Abstract
An ink jet type printing apparatus in which an ink supply needle is located near one side in a direction perpendicular to the reciprocated directions of a carriage, a circuit board is mounted on a wall of an ink cartridge in the vicinity of the side on which an ink supply port is formed and plural contacts for connecting to external control means are formed on the exposed surface of the circuit board.
Claims (138)
1. An ink cartridge for detachably mounting on a printing apparatus and supplying ink to a print head to which ink is supplied via an ink supply needle, wherein:
an ink supply port into which said ink supply needle is inserted is formed on a bottom face of the ink cartridge;
plural electrodes for connecting to contact forming members of the printing apparatus are formed on a side face of the ink cartridge;
said plural electrodes includes a detection electrode for detecting whether the ink cartridge is installed or not by forming conduction between two contact forming members of the printing apparatus;
at least one of said plural electrodes is disposed on a central line of said ink supply port, when viewing, in a perpendicular direction, said side face on which said plural electrodes are formed; and said plural electrodes are located in the vicinity of said bottom face of the ink cartridge.
an ink supply port into which said ink supply needle is inserted is formed on a bottom face of the ink cartridge;
plural electrodes for connecting to contact forming members of the printing apparatus are formed on a side face of the ink cartridge;
said plural electrodes includes a detection electrode for detecting whether the ink cartridge is installed or not by forming conduction between two contact forming members of the printing apparatus;
at least one of said plural electrodes is disposed on a central line of said ink supply port, when viewing, in a perpendicular direction, said side face on which said plural electrodes are formed; and said plural electrodes are located in the vicinity of said bottom face of the ink cartridge.
2. The ink cartridge according to claim 1, further comprising a circuit board on which said plural electrodes are formed, said circuit board being provided on said side face of said ink cartridge.
3. The ink cartridge according to any one of claim 2, wherein said plural electrodes are arranged on a surface of said circuit board opposing said contact forming members and a semiconductor storage means is located on a rear surface of said circuit board.
4. An ink cartridge according to claim 3, wherein said semiconductor storage means is molded by ink-resistant material.
5. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 2 to 4, wherein said plural electrodes are located distant from an edge of said circuit board.
6. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 2 to 5, wherein said circuit board is detachably mountable on the ink cartridge.
7. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 2 to 6, wherein said circuit board is located in a centre of a widthwise direction of the side face of the ink cartridge.
8. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein said ink supply port is positioned nearer to said side face than to another side face opposing said side face.
9. The ink cartridge according to claim 8, wherein said side face is adjacent to said ink supply port.
10. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 1 to 9, further comprising a top face opposed to said bottom face, wherein said side face is located on a position which is nearer to said bottom face than to said top face.
11. The ink cartridge according to claim 10, wherein said detection electrode is located on a position which is nearer to said bottom face than to said top face.
12. The ink cartridge according to claims 1 to 11, wherein a width of said detection electrode is longer than those of other electrodes.
13. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein an electrode which is positioned on the central line of said ink supply port is said detection electrode.
14. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein said detection electrode is grounded when the ink cartridge is mounted on the printing apparatus.
15. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 1 to 14, wherein said plural electrodes are divided into a first group and a second group.
16. The ink cartridge according to claim 15, wherein the electrodes of the first group and the electrodes of the second group are arranged at an interval in an insertion direction of the ink cartridge to the printing apparatus.
17. The ink cartridge according to claims 15 or 16, wherein said detection electrode is included in said second group and said second group is located closer to said bottom face than said first group.
18. The ink cartridge according to any of claims 1 to 14, wherein said plural electrodes include electrical contact portions for electrically connecting to the contact members of the ink jet printing apparatus, the electrical contact portions are divided into at least a first group and a second group.
19. The ink cartridge according to claim 18, wherein said first group and second group of electrical contact portions are arranged at an interval in an insertion direction of the ink cartridge to the printing apparatus.
20. The ink cartridge according to claims 18 or 19, wherein said detection electrode includes said electrical contact portion in said second group, said second group is located closer to said first face than said first group.
21. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 1 to 20, wherein said detection electrode is substantially located in a centre of a widthwise direction of the ink cartridge.
22. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 1 to 21, wherein said detection electrode is larger than other electrodes.
23. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 1 to 22, wherein said plural electrodes are disposed symmetrically with respect to said central line of said ink supply port.
24. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 1 to 23, wherein some of said plural electrodes are disposed symmetrically with respect to said central line of said ink supply port.
25. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 1 to 24, wherein said electrode is formed in a rectangle in which a side of the electrode parallel to an insertion direction of the ink cartridge is longer than another side of the electrode parallel to another direction.
26. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 1 to 25, wherein some of the electrodes are located at both sides of said detection electrode.
27. The ink cartridge according to any one of claims 1 to 26, further comprising an electrode used for a check in a manufacturing process.
28. An ink supply system mountable on an ink jet printing apparatus having a print head which ejects ink droplets onto a recording medium, an ink supply needle for feeding an ink, and a plurality of elastic electrical contact forming members, the ink supply system comprising:
an ink container for storing the ink, and having an ink supply port configured to receive the ink supply needle and thereby feed the ink to the ink jet printing apparatus;
a semiconductor storage device for storing information about the ink; and a plurality of electrodes each having at least one contact portion for contacting the corresponding elastic electrical contact forming member of the printing apparatus, said contact portions being arranged in a first row including a first number of the contract portions, and a second row including a second number of the contact portions, the first number being smaller than the second number, and the first and the second rows being arranged so that, when the ink supply system is oriented as during mounting to the ink jet printing apparatus, the second row is located at a leading position relative to the first row.

a semiconductor storage device for storing information about the ink; and a plurality of electrodes each having at least one contact portion for contacting the corresponding elastic electrical contact forming member of the printing apparatus, said contact portions being arranged in a first row including a first number of the contract portions, and a second row including a second number of the contact portions, the first number being smaller than the second number, and the first and the second rows being arranged so that, when the ink supply system is oriented as during mounting to the ink jet printing apparatus, the second row is located at a leading position relative to the first row.
29. An ink supply system as in claim 28, wherein at least some of the electrodes are rectangular.
30. An ink supply system as in claim 28, wherein at least one of the electrodes is longer, in a widthwise direction of the rows, than other said electrodes.
31. An ink supply system as in claim 28, wherein at least one of the electrodes is electrically connected to the semiconductor storage device.
32. An ink supply system as in claim 28, further comprising a substrate, wherein the semiconductor storage device and the electrodes are disposed on the substrate.
33. An ink supply system as in claim 32, wherein the substrate is shaped to receive a mounting projection of a surface on which the substrate is mounted.
34. An ink supply system as in claim 32, wherein the substrate is detachably mounted on a surface.
35. An ink supply system as in claim 32, further comprising:
a mounting plate to which the substrate is attached, wherein the mounting plate is attached to the ink container.

36. An ink supply system as in claim 32, wherein the semiconductor storage device is located on a first surface of the substrate, and the electrodes are disposed on a second surface of the substrate.
37. An ink supply system as in claim 32, wherein the substrate is rectangular.
38. An ink supply system as in claim 28, wherein the ink supply port has an axis, wherein the contact portions lie in a first plane, and wherein a second plane perpendicular to the first plane and bisecting each of the rows intersects the axis.
39. An ink supply system as in claim 28, wherein the ink supply port is located at a first wall portion lying in a first plane, and the electrodes are located at a second wall portion lying in a second plane that is orthogonal to the first plane.
40. An ink supply system as in claim 28, wherein the contact portions in the first row are arranged in a staggered manner relative to the contact portions in the second row.
41. An ink supply system as in claim 28, wherein there are only two rows of contact portions.
42. An ink supply system as in claim 28, wherein the semiconductor storage device and electrodes are located at a bottom of the ink container.
43. An ink supply system as in claim 28, wherein the semiconductor storage device and electrodes are located in the vicinity of the ink supply port.
44. An ink supply system as in claim 28, wherein the semiconductor storage device is molded by an ink-resistant material.
45. An ink supply system as in claim 28, wherein the contact portions are arranged to contact the corresponding elastic electrical contact forming members in a predetermined order.
46. An ink supply system as in claim 28, wherein the contact portions of the electrodes are grouped into at least two groups.
47. An ink supply system as in claim 28, wherein the first row is shorter than the second row.
48. A circuit board for use with an ink container that is mountable on an ink jet printing apparatus having a print head which ejects ink droplets onto a recording medium and a plurality of elastic electrical contact forming members, the circuit board comprising:
a substrate;
a semiconductor storage device carried by the substrate;
a plurality of electrodes each having at least one contact portion for contacting the corresponding elastic electrical contact forming member of the printing apparatus, said contact portions being arranged in a first row including a first number of the contact portions, and a second row including a second number of the contract portions, the first number being smaller than the second number, and the first and the second rows being arranged so that, when the circuit board is oriented in a manner in which the contact portions would oppose the respective corresponding elastic electrical contact forming members after movement of the circuit board during mounting to the ink jet printing apparatus, the second row is located at a leading position relative to the first row with respect to such movement.

a plurality of electrodes each having at least one contact portion for contacting the corresponding elastic electrical contact forming member of the printing apparatus, said contact portions being arranged in a first row including a first number of the contact portions, and a second row including a second number of the contract portions, the first number being smaller than the second number, and the first and the second rows being arranged so that, when the circuit board is oriented in a manner in which the contact portions would oppose the respective corresponding elastic electrical contact forming members after movement of the circuit board during mounting to the ink jet printing apparatus, the second row is located at a leading position relative to the first row with respect to such movement.
49. A circuit board as in claim 48, wherein at least some of the electrodes are rectangular.
50. A circuit board as in claim 48, wherein at least one of the electrodes is longer, in a widthwise direction of the rows, than other said electrodes.
51. A circuit board as in claim 48, wherein at least one of the electrodes is electrically connected to the semiconductor storage device.
52. A circuit board as in claim 48, wherein the semiconductor storage device is located on a first surface of the substrate, and the electrodes are disposed on a second surface of the substrate.
53. A circuit board as in claim 48, wherein the substrate is rectangular.
54. A circuit board as in claim 48, wherein the contact portions in the first row are arranged in a staggered manner relative to the contact portions in the second row.
55. A circuit board as in claims 48, wherein the substrate is shaped to receive a mounting projection of a surface on which the substrate is mounted.
56. A circuit board as in claim 48, wherein the substrate is detachably mounted on a surface.
57. A circuit board as in claim 48, further comprising:
a mounting plate to which the substrate is attached.

59. A circuit board as in claim 48, wherein the semiconductor storage device is molded by an ink-resistant material.
60. A circuit board as in claim 48, wherein the contact portions are arranged to contact the corresponding elastic electrical contact forming members in a predetermined order during mounting.
61. A circuit board as in claim 48, wherein the contact portions of the electrodes are grouped into at least two groups.
62. A circuit board as in claim 48, wherein the first row is shorter than the second row.
63. An ink supply system mountable on an ink jet printing apparatus having a print head which ejects ink droplets onto a recording medium, an ink supply needle and a plurality of elastic electrical contact forming members, the ink supply system comprising:
an ink container for storing ink;
an ink supply port for receiving the ink supply needle, the ink supply port having an exit opening and a centerline;
a circuit board having a semiconductor storage device with information about the ink and a plurality of electrodes, each said electrode having at least one contact portion for contacting a corresponding elastic electrical contact forming member of the ink jet printing apparatus so that said contact portions are arranged in a first row and a second row; the second row being closer to the exit opening of the ink supply port than the first row, at least one of said electrodes having a central contact portion located on the centerline of the ink supply port.
an ink container for storing ink;
an ink supply port for receiving the ink supply needle, the ink supply port having an exit opening and a centerline;
a circuit board having a semiconductor storage device with information about the ink and a plurality of electrodes, each said electrode having at least one contact portion for contacting a corresponding elastic electrical contact forming member of the ink jet printing apparatus so that said contact portions are arranged in a first row and a second row; the second row being closer to the exit opening of the ink supply port than the first row, at least one of said electrodes having a central contact portion located on the centerline of the ink supply port.
64. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein at least some of the electrodes are rectangular.
65. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein at least one of the electrodes is longer, in a widthwise direction of the rows, than other said electrodes.
66. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein at least one of the electrodes is electrically connected to the semiconductor storage device.
67. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein the semiconductor storage device is located on a first surface of the circuit board, and the electrodes are disposed on a second surface of the circuit board.
68. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein the circuit board is rectangular.
69. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein the contract portions lie in a first plane, and wherein a second plane perpendicular to the first plane and bisecting each of the rows intersects the centerline of the ink supply port.
70. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein the ink supply port is located at a first wall portion lying in a first plane, and the electrodes are located at a second wall portion lying in a second plane that is orthogonal to the first plane.
71. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein the contact portions in the first row are arranged in a staggered manner relative to the contact portions in the second row.
72. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein the circuit board is shaped to receive a mounting projection of a surface on which the circuit board is mounted.
73. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein the circuit board is detachably mounted on a surface.
74. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein there are only two rows of contact portions.
75. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein the circuit board is located at a bottom of the ink container.
76. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein the circuit board is located in the vicinity of the ink supply port.
77. An ink supply system as in claim 63, further comprising:
a mounting plate to which the circuit board is attached, wherein the mounting plate is attached to the ink container.

78. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein the semiconductor storage device is molded by an ink-resistant material.

80. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein the contact portions of the electrodes are grouped into at least two groups.
81. An ink supply system as in claim 63, wherein the first row is shorter than the second row.
82. An ink supply system mountable on an ink jet printing apparatus having a print head which ejects ink droplets onto a recording medium, an ink supply needle and a plurality of elastic electrical contact forming members, the ink supply system comprising:
an ink container for storing ink;
an ink supply port for receiving the ink supply needle, the ink supply port having an exit opening and a centerline;
a circuit board having a semiconductor storage device with information about the ink and a plurality of electrodes, each said electrode having at least one contact portion for contacting a corresponding elastic electrical contact forming member of the ink jet printing apparatus so that said contact portions are arranged in a first row including a first number of the contact portions and a second row including a second number of the contact portions, the first number being smaller than the second number, and the second row is closer to the exit opening of the ink supply port then the first row.
an ink container for storing ink;
an ink supply port for receiving the ink supply needle, the ink supply port having an exit opening and a centerline;
a circuit board having a semiconductor storage device with information about the ink and a plurality of electrodes, each said electrode having at least one contact portion for contacting a corresponding elastic electrical contact forming member of the ink jet printing apparatus so that said contact portions are arranged in a first row including a first number of the contact portions and a second row including a second number of the contact portions, the first number being smaller than the second number, and the second row is closer to the exit opening of the ink supply port then the first row.

85. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein at least one of the electrodes is electrically connected to the semiconductor storage device.
86. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein the semiconductor storage device is located on a first surface of the circuit board, and the electrodes are disposed on a second surface of the circuit board.
87. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein the circuit board is rectangular.
88. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein the circuit board is shaped to receive a mounting projection of a surface on which the circuit board is mounted.
89. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein the circuit board is detachably mounted on a surface.
90. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein the contact portions lie in a first plane, and wherein a second plane perpendicular to the first plane and bisecting each of the rows intersects the centerline of the ink supply port.
91. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein the ink supply port is located at a first wall portion lying in a first plane, and the electrodes are located at a second wall portion lying in a second plane that is orthogonal to the first plane.
92. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein the contact portions in the first row are arranged in a staggered manner relative to the contact portions in the second row.
93. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein there are only two rows of contact portions.
94. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein the circuit board is located at a bottom of the ink container.
95. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein the circuit board is located at a bottom of the ink container.
96. An ink supply system as in claim 82, further comprising:
a mounting plate to which the circuit board is attached, wherein the mounting plate is attached to the ink container.

97. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein the semiconductor storage device is molded by an ink-resistant material.

99. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein the contact portions of the electrodes are grouped into at least two groups.
100. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein the first row consists of a central contact portion and two end contact portions.
101. An ink supply system as in claim 82, wherein the first row is shorter than the second row.
102. A circuit board for storing information about ink stored within an ink container used in an ink jet printer and providing that information to the ink jet printer, the ink jet printer having a plurality of elastic electrical contact forming members, the circuit board comprising:
a substrate having a surface and an edge;
a semiconductor storage device supported by the substrate;
a plurality of electrodes located on the surface of the substrate, each said electrode having at least one contact portion, the contact portions being arranged in a first row including a first number of the contact portions and a second row including a second number of the contact portions, the first number being smaller than the second number, the first row being substantially parallel to the second row, the edge being located closer to the second row than to the first row, the second row being located between the edge and the first row.

a semiconductor storage device supported by the substrate;
a plurality of electrodes located on the surface of the substrate, each said electrode having at least one contact portion, the contact portions being arranged in a first row including a first number of the contact portions and a second row including a second number of the contact portions, the first number being smaller than the second number, the first row being substantially parallel to the second row, the edge being located closer to the second row than to the first row, the second row being located between the edge and the first row.
103. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein at least some of the electrodes are rectangular.
104. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein at least one of the electrodes is longer, in a widthwise direction, than other said electrodes.
105. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein at least one of the electrodes is electrically connected to the semiconductor storage device.
106. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein the semiconductor storage device is not located on the surface of the substrate on which the electrodes are located.
107. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein the substrate is rectangular.
108. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein the contact portions are respectively contacted by the elastic electrical forming members of the ink jet printer when the ink container having the circuit board is mounted in the ink jet printer.
109. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein the substrate is shaped to receive a mounting projection of a surface on which the substrate is mounted.
110. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein the substrate is detachably mounted on a surface.
111. A circuit board as in claim 102, further comprising:
a mounting plate to which the substrate is attached.
a mounting plate to which the substrate is attached.
112. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein the contact portions in the first row are arranged in a staggered manner relative to the contact portions in the second row.
113. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein there are only two rows of contact portions.
114. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein the semiconductor storage device is molded by an ink-resistant material.
115. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein the contact portions are arranged to contact the corresponding elastic electrical contact forming members in a predetermined order.
116. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein the contact portions of the electrodes are grouped into at least two groups.
117. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein the second row is longer than the first row.
118. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein the second row is separated from the edge by a distance such that, during installation of the circuit board in the ink jet printer, the elastic electrical contact forming members of the ink jet printer first touch the edge and then touch the respective contact portions.

A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein the second row is separate from a position of the substrate such that, during installation of the circuit board in the ink jet printer, the elastic electrical contact forming members of the ink jet printer first touch the position and then touch the respective contact portions.
120. A circuit board as in claim 102, wherein the edge extends in a widthwise direction.
121. A circuit board for storing information about ink stored within an ink container that can be installed in an ink jet printer and providing that information to the ink jet printer, the ink jet printer having a plurality of elastic electrical contact forming members, the circuit board comprising:
a substrate having a surface;
a semiconductor storage device supported by the substrate;
a plurality of electrodes located on the surface of the substrate, each said electrode having at least one contact portion, the contact portions being arranged in a first row including a first number of the contact portions and a second row including a second number of the contact portions, the first number being smaller than the second number, the first row being substantially parallel to the second row, the second row being located closer than the first row to a position of the substrate that, during installation of the circuit board in the ink jet printer, is first to come into abutment with one of the electrical contact forming members.

a semiconductor storage device supported by the substrate;
a plurality of electrodes located on the surface of the substrate, each said electrode having at least one contact portion, the contact portions being arranged in a first row including a first number of the contact portions and a second row including a second number of the contact portions, the first number being smaller than the second number, the first row being substantially parallel to the second row, the second row being located closer than the first row to a position of the substrate that, during installation of the circuit board in the ink jet printer, is first to come into abutment with one of the electrical contact forming members.
122. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein at least some of the electrodes are rectangular.
123. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein at least one of the electrodes is longer, in the widthwise direction, than other said electrodes.
124. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein at least one of the electrodes is electrically connected to the semiconductor storage device.
125. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein the semiconductor storage device is not located on the surface of the substrate on which the electrodes are located.
126. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein the substrate is rectangular.
127. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein the contact portions are respectively contacted by the elastic electrical contact forming members of the ink jet printer when the ink container having the circuit board is mounted in the ink jet printer.
128. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein the substrate is shaped to receive a mounting projection of a surface on which the substrate is mounted.
129. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein the substrate is detachably mounted on a surface.
130. A circuit board as in claim 121, further comprising:
a mounting plate to which the substrate is attached.
a mounting plate to which the substrate is attached.
131. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein the contact portions in the first row are arranged in a staggered manner relative to the contact portions in the second row.
132. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein there are only two rows of contact portions.
133. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein the semiconductor storage device is molded by an ink-resistant material.
134. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein the contact portions are arranged to contact the corresponding elastic electrical contact forming members in a predetermined order during installation.
135. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein the contact portions of the electrodes are grouped into at least two groups.
136. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein the second row is longer than the first row.
137. A circuit board as in claim 121, wherein the second row is separated from the position of the substrate such that, during installation of the circuit board in the ink jet printer, the elastic electrical contact forming members of the ink jet printer first touch the position and then touch the respective contact portions of the second row.
138. A circuit board as in claim 137, wherein the position is at an edge of the substrate.
