Abstract
A method and apparatus for injection molding an article (10) including a radially extending child resistant feature (22). Finish block halves (216,218) are provided that include a pocket (246) and that are closable together to form a neck-finish mold cavity. Mold body halves (220,222) are provided that include a core portion (249) and that are closable together to form a body mold cavity. The core portion (249) is advanceable toward the pocket (246) to cooperate therewith to define a cavity for forming the child resistant feature (22). The core portion (249 may be integrally formed into one or more of the mold body halves (220,222), or may be separately mounted and relatively movable with respect thereto.
Claims (6)
1.
Apparatus for injection molding a plastic preform (110) for subsequent blow molding into a container (10) having a neck finish (14) and a closure release element (22) cantilevered radially outwardly from said neck finish, said apparatus comprising:
a pair of preform finish blocks (216, 218 or 310) that, when brought together, form a mold cavity for said neck finish and having an axis, and a pair of preform mold bodies (220, 222 or 312) that, when brought together, form a mold cavity for the preform body, where in one of said pair of preform finish blocks (218 or 310) has an axially opening pocket (246 or 318, 320) for forming a portion of said closure release element; and one of said pair of preform mold bodies (222 or 312) includes a core portion (244 or 334) that is movable in the direction of said axis into said pocket to form with said pocket a mold cavity for injection molding said closure release element.
Apparatus for injection molding a plastic preform (110) for subsequent blow molding into a container (10) having a neck finish (14) and a closure release element (22) cantilevered radially outwardly from said neck finish, said apparatus comprising:
a pair of preform finish blocks (216, 218 or 310) that, when brought together, form a mold cavity for said neck finish and having an axis, and a pair of preform mold bodies (220, 222 or 312) that, when brought together, form a mold cavity for the preform body, where in one of said pair of preform finish blocks (218 or 310) has an axially opening pocket (246 or 318, 320) for forming a portion of said closure release element; and one of said pair of preform mold bodies (222 or 312) includes a core portion (244 or 334) that is movable in the direction of said axis into said pocket to form with said pocket a mold cavity for injection molding said closure release element.

The apparatus set forth in claim 1 wherein said one finish block (218 or 310) has a surface facing axially toward said one mold body (222 or 312), said pocket opening at said surface toward said one mold body.

The apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein said core portion (244) is disposed in fixed position on said one of said pair of preform mold bodies (222), said one of said pair of preform mold bodies being movable in the direction of said axis toward said one of said pair of preform finish blocks (218) to move said core portion axially into said pocket (246) to form said mold cavity for said closure release element, whereby said one of said pair of preform mold bodies is retractable to move said core portion out of said pocket.
The apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein said core portion (244) is disposed in fixed position on said one of said pair of preform mold bodies (222), said one of said pair of preform mold bodies being movable in the direction of said axis toward said one of said pair of preform finish blocks (218) to move said core portion axially into said pocket (246) to form said mold cavity for said closure release element, whereby said one of said pair of preform mold bodies is retractable to move said core portion out of said pocket.

The apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein said core portion (334) is movably mounted on said one of said pair of preform mold bodies (312) for movement in the direction of said axis into said pocket (318, 320) to form said mold cavity for said closure release element, whereby said core portion is retractable out of said pocket.
The apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein said core portion (334) is movably mounted on said one of said pair of preform mold bodies (312) for movement in the direction of said axis into said pocket (318, 320) to form said mold cavity for said closure release element, whereby said core portion is retractable out of said pocket.

The apparatus set forth in claim 4 wherein core portion (334) is coupled to an actuator (318) carried by said one preform mold body.
