Abstract

Wire guide devices, and methods (300) of using same, having an elongate shaft (10, 110) with a first end portion (14, 114) and a flexible second end portion (16,116) having a non-coiled portion (24, 124) comprising a nominal outer circumference (22, 122) disposed about a longitudinal axis (18, 118) and having a first outer surface (12, 112) including the nominal outer circumference( 22, 122) and defining a first surface area (30, 130). Textures such as protuberances (26), indentations (28), peaks (160), and/or valleys (161) are disposed substantially circumferentially about the nominal outer circumference (22, 122) and defining an effective perimeter (21, 121) greater than the nominal outer circumference (22, 122) and having a second outer surface (20, 120) defining a second surface area (40, 140) greater than the first surface area (30, 130). Hydrophilic materials and therapeutic agents may be disposed partially on the second end portion (24, 124) and a coating (54, 74), and a membrane 84 may be disposed about non-coiled portion (24, 124) and coating (54, 74) to form reservoirs (73) or lumens (76) for delivering hydrophilic materials and delivering therapeutic agents.

Claims (32)

1. ~A wire guide device comprising:
an elongate shaft 10, 110 having a longitudinal axis 18, 118, a first end portion 14, 114, and. a flexible second end portion 16, 116, the second end portion 16, 116 comprising a non-coiled portion 24, 124 having a nominal outer circumference 22, 122 disposed substantially uniformly about the longitudinal axis 18, 118; and a plurality of textures 26, 28, 160, 161 disposed substantially circumferentially about the nominal outer circumference 22, 122 of the non-coiled portion 24, 124, the non-coiled portion 24, 124 with the plurality of textures 26, 28, 160, 161 having an effective perimeter 21, 121 about the longitudinal axis 18, 118 that is greater than the nominal outer circumference 22, 122.
2. ~The device of claim 1 wherein at least one texture 26, 28, 160, 161 thrusts radially outward from about 0.001 inches to about 0.020 inches relative to the nominal outer circumference 22, 122.
3. ~The device of claim 1 wherein at least one texture 26, 28, 160, 161 thrusts radially inward from about 0.001 inches to about 0.020 inches relative to the nominal outer circumference 22, 122.
4. ~The device of claim I wherein the non-coiled portion 24, 124 is at least about 5.0 cm in length.
5. ~The device of claim 1 wherein the textures 26, 28, 160, 161 are disposed about 10% to about 90% of the non-coiled portion 24, 124.
6. ~The device of claim 1 wherein at least one textures comprises a protuberance 26.
7. ~The device of claim 1 wherein at least one textures comprises an indentation 28.
8. ~The device of claims 6 or 7 further comprising a coating 54 disposed about the textures 26, 28, the coating 54 comprising hydrophilic material.
9. ~The device of claims 6 or 7 further comprising a coating 54 disposed about the textures 26, 28, the coating 54 comprising therapeutic agent.
10. ~The device of claim I wherein textures comprise peaks 160 and valleys 161, wherein adjacent peaks 160 define, the valley 161 therebetween.
11. ~The device of claim 10 wherein adjacent peaks 160 defining the valley 161 form a shape selected from the group consisting of channeled, corrugated, creased, crescent, curvilinear, D-shaped, finned, folded, furrow, gilled, grooved, indented, pleated, rails, recessed, ribbed, thread, ridged, slitted, slotted, U-shaped, V-shaped, tracks, twisted, waves, helical winding, spiral winding, and any combinations thereof.
12. ~The device of claim 10 further comprising a hydrophilic agent deposited in at least one valley 161.
13. ~The device of claim 10 further comprising'a therapeutic agent deposited in at least one valley 161.
14. ~The device of claim 10 further comprising a membrane 84 disposed at least partially about adjacent peaks 160 forming a reservoir 73 in the valley 161 therebetween containing therapeutic agent 90, and the membrane 84 being permeable to the therapeutic agent 90 at a desired time release.
15. ~The device of claim 10 further comprising a membrane 84 partially shrink wrapped about adjacent peaks 160 such that at least one lumen 76 is formed in the valley 161 therebetween, the lumen 76 having a distal port 77 extending to a space exterior to the elongate wire guide second end 116.
16. ~The device of claim 10 further comprising a coating 74 disposed at least partially about the peaks 160 and valleys 161, wherein the coating 74 comprises a hydrophilic material.
17. ~The device of claim 10 further comprising a coating 74 disposed at least partially about the peaks 160 and valleys 161, wherein the coating comprises a therapeutic agent.
18. ~The device of claims 16 or 17 further comprising a membrane 84 disposed about the coating 74 and being permeable to the coating 74 at a desired time release.
19. ~The device of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of textures 26, 28, 160, 161 further comprises a therapeutic agent.
20. ~The device of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of textures 26, 28, 160, 161 further comprises hydrophilic material.
21. ~The device of claim 1 wherein the non-coiled portion 24, 124 has a first outer surface 12, 112 that includes the nominal outer circumference 22, Is122 and comprises a first surface area 30, 130.
22. ~The device of claim 21 wherein the non-coiled portion 24, 124 has a second outer surface 20, 120 that includes the effective perimeter 21, 121 and comprises a second surface area 40, 140, wherein the second surface area 40, is greater than the first surface area 30, 130.
23. ~The device of claim 22 wherein the textures 26, 28, 160, 161 form a ringed pattern on the second outer surface 20, 120.
24. ~The device of claim 22 wherein the textures 26, 28, 160, 161 form a random pattern on the second outer surface 20, 120.
25. ~The device of claim 1 wherein said device is a wire guide 10, 110.
26. ~The device of claim 1 wherein the non-coiled portion 24, 124 has a cross section 1A-1A, 2A-2A, 2B-2B, 6-6, 7-7, 8-8 comprising the nominal outer circumference 22, 122, the nominal outer circumference defined by a substantially uniform radius 19, 119 as measured from the longitudinal axis 18, 118; and the plurality of textures 26, 28, 160, 161 disposed substantially circumferentially about the nominal outer circumference at the cross section 1A, 2A-2A, 2B-2B, 6-6, 7-7, 8-8 of the non-coiled portion 22, 122 define an effective perimeter 21, 121 having a variable radius 19', 119' as measured from the longitudinal axis 18, 118, wherein the effective perimeter 21, 121 is greater than the nominal outer circumference 22, 122.
27. ~The device of claim 1 wherein the non-coiled portion 24, 124 has a non-circular cross section and an undulating circumferential outer surface 20, 120;
and the undulating circumferential outer surface 20, 120 comprises the plurality of textures 26, 28, 160, 161 disposed substantially circumferentially about the nominal outer circumference 22, 122 of the non-coiled portion 24, 124.
28. ~A method 300 of using the wire guide device of claim 1, comprising the steps of providing 301 an elongate wire guide 10, 110 according to any one of claims 1-31;
providing 302 a tubular member having a first end and a second end, a first end opening and a second end opening defining a lumen;
placing 303 the tubular member second end into a patient; and advancing 304 the wire guide second end through the tubular member first end opening, lumen, and second end opening.
29. ~The method 300 of claim 28 further comprising the step of placing 305 hydrophilic material at least partially on the wire guide second outer surface 20, 120.
30. The method 300 of claim 28 further comprising the step of placing 306 therapeutic agent at least partially on the wire guide second outer surface 20, 120.
31. The method 300 of claim 28 further comprising the step of positioning 307 the wire guide flexible second end 16, 116 to a designated site within a vessel.
32. The method 300 of claim 28 wherein the tubular member comprises an endoscope wherein the second end is a flexible distal insertion portion with a distal light and lens for visualizing the interior of an internal region of a body and the lumen is a working channel for passing said wire guide.
