Abstract
Processes are provided for recovering precious metals from refractory materials using thiosulfate lixiviants. The processes can employ lixiviants that include at most only small amounts of copper and/or ammonia and operate at a relatively low pH, reduction of polythionates, inert atmospheres to control polythionate production, and electrolytic solutions which provide relatively high rates of precious metal recovery.
Claims (13)
1. A process for recovering gold from a gold-containing material, comprising:
(a) contacting the gold-containing material with a lixiviant to dissolve at least most of the gold and form a pregnant leach solution containing the dissolved gold and polythionates;
(b) contacting the pregnant leach solution with an extraction agent at a temperature of less than about 70°C to collect the gold on the extraction agent convert at least most of the polythionates in the pregnant thiosulfate leach solution into thiosulfate, and form a barren leach solution;
(c) thereafter removing the gold from the extraction agent; and (d) thereafter electrowinning the dissolved gold.
(a) contacting the gold-containing material with a lixiviant to dissolve at least most of the gold and form a pregnant leach solution containing the dissolved gold and polythionates;
(b) contacting the pregnant leach solution with an extraction agent at a temperature of less than about 70°C to collect the gold on the extraction agent convert at least most of the polythionates in the pregnant thiosulfate leach solution into thiosulfate, and form a barren leach solution;
(c) thereafter removing the gold from the extraction agent; and (d) thereafter electrowinning the dissolved gold.
2. The process of Claim 1, wherein the contacting step (a) includes:
(i) contacting the gold-containing material with a first lixiviant at a first pressure to solubilize a first portion of the gold in the gold-containing material; and (ii) contacting the gold-containing material with a second lixiviant at a second pressure greater than the first pressure to solubilize a second portion of the gold in the gold-containing material.
(i) contacting the gold-containing material with a first lixiviant at a first pressure to solubilize a first portion of the gold in the gold-containing material; and (ii) contacting the gold-containing material with a second lixiviant at a second pressure greater than the first pressure to solubilize a second portion of the gold in the gold-containing material.
3. The process of Claim 2, wherein the first and second lixiviants each include thiosulfate.
4. The process of Claim 1, wherein the lixiviant comprises thiosulfate and wherein in the contacting step (a) is at a superatmospheric molecular oxygen partial pressure and the thiosulfate lixiviant has a temperature of from about 40 to about 80°C, and the lixiviant includes at least about 0.005 M thiosulfate and less than 0.05 M of ammonia.
5. The process of Claim 1, wherein the lixiviant comprises thiosulfate and wherein in the contacting step (a) the thiosulfate lixiviant contains at least some copper and at least no more than about 20 ppm of added copper.
6. The process of Claim 1, wherein, in the recovering step (c) the precious metal is electrowon.
7. The process of Claim 1, wherein the pregnant thiosulfate leach solution comprises polythionates and further comprising after step (a) and before step (b):
(c) maintaining the pregnant thiosulfate leach solution at a temperature in the range of from about 60 to about 150°C in the substantial absence or complete absence of molecular oxygen to convert at least most of the polythionate to thiosulfate.

8. The process of Claim 1, further comprising after step (c):
(d) contacting the barren leach solution with a reductant to convert at least most of any polythionates in the barren leach solution into thiosulfate.

9. The process of Claim 1, wherein the pregnant leach solution during step (c) comprises at least about 0.01M sulfite.
10. The process of Claim 1, wherein the concentration of the sulfite during the electrowinning step (d) is in the range of from about 0.1 M to about 2 M.
11. The process of Claim 1, further comprising after step (c):
(d) contacting the barren leach solution with a reductant to convert at least most of any polythionates in the barren leach solution into thiosulfate.

12. The process of Claim 1, wherein contacting step (b) has a temperature that ranges from about 10 to about 50°C.
13. Gold recovered by the process of Claim 1.
