Abstract

A mask for delivery of oxygen to a patient, includes a body having a rim to sit comfortably on a patient's face, a central portion, and webs extending between the central portion and the peripheral portion and integral therewith. The webs define open areas that make up at least 30% of the mask body. The central portion includes a gas diffuser shaped to direct a turbulent gas plume over the patient's nose and mouth. The dimensions of the diffuser permit formation of a suitable gas plume over a range of oxygen delivery rates.

Claims (24)

A facial mask for delivery of a gas to the nose and mouth region of a patient, comprising an at least partially rigid mask body having a rim for contacting the patient's face substantially covering the nose and mouth of the patient, means to engage the mask to a patient so as to maintain contact between the user's face and said rim, a central portion, a connection to a supply of gas, a generally central gas nozzle opening into the interior of said mask at said central portion operatively connected to said gas connection, a diffuser at least partly surrounding said nozzle and fastened to and supported by said mask body at a position spaced apart from and not contacting the user's face, said diffuser including a tubular wall structure extending from said central portion towards said patient's face, and a gas flow disrupter between said nozzle and said user's face so as to generate a turbulent plume of said gas substantially at a non-oblique angle towards the user's nose and mouth, said mask body further comprising an array of elongate webs between said rim and said central portion, said webs defining a plurality of openings therebetween within said body to permit access to the user's face from the outside of said mask, said openings comprising at least 30% of the surface area of said mask.
2. A mask according to claim 1 in combination with an oxygen delivery tube releasably securable to the outer surface of the central portion of the mask so as to communicate with the gas connection.
3. A mask as defined in claim 1 wherein said gas flow disrupter comprises a baffle having a stem mounted adjacent to said nozzle and a head having a curved surface facing said nozzle for generating turbulence within said gas flow.
4. A mask as defined in claim 3 wherein said head includes a curled back conical lip facing said nozzle.
5. A mask as defined in claim 3 wherein said stem includes a passageway open to the interior of said mask body and communicating with the exterior of said mask for permitting measurement of exhaled gas from within said mask body.
6. A mask according to claim 1 wherein said tubular wall structure is generally cup-shaped, the wall thereof ending in a free edge contoured so as to conform, when the mask is in position on a patient, generally to the shape of a patient's nose and mouth area but spaced apart therefrom when in use.
7. A mask as defined in claim 1 wherein said tubular structure has a maximum top to bottom distance when said mask is vertical of 40 mm above and below said nozzle and a maximum side to side distance of 20 mm on either side of said nozzle, when said mask is positioned in an upright position.
8. A mask as defined in claim 1, wherein said diffuser is positioned so as to maintain a spacing of between 12 and 40 mm between said diffuser and said user's face as measured from the skin surface between nose and mouth.
9. A mask as defined in claim 1, wherein said openings comprise between 50 and 75 per cent of the total surface area of said body.
10. A mask as defined in claim 1, wherein said diffuser is positioned so as to be centered over a point about halfway between the user's nose and upper lip.
11. A mask as defined in claim 1, wherein at least one of said openings provides access from the mask exterior to the user's nostrils.
12. A facial mask for delivery of a gas to the nose and mouth region of a patient, comprising an at least partially rigid mask body having a rim for contacting the patient's face substantially covering the nose and mouth of the patient, said mask body having a generally open structure having a plurality of openings permitting communication between the interior and exterior of said mask, fastening means to engage the mask to a patient so as to maintain contact between the user's face and said rim, a connection to a supply of gas, a gas nozzle opening into the interior of said mask operatively connected to said gas connection, a diffuser at least partly surrounding said nozzle and fastened to and supported by said mask body at a position spaced apart from and not contacting the user's face, said diffuser being positioned generally centrally within said mask and including a gas outlet nozzle, a gas flow disrupter between said nozzle and said user's face so as to generate a turbulent plume of said gas substantially at a non-oblique angle towards the user's nose and mouth and a peripheral flange surrounding said nozzle, said diffuser being positioned within said mask so as to fit entirely within a space defined in relation to a point on the user's face about halfway between the base of the nose and uppermost edge of upper lip, said space defined in the vertical plane as 40 mm above and below said point, 20 mm on either side of said point and horizontally spaced apart from said point by between 12 and 40 mm when said user is upright.
13. A mask as defined in claim 12, wherein said openings comprise between 30 and 80 per cent of the total surface area of said body, said surface area comprising open and covered areas.
14. A mask as defined in claim 13, wherein said openings comprise between 60 and 75 per cent of the total surface area of said body.
