Abstract
A low profile orthopedic device is used to fix and stabilize bones to correct anomalies in skeletal structure occurring naturally or by trauma. Bone screws are screwed into bones by application of torque. Clamp are movably attached to the screws. Each clamp includes a compression ring. A connecting rod connects several screws through slots in the clamps. The clamps are tightened to hold the rod and the heads in a pre-selected position by linear movement of the compression rings.
Claims (20)
1. An orthopedic device for stabilizing bones comprising a bone pin having a shank for penetrating a bone with a head on one end and a clamp for locking said pin to an elongated connector, said clamp having a body including exterior walls forming an inner receptacle adapted to enclose said head, a compression ring surrounding the outside of said exterior walls in one position, a slot through said exterior walls of said body opposite said receptacle, said slot adapted to slidably contact said connector, said compression ring linearly movable along said outside of said exterior walls to a second position whereby said exterior walls of said receptacle and said slot exert compressive force adapted to securely lock said clamp about the head and the connector.
2. An orthopedic device of claim 1 wherein said connector is shaped as an elongated rods said rod adapted to be connected with a plurality of links and bone pins along the. length thereof said connector and said plurality of bone pins adapted to stabilize bones in a fixed position.
3. An orthopedic device of claim 1 wherein said clamp includes a link adapted to slidably contact said slot at one end, a journal at said other end of said link, said journal having a clamp for securing said connector therein whereby said connector can be displaced from said pin.

An orthopedic device of claim 3 wherein said link has a split sleeve and a compression ring about said split sleeve, said compression ring movable along said split sleeve from an open position to a closed position, said open position permitting adjustment of said connector in said clamp and said closed position securing said connector and journal together.
5. An orthopedic device of claim 1 wherein said head of said bone pin is approximately spherical and said receptacle has a complementary shape whereby said bone pin and said clamp may be universally oriented.
6. An orthopedic device of claim 5 wherein said connector is shaped as an elongated rods said rod adapted to be connected with a plurality of clamps and bone pins along the length thereof said connector and said plurality of bone pins adapted to stabilize bones in a fixed position.
7. An orthopedic device of claim 5 wherein said clamp includes a link adapted to slidably contact said slot at one end, a journal at said other end of said link, said journal including means for securing said connector therein whereby said connector can be displaced from said pin.
8. An orthopedic device of claim 7 wherein said journal has a split sleeve surrounding said link, a compression ring about said split sleeve, said compression ring movable along said split sleeve from an open position to a closed position; said open position :permitting adjustment of said connector in said journal and said closed position securing said connector and journal together.
9. An orthopedic device of claim 1 wherein said shank is formed with an exterior helical thread.
10. An orthopedic device of claim 1 wherein said slot is adjacent said receptacle whereby said head and said connector are in close proximity producing a low profile
11. An orthopedic device of claim 10 wherein said exterior walls extend beyond said slot and are shaped to cooperate with a retainer means spanning said slot, said retainer means adapted to close said slot above said connector.
12. In an orthopedic system for stabilizing and fixing bones across a discontinuity, a bone screw comprising a threaded shank with a head, said head including a means for applying torque to said shank, and a clamp, said clamp having an elongated body with exterior walls, a receptacle at one end of said clamp formed by said exterior walls,a slot extending across said exterior walls at the other end of said clamp, said head movably disposed in said receptacle, a compression ring surrounding said exterior walls in one position adapted to move linearly along said exterior walls to a second position whereby said bone screw is screwed into bone by application of torque to said head and said exterior walls exert a compressive force in said receptacle and said slot when said compression ring is moved linearly to said second position.
13. In an orthopedic system of claim 12 wherein said head is approximately spherical and said receptacle is of complementary shape.
14. In an orthopedic system of claim 13 wherein a connector rod is slidably engaged in said slot when said compression ring is in said one position, said connector rod of a length adapted to span said discontinuity, said rod is held in said slot when said compression ring is in said second position.
15. A method of using an orthopedic device to stabilize bones comprising the steps of (a) providing a plurality of bone pins having a shank for penetrating a bone with a head on one end and a clamp for connecting said head to an elongated connector, said clamp including exterior walls forming an inner receptacle adapted to enclose said head, a compression ring surrounding the outside of said exterior walls in one position, a slot through said exterior walls of said clamp opposite said receptacle, said slot sized to slidably contact said connector, said compression ring linearly movable along said outside of said exterior walls to a second position whereby said clamp is securely fastened to said head and said connector, (b) inserting one of said plurality of said bone pins in a bone, (c) inserting a second of said plurality of said bone pins in another bone, (d) assembling said first bone pin head with said receptacle of said first clamp, (e) assembling said second bone pin head with said receptacle of said second clamp, (f) connecting said first slot and second slot of said first and second clamps with a connector, (g) adjusting said connector and said clamps to hold the bones in a preselected spatial relationship, and (h) moving said first and second compression ring to said second position on said first and second clamp, respectively, to secure said connector and said first and said second clamps to fix and stabilize said bones.
16. A method of claim 15 comprising the steps of (a) pre-assembly of said clamp and said head, and (b) inserting a tool through each of said clamps to contact said head and insert each of said pins in said bone.
17. A method of claim 16 comprising the steps of (a) providing at least one link having one end for contacting a slot and a journal on the other end, (b) adjustably contacting at least one said slot with said one end of said link, (c) adjustably fitting said connector in said journal, and (d) moving at least one compression ring to said second position to secure said link and said connector.
18. A method of claim 17 comprising the steps of (a) providing said pins with an external helical thread, (b) applying torque to said threaded pins to screw said pins in said bones, (c) moving said compression ring linearly by application of equal and opposite forces.
19. A low profile orthopedic system for stabilizing and fixing bones across a discontinuity having a connector spanning the discontinuity and anchored on both sides of the discontinuity comprising a plurality of bone screws for anchoring the connector, each said screws having a threaded shank and a head, said head including means to apply torque to said screw to anchor each of said screws in bone, a plurality of clamps, each said clamps having exterior walls forming a clamp body, a receptacle in one end of said clamp body, said head of each of said plurality of screws secured in said receptacle of each of said plurality of clamps, a slot in the other end of said body, a connector rod seated in said slot of said plurality of clamps, a plurality of compression rings slidably mounted on each of said clamps and movable from an open position to a closed position, said compression rings in said closed position securely fastening said connector rod to said plurality of said bone screws.
20. A low profile orthopedic system of claim 19 wherein a retainer is connected to said other end of said exterior walls of each of said clamps closing said slot.
