Abstract

Water-soluble products and methods of making and using water~soluble product s are disclosed.

Claims (66)

1. A multiple-use, launderable coverall comprising water-soluble material.
2. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein the coverall is pre-washed.
3. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein the coverall is capable of being washed in an aqueous bath up to about 20 times without negatively impacting structural integrity of the coverall.
4. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein the water-soluble material comprises polyvinyl alcohol with or without acetyl groups, cross-linked or uncross linked.
5. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein the coverall consists essentially of water-soluble material.
6. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein the coverall consists of water-soluble material.
7. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein the coverall comprises a close system.
8. The coverall of Claim 7, wherein the closure system comprises one or more zippers, drawstrings, snaps, buttons, adhesives, hoop and loop materials, or a combination thereof.
9. The coverall of Claim 7, wherein the closure system comprises water-soluble material, water-dispersible material, or a combination thereof.
10. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein the coverall comprises two or more fabric sheets joined to one another with one or more sheet fastening devices.
11. The cover all of Claim 10, wherein the one or more sheet fastening devices comprise thread, adhesives, hoop and loop materials, or a combination thereof.
12. The coverall of Claim 10, wherein the one or more sheet fastening devices comprises water-soluble material, water-dispersible material, or a combination thereof.
13. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein the coverall comprises at least one single ply fabric, double ply fabric, fabric/film laminate, or combination thereof.
14. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein the coverall is pre-treated with a chemical treatment to enhance one or more properties selected from impermeability, permeability, flame resistance, moisture vapor permeability, tear strength, and stain resistance.
15. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein the coverall comprises one or more pockets.
16. The coverall of Claim 15, wherein the coverall comprises up to 15 pockets.
17. The coverall of Claim 15, wherein the coverall comprises 11 pockets for dosimetry use.
18. The coverall of Claim 17, wherein the pockets are located along the coverall as shown in Figures 2A and 2B.
19. The coverall of Claim 15, wherein at least one of the one or more pockets has a flap closure.
20. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein the coverall comprises pre-shrunk fabrics having a fabric shrinkage of less than about 5% when exposed to a washing cycle.
21. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein the coverall comprises nonwoven fabric substantially free of lint and static.
22. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the coverall is dyed or printed.
23. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein the coverall further comprises at least one of an integral hood, integral booties, or a combination thereof.
24. The coverall of Claim 1, wherein the coverall further comprises a wash counter integrally connected to the coverall.
25. The coverall of Claim 24, wherein the wash counter comprises water-soluble material, water-dispersible material, or a combination thereof.
26. The coverall of Claim 24, wherein the wash counter comprises a detachable strip of coverall material.
27. A dosimetry coverall having eleven pockets as shown in FIGS. 2A-2B.
28. The dosimetry coverall of Claim 27, wherein the coverall is a single-use coverall.
29. The single-use dosimetry coverall of Claim 28, wherein the coverall comprises at least 50 parts by weight (pbw) of water-soluble materials, based on a total weight of the single-use coverall.
30. The single-use dosimetry coverall of Claim 28, wherein the coverall consists essentially of water-soluble materials.
31. The single-use dosimetry coverall of Claim 28, wherein the coverall consists of water-soluble materials.
32. A reusable coverall for use in the nuclear industry, wherein after the coverall is (i) exposed to one or more radioactive materials at an exposure level of at least 1,000,000 disintegrations per minute as measured by an automatic laundry monitor and (ii) subsequently washed, the washed reusable coverall has a contamination level of less than 25,000 disintegrations per minute as measured by the same automatic laundry monitor.
33. The reusable coverall of Claim 32, wherein the washed reusable coverall has a contamination level of less than 5,000 disintegrations per minute as measured by the same automatic laundry monitor.
34. The reusable coverall of Claim 32, wherein the reusable coverall comprises water-soluble material.
35. The reusable coverall of Claim 34, wherein the water-soluble material comprises polyvinyl alcohol with or without acetyl groups, cross-linked or uncross-linked.
36. A method of reducing an amount of radioactive waste generated by at least one contaminated product, wherein the at least one contaminated product comprises (i) the multiple-use, launderable coverall of Claim 1, (ii) the reusable coverall of Claim 32, or (iii) a combination thereof, wherein said method comprises:

(a) washing the at least one contaminated product in an aqueous bath under washing condition such that the at least one product does not become soluble, producing a washed product;
(b) using the washed product for an intended purpose;
(c) optionally, repeating steps (a) and (b) one or more times; and (d) disposing of the washed product by placing the washed product in an aqueous bath under condition such that at least a portion of the product becomes soluble.
37. A method of reducing an amount of radioactive waste generated by at least one contaminated product, wherein said method comprises:

(a) washing the at least one contaminated product in an aqueous bath under washing condition such that the at least one product does not become soluble, producing a washed product;
(b) using the washed product for an intended purpose;
(c) optionally, repeating steps (a) and (b) one or more times; and (d) disposing of the washed product by placing the washed product in an aqueous bath under condition such that at least a portion of the product becomes soluble.
38. A method of removing one or more radioactive contaminants from a product containing water-soluble material, wherein said method comprises:

(a) washing the product in an aqueous bath under washing condition such that the water-soluble material does not become soluble; and (b) drying the washed product.
39. The method of claim 38, wherein said method further comprises:

(c) using the washed product for an intended purpose that exposes the washed product to one or more radioactive contaminants;
(d) optionally, repeating steps (a) to (c) one or more times; and (e) disposing of the washed product by placing the washed product in an aqueous bath under condition such that at least a portion of the product becomes soluble.
40. The method of Claim 38, wherein the washing step is repeated two or more times.
41. The method of Claim 38, wherein the washing step is repeated up to about 20 times.
42. The method of Claim 38, wherein the washing step is repeated up to about 10 times.
43. The method of Claim 38, wherein the aqueous bath has a bath temperature of less than about 90°C during the washing step.
44. The method of Claim 38, wherein the aqueous bath has a bath temperature of less than about 75°C during the washing step.
45. The method of Claim 38, wherein the aqueous bath has a bath temperature of less than about 50°C during the washing step.
46. The method of Claim 38, wherein the aqueous bath has a bath temperature of less than about 37°C during the washing step.
47. The method of Claim 38, wherein the aqueous bath contains one or more surfactants, detergents, or other cleaning agents.
48. The method of Claim 38, wherein the product is a fiber, a fabric, a film, or a combination thereof.
49. The method of Claim 38, wherein the product is a non-woven fabric.
50. The method of Claim 38, wherein the product is a woven fabric.
51. The method of Claim 38, wherein the product is a knitted fabric.
52. The method of Claim 38, wherein the product comprises a garment, protective clothing, coveralls, booties, a face mash, gloves, apparel, linen, a drape, a towel, a fabric, a film, a laminate containing at least one fabric or film, a sponge, a mop head, a web, a bag, a gauze, a pad, a wipe, a pillow, or a bandage.
53. The method of Claim 38, wherein the product comprises coveralls.
54. The method of Claim 38, wherein the water-soluble material comprises polyvinyl alcohol; polyacrylic acid; polymethacrylic acid;
polyacrylamide;
water-soluble cellulose derivatives comprising methyl celluloses, ethyl celluloses, hydroxymethyl celluloses, hydroxypropyl methyl celluloses, and carboxymethyl celluloses; carboxymethylchitin; polyvinyl pyrrolidone; ester gum; water-soluble derivatives of starch comprising hydroxypropyl starch and carboxymethyl starch;
water-soluble polyethylene oxides; alkali water-soluble materials comprising ethylene copolymers of acrylic acid (EAA) and methacrylic acid (EMAA), and salts thereof; and ionomers containing acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid.
55. The method of Claim 53, wherein the water-soluble material comprises polyvinyl alcohol with or without acetyl groups, cross-linked or uncross-linked.
56. The method of claim 38, further comprising one or more steps comprising:

(i) agitating the product or aqueous bath during the washing step;
(ii) extracting water from the product;
(iii) monitoring the dried product for one or more radioactive contaminants;
(iv) marking the washed product to identify the number of wash cycles that the product has experienced;
(v) using the washed product for a particular purpose, wherein the particular purpose exposes the washed product to one or more radioactive contaminants; and (vi) repeating any of the above steps.
57. A method of removing one or more radioactive contaminants from a coverall containing water-soluble material, wherein said method comprises:

(a) washing the coverall in an aqueous bath under washing condition such that the water-soluble material does not become soluble; and (b) drying the washed coverall.
58. The method of claim 57, wherein said method further comprises:

(c) using the washed coverall for an intended purpose that exposes the washed coverall to one or more radioactive contaminants;
(d) optionally, repeating steps (a) to (c) one or more times; and (e) disposing of the washed coverall by placing the washed coverall in an aqueous bath under condition such that at least a portion of the coverall becomes soluble.
59. The method of claim 57, wherein the coverall comprises (a) two or more fabric sheets joined to one another with (b) one or more sheet fastening devices comprising thread, adhesive, hoop and loop material, or a combination thereof, and (c) a closure system comprising one or more zippers, drawstrings, snaps, buttons, adhesives, hoop and loop materials, or a combination thereof; wherein (a) the two or more fabric sheets, (b) the one or more sheet fastening devices, and (c) the closure system each independently comprise water-soluble material, water-dispersible material, or a combination thereof.
60. Scrubs comprising water-soluble materials.
61. The scrubs of Claim 60, wherein the scrubs are single-use scrubs.
62. The scrubs of Claim 60, wherein the scrubs comprise (i) a smock-like, shirt having a V-neck, sleeves, and up to about six pockets, and (ii) a pair of pants having pant legs, and up to about four pockets.
63. The scrubs of Claim 62, wherein the scrubs comprise shout sleeves and long pant legs.
64. The scrubs of Claim 60, wherein the scrubs comprise at least 50 parts by weight (pbw) of water-soluble materials, based on a total weight of the scrubs.
65. The scrubs of Claim 60, wherein the scrubs consist essentially of water-soluble materials and at least one colorant to provide a desired color.
66. The scrubs of Claim 65, wherein the desired color is blue or green.
