Abstract

An electronic paper cutting machine includes a housing to which a drive roller is coupled for moving a sheet to be cut in a first direction and a cutter assembly coupled to the housing and moveable in a second direction that is perpendicular to the first direction. A user interface is incorporated into the housing for allowing a user to select via the user interface at least one shape to be cut by the cutter assembly wherein controlled movement of the drive roller and the cutter assembly causes a shape to be cut in the sheet.

Claims (37)

1. A paper cutting apparatus, comprising:
a housing;
a cutting mechanism coupled to said housing and configured for cutting a sheet of paper; and a first door pivotally coupled to said housing pivotable between an open position and a closed position, said first door having a substantially planar inner surface, said inner surface providing a sheet support surface when said first door is in said open position;
whereby said first door exposes at least a portion of said cutting mechanism when in said open position.
2. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a power button for turning on and off the power, said power button coupled to a release mechanism for releasing said first door from the closed position when said power button is depressed.
3. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 2, further including a biasing mechanism coupled to said first door for biasing said first door in said open position.
4. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 1, further including a second door pivotally coupled to said housing pivotable between an open position and a closed position.
5. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 4, further comprising a power button for turning on and off the power, said power button coupled to a release mechanism for releasing said second door from the closed position when said power button is depressed, said second door biased into an open position.
6. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 5, further comprising a user display coupled to an inside of said second door.
7. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a user interface incorporated into said housing for allowing a user to select through said user interface at least one shape to be cut by said cutting mechanism, a processor housed within said housing for controlling movement of said cutting mechanism and for receiving commands through said user interface; and a memory device in communication with said processor, said memory device containing a set of shapes to be cut with said cutting mechanism for selecting by a user through said user interface.

The paper cutting apparatus of claim 1, wherein said cutting mechanism comprises a drive roller for moving a sheet to be cut in a first direction and a cutting assembly positioned relative to said drive roller moveable in a second direction substantially perpendicular to said first direction, whereby combined controlled movement of said drive roller and said cutting assembly causes a shape to be cut in the sheet.
9. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 7, wherein said memory device comprises a removable cartridge containing data comprising at least one algorithm representing at least one character stored thereon.
10. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 9, further comprising a socket coupled to said housing for receiving said cartridge to allow communication between said cartridge and said processor.
11. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 7, wherein said user interface comprises a keyboard and further including a removable keyboard overlay, said overlay including a set of characters that match a set of characters of said cartridge.
12. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 7, wherein said user interface allows a user to select a size of the shape to be cut.
13. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 12, wherein said size of the shape to be cut includes more than three sizes.
14. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 7, wherein said user interface comprises at least one device for allowing a user to select at least one of the speed and pressure of the cutting mechanism.
15. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 1, further comprising at least one handle incorporated into said housing for carrying said housing.
16. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 15, wherein said at least one handle comprises at least one recess formed in said housing.
17. The paper cutting apparatus us of claim 15, wherein said housing defines at least one recess for receiving at least a portion of said at least one handle therein, said at least one handle movable relative to said housing when grasped by a user to allow the user to carry said housing.
18. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 17, wherein said at least one handle is pivotally coupled to said housing.
19. A paper cutting apparatus, comprising:
a housing;
a cutting mechanism coupled to said housing and configured for cutting a sheet of paper; and a substantially planar cutting support extending from proximate said cutting mechanism to outside said housing, said cutting support configured for supporting the sheet of paper as the sheet of paper is being cut by the cutting mechanism.
20. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 19, wherein said cutting support comprises a first door pivotally coupled to said housing pivotable between an open position and a closed position, said first door defining said substantially planar cutting support when said first door is in said open position.
21. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 20, further comprising a power button for turning on and off the power, said power button coupled to a release mechanism for releasing said first door from the closed position when said power button is depressed.
22. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 21, further including a biasing mechanism coupled to said first door for biasing said first door in said open position.
23. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 20, further including a second door pivotally coupled to said housing pivotable between an open position and a closed position.
24. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 23, further comprising a power button for turning on and off the power, said power button coupled to a release mechanism for releasing said second door from the closed position when said power button is depressed, said second door biased into an open position.
25. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 24, further comprising a user display coupled to an inside of said second door.
26. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 19, further comprising a user interface incorporated into said housing for allowing a user to select through said user interface at least one shape to be cut by said cutting mechanism, a processor housed within said housing for controlling movement of said cutting mechanism and for receiving commands through said user interface; and a memory device in communication with said processor, said memory device containing a set of shapes to be cut with said cutting mechanism for selecting by a user through said user interface.
27. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 19, wherein said cutting mechanism comprises a drive roller for moving a sheet to be cut in a first direction and a cutting assembly positioned relative to said drive roller moveable in a second direction substantially perpendicular to said first direction, whereby combined controlled movement of said drive roller and said cutting assembly causes a shape to be cut in the sheet.
28. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 26, wherein said memory device comprises a removable cartridge containing data comprising at least one algorithm representing at least one character stored thereon.
29. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 28, further comprising a socket coupled to said housing for receiving said cartridge to allow communication between said cartridge and said processor.
30. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 26, wherein said user interface comprises a keyboard and further including a removable keyboard overlay, said overlay including a set of characters that match a set of characters of said cartridge.
31. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 26, wherein said user interface allows a user to select a size of the shape to be cut.
32. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 31, wherein said size of the shape to be cut includes more than three sizes.
33. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 26, wherein said user interface comprises at least one device for allowing a user to select at least one of the speed and pressure of the cutting mechanism.
34. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 19, further comprising at least one handle incorporated into said housing for carrying said housing.
35. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 34, wherein said at least one handle comprises at least one recess formed in said housing.
36. The paper cutting apparatus us of claim 34, wherein said housing defines at least one recess for receiving at least a portion of said at least one handle therein, said at least one handle movable, relative to said housing when grasped by a user to allow the user to carry said housing.
37. The paper cutting apparatus of claim 36, wherein said at least one handle is pivotally coupled to said housing.
