identifier 55 and the flexible data capture system 215 uses the RFID identifier 55 as an index into a package information system 65 to obtain a destination address and service level for the package, and the pre-load assist system 210 is configured to match the package destination address and service level to the dispatch plan to assign the handling instruction.
35. A system as claimed in claim 30 wherein the pre-load assist system 210 is further configured to monitor the assignment of work to a load including at least one package, and generate a load manifest for the load.
36. A system as claimed in claim 35 further characterized by:
an enhanced delivery information acquisition device (DIAD) download system 220 configured to transfer the load manifest to a DIAD unit.

37. A system as claimed in claim 35 further characterized by:
a server 210 executing a package notification application 270 to receive the load manifest, estimate the time at which each unit of work will be completed and notify a shipper and/or consignee of the work and time estimate.

A system as claimed in claim 37 wherein the package notification application 270 is configured to compare the load manifest against the dispatch plan to determine the sequence in which the work associated with the load will be performed; and the package notification application is also configured to use work measurement information to estimate the time at which the work assigned to a load will be performed; and the package notification application 270 is further configured to notify at least one of a shipper and a consignee of the estimate of time when the work will be performed.
39. A system as claimed in claim 37 wherein the package notification application 270 is additionally configured to aggregate packages bound for a consignee, and send a single notification to the consignee with information including an estimated delivery time for each of the aggregated inbound packages.
40. A system as claimed in claim 37 wherein the package notification application 270 is additionally configured to aggregate packages hound for a consignee, and seed a single notification to the consignee with information including estimated work for each of the aggregated inbound packages.
41. A system as claimed in claim 37 wherein the package notification application 270 is additionally configured to aggregate packages sent by a single shipper, and send a single notification to the shipper with data indicating an estimated delivery time for each of the aggregated packages.

A computer-readable medium 20, 40 having a computer program executable by a computer to scan at least one radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag 55 affixed to a respective package to generate scanned data for use in routing the package to a sort destination, the package including a shipping label indicating an addressee to which the package is to be shipped, and for generating a handling instruction for the package to ship the package to the address indicated on the shipping label, based on the scanned data.
43. A computer-readable medium 20, 40 as claimed in claim 42 wherein the scanned data comprises an RFID identifier.
44. A computer-readable medium 20, 40 as claimed in claim 42 wherein the scanned data comprises package information data indicating the destination of the package.
45. A computer-readable medium 30, 35 having a computer program executable by a computer to receive scanned data from a radio-frequency identification (RFID) interrogator 20 generated by scanning an RFID tag 50 on a package having a shipping label identifying an addressee to which the package is to be shipped, and to generate a handling instruction executable by a hub control system to transport the package to a sort destination, based an scanned data.
46. A computer-readable medium 30, 35 as claimed in claim 45 wherein the handling instruction can be executed by a hub control system 10 to convey the package to a tip position for transport to a destination indicated by the scanned data.
47. A method as claimed in claim 45 wherein the scanned data comprises an RFID identifier 55, and the computer program is executed to forward the RFID identifier 55 to a package information database 65 far use as an index to retrieve package information data to generate the handling instruction.
