本发明涉及包括指纹读出装置的电子设备。
目前,将指纹传感用于用户识别或验证的目的令人很感兴趣。为此,通过指纹读出装置获得个人的指纹、处理所述指纹读出装置的输出并与所存储的一个或多个指纹的特征数据相比较来确定是否存在匹配项。最普遍类型的指纹读出装置采用光学成像技术,其中,来自光源的光被引向玻璃棱镜的一个面,从第二面反射,并从第三面传出,在这里,光被一种具有相关光学部件的、诸如CCD之类的电子摄像机所探测到。指头放在第二面,在指纹的隆起线接触玻璃面之处不发生反射。通过这种效果,摄像机可以探测到指纹的光学图像。
最近,也提出了其它类型的指纹读出装置,它们依靠不同的读出指纹图案的技术,例如采用热传感、压力传感、电容传感和趋肤电阻传感等替代方法。在这些装置中,传感元件阵列形成个人指头直接放置其上的传感区域,便得不需要光学系统,这样就产生了更紧凑的装置。
目前,为了安全的缘故在广泛的产品中结合指纹读出装置令人很感兴趣。例如,互联网(internet)的成长以及在进行互联网商务交易时的安全需要导致将指纹读出装置植入台式和便携式电脑系统的建议。用自动柜员机进行银行交易的安全性也可以通过使用指纹传感来改进。类似地,也提出在诸如移动电话和智能卡之类的其它便携式电子设备中使用指纹读出装置来作为防止越权使用的方法。
对于许多这类应用,需要这样的指纹读出装置,它很紧凑,特别是在涉及到便携式电子设备的情况下,而且相对便宜。传统的光学图像读出装置需要光源、棱镜和图像传感器,既笨重又昂贵,所以完全不适于这些应用。在其它类型的传感装置中,鉴于其潜在的性能、较小的总体尺寸、易于生产及较低的成本,采用电容传感方法的装置被认为最可靠。这种指纹读出装置一般包括各自包含感测电极的独立传感元件的阵列,指头置于其上,并通过感测由感测电极与上覆的用户指纹的隆起线合作产生的可测电容效应来操作。
在US-A-5325442(PHB 33628)、PCT WO 97/40744(PHB 34068)和PCT IB 98/00407(PHB 34153)中描述了电容指纹读出装置的例子。其中,阵列中的每个传感元件包括通过一个或多个开关器件连接多套地址导体的金属感测电极,并且,传感元件是这样操作的,它利用有源矩阵寻址方案(active matrix addressing scheme)来提供对在感测电极和置于感测表面的个人指纹的相应的上覆的隆起线或沟槽之间形成的单个电容的测量,所述感测表面由覆盖感测电极的介质材料层形成,指头置于其表面上。该装置可以是利用硅晶片的半导体集成电路或薄膜器件的形式,其中,传感元件和地址导体包括薄膜电路单元,它们载于玻璃之类的绝缘基片上,并且是通过淀积薄膜绝缘体、金属层和用于例如二极管或薄膜晶体管的开关器件的非晶或多晶半导体成分并且将它们构成图案而形成的。在EP-A-0790479中描述了以集成芯片形式制造的电容型指纹读出阵列的另一个例子。在这种器件中,每个传感元件包括连接放大器电路的两个横向隔开的感测电极。
虽然这些装置能够满足一些要求,特别是关于紧凑和制造成本方面,但是还需要改进。在使用时可能遇到的一个问题是企图欺诈性操作的问题。可以想象,例如可以用具有表面形态的个人指头的塑料复制品来“骗”装置。因此,要是能够确保其纹路被读取的指头是“活”指头就好了。在用于移动电话、个人数字助理等小型移动产品中时,对于比如其配备的简便性和使用的合宜性,以及与其它部件配合运作的能力来说,也需要进一步改进传感装置的性能。
因此,本发明的目的在于提供能够至少在一定程度上满足这些要求中的一些要求的改进类型的指纹读出装置或包括指纹读出装置的电子设备。
根据本发明的一个方面,提供包括指纹读出装置的电子设备,所述指纹读出装置具有密集的传感元件的阵列,它们载于透明基片上,以便当个人指纹置于阵列上时电容性地感测其隆起线,每个传感元件具有用于与上覆的指纹部分合作产生电容效应的感测电极,其特征在于阵列的传感元件是基本上透明的,并且感测电极由透明的导电材料构成。
由于使感测电极基本透明,而且有电极载于其上的基片本身也是透明的,所以传感装置本身成为基本上透明的。在电容型传感装置中,每一个传感元件的大部分区域被电极占据,感测电极是密堆积的。因此,通过使用透明感测电极,为传感装置提供了基本上的透明性。本发明部分因这种透明性的实现而对于实现附加功能十分有益,而且某些现存类型的电容指纹读出装置很容易就能为此目的而以简单而方便的方式修改,因此,这种传感装置的功能大大提高,并使之能够满足很多需要。特别是它使得在传感元件阵列之下,即在远离指头置于其上的一侧的另一侧,提供现存类型的光学非接触型生物测量传感器成为可能,以便在取指纹进一步验证“活”指头的出现时,通过阵列同时感测另外的指头生物测量特性,比如温度、脉速、血氧含量等,因此降低了欺诈使用的风险,而且不需要例如装置感测区域的任何扩大。
在PCT WO 95/26013中描述了生物测量验证系统,它包括采用摄像机的传统光学型的指纹传感器,以及使用LED发射的可见光与IR光的类型的脉搏血氧定量计传感器和光电探测器。安排后一部件是为了当指头到位时让指头的各边都位于指纹传感器上,因此占据了指纹传感器的更多的外部空间,而且需要一个特殊形状的容纳它们并确定指头必须置入的凹陷的外壳。另一方面,在根据本发明的传感装置中,光学传感器,比如包括LED和光电探测器,可置于装置的基片之后,利用装置的透明性,诸如脉搏、血氧水平、指头温度或皮肤颜色之类的另外的生物测量特性通过阵列、利用反射技术以光学的方法感测,因此保持传感区域的紧凑。而且,不必使用特殊形状的外壳,传感装置的外表面与其外壳的周围部分通常可以是平的。另一种方法是,可以在传感元件阵列的后面使用光学传感装置,所述传感元件阵列是属于仅适用于感测指头的出现的类型。例如,该装置可以包括:光发射器,例如用于发射穿过指纹读出装置的光束的LED;以及用于探测穿过指纹读出装置反射回来的光线的光探测器,所述反射发生在指头置于阵列上时。这种传感装置可以连接到指纹读出装置的驱动控制电路,并且预定当指头置于阵列上且被光学传感装置探测到时,自动启动装置的扫描操作。必须指出,这里使用的光的概念意在包括可见光之外的光谱部分,比如红外线。
在一些情况下可能不必使感测电极透明来实现指纹读出装置的基本透明性,由于围绕感测电极和相关的寻址电路的区域的现成透明性,所以当使用非透明感测电极时,对于某些应用目的来说装置已经足够透明。如果需要,这些透明区域的范围可通过将感测电极占据的传感元件的区域的比例降到最低来优化。因此,根据本发明的另一个方面,提供这样的包括指纹读出装置的电子设备,所述指纹读出装置具有载于透明基片上的隔开的传感元件的阵列,用于电容性地感测置于阵列上的个人指纹的隆起线图案,其特征在于所述装置包括置于与传感元件阵列相对的基片侧的光学传感装置,该光学传感装置对穿过传感元件阵列和基片的光起反应。
光学传感装置又可以是通过指纹读出装置以光学方法感测用户指头的生物测量特性的生物测量传感器,或者是比如用于感测指头出现在阵列上的光学传感装置。
因使用透明感测电极而产生的指纹读出装置的增加的透明性可有利地用于其它目的。特别是传感装置可置于显示装置或其一部分上,同时还使得能够观测显示输出。这种功能在比如移动电话、某些智能卡、个人数字助理和其它便携式电脑之类的使用显示器的便携式电子产品领域内提供了很大优势。关于把指纹读出装置包括在这些产品中的早期建议涉及在远离显示装置的产品外壳区域内安置指纹读出装置,因此必需更大的外壳或者牺牲本可用于其它目的的外壳区域。当以这种方式使用时,显示装置可在指纹读出装置的使用中起辅助作用,例如通过其显示元件指示传感元件阵列所覆盖的区域,继而在显示器上指示指头应该放置的位置,以及向用户提示操作指令。在没有这种一体显示装置的有些智能卡或其它信用卡之类的产品的情况下,可以简单地把指纹读出装置安排成覆盖在有印刷信息的区域,所述信息仍然可通过装置看见。记住,在这种产品中可利用的空间的数量是极为有限的,这会是有利的。
指纹读出装置最好是这样一种,它利用薄膜技术来制造,涉及在玻璃之类的透明绝缘基片上淀积薄膜层并且将它做成图案,例如像上述US-A-5325442、PCT WO 97/40744和PCT IB 98/00407中所描述的。在这些说明书中描述的装置内,传感元件各自包括一个或多个薄膜晶体管型或二极管型的开关器件,并通过一套行扫描地址导体和一套列读取地址导体来寻址。传感元件以适合于提供合乎指纹读取的分辨率的间距密集在一起,每个元件的大部分区域用于感测电极。利用氧化铟锡之类的透明导电材料、而非在这些说明书中所述的铬之类的金属作为感测电极,因此有很高的透明度。可以采用以下方法进一步提高阵列的总的有效透明度:让至少多套地址导体之一也用透明导电材料来形成;或者这样排列开关器件,以便基本上与地址导体重叠、即伸展在地址导体的上面或下面,以便实际上减小各传感元件的总面积内需用于提供开关器件的面积的大小,于是提高了传感元件的有效孔隙率。
为着读出指纹的目的,传感元件的行和列阵列一般占据约2.5至3平方厘米的面积,并包括500行,每行内有500个传感元件。因此阵列的尺寸类似于一般用于移动电话等内的显示器尺寸,因此传感装置可以方便地安置在显示器上占据相同的区域。但是,在有些所用的显示器一般不是正方形而是高度降低的矩形的产品中,可以想象传感装置可以代之以只包括一行或多行提供ID的传感元件,或者依赖于人的指头按击动作的线型传感器,它当指头沿矩阵的横向移动时,可操作提供一系列读数,每个读数代表指纹的相应的线条。然后处理这些读数来建立完整的指纹的电子图像。

在操作这种传感装置时,其指纹要扫描的指头置于感测表面37上。然后,在指纹的隆起线处发生与表面37的实际或紧密的物理接触。指纹轮廓的沟槽以比较大的距离与表面37隔开。所以,隆起的指头表面以由薄介质膜36的厚度决定的最小距离与电极30的阵列隔开,于是,每个感测电极30和指头表面的相应的上覆部分形成电容,指头表面部分有效地处在交流地电位。所述电容作为指头表面和感测表面37之间的间距的函数而变化,因此,由指纹隆起线图案在盘10的传感元件12的阵列上产生的电容变化实际上构成指纹表面的三维形式的电子“图像”。感测这些电容,以及由电路24提供的表示所述电容变化的输出信号,并因此感测指纹的三维轮廓。
该实施例的装置的指纹传感元件阵列是基本上透明的。这是有利地利用这样的事实来实现的:基片是透明材料,最好是玻璃,简单地由诸如氧化铟锡(ITO)的光学透明材料形成最好是多套行和列导体18和20的传感元件12的感测电极30。比如,在行和列导体之间其交叉处的任何必要的绝缘层由氧化硅或氮化硅之类的透明绝缘材料形成。氮化硅或聚酰亚胺的介质覆盖层36类似地也是透明的。
图4示意地示出图2A所示类型的传感元件12的平面图,以便说明典型的元件布局。可见,通常是矩形的感测电极30占据传感元件的大部分面积。要知道在感测电极30的边与行和列导体的各相邻部分之间的区域是透明的,当感测电极30以及行和列导体18和20由透明导电材料形成时,传感元件阵列是基本上透明的。传感元件上透明度可能降低的唯一区域是开关器件处。但是,如图4所示,由薄膜晶体管,或者类似地,如果用二极管代替的话由二极管占据的实际面积与传感元件的总面积相比是很小的,一般约占总传感元件面积的5%至10%,对阵列总的整体透明度的影响是微乎其微的。
根据所需的透明度(这可能根据利用传感器的透明度的特殊方式而变化),可能不必用透明导电材料形成多套地址导体18和20。而其中的一套或两套可能是金属的。这样做,总体透明度不会过度地受到影响,因为这些导体所占的面积相对于阵列的面积是比较小的。如果使用了金属地址导体,为了改善透明度,可以这样安排传感元件的开关器件,使得它们位于相邻的地址导体部分的上面或下面。以这种方式,有效地优化传感元件的设计,因此使透明度最高。
指纹传感器的透明性可有利地用于许多方面。在一个特定的实施例中,可方便地把非接触性的、其传感取决于可见光或IR光之类的光的使用的附加的生物测量传感器置于指纹传感阵列之后。这种结构的实施例图解地示于图5。指纹传感元件阵列10置于外壳50内,用户手指置于其上的感测表面37向外。另一个生物测量传感器60置于外壳之内、在传感阵列之下,以便借助在指纹被感测时直接穿过基本上透明的阵列的光,远程感测个人指头的不同的生物测量特性。生物测量传感器比如可以是脉搏血氧定量计。这样的传感器一般具有光源,比如LED,它发射被导入人体组织和探测器的红色或红外光束,所述探测器接收透过人体组织或者从人体组织反射的光。这种传感器的实施例描述于引作参考的US-A-4759369。发射或反射的光的密度受血液颜色的影响,探测器产生作为血液颜色和个人脉搏的函数的信号,它被分解为指示血液颜色即血氧饱和水平的恒定成分,以及指示脉搏速率的随时间变化的成分。在图5的实施例中,传感器被安排成以反射方式操作,光源61使具有红色和红外成分的光穿过传感阵列10射向个人指头,探测器62接收反射成分。其它类型的可以利用透过指纹传感阵列并包括可见光谱之外的波长范围的射线、以非接触的方式探测生物测量特性的的生物传感器也可代替或结合传感器60来使用。例如,可以想象,传感器60可以是适合于借助从指头发射的红外光的转换来感测个人指头的皮肤温度的温度传感器,或者是适合于用光学方法感测指头的频谱特性的传感器。
因为传感器有效地埋于指纹传感阵列之下,应该指出,其内设置指纹传感阵列10和传感器60的组合的设备的区域可以很紧凑,指纹传感阵列的外表面和外壳的周围部分可以是齐面式的,且通常是平的。以前在用于同时感测指纹和诸如脉搏或血氧饱和度之类的另外的生物测量特性的装置中这是不可能的。
加入用于附加的生物测量特性的传感器,通过提供进一步验证,并降低比如使用指头复制品进行的欺诈蒙骗的可能性,大大增加了识别或验证的安全性。
除生物测量传感器之外的光学传感器也可用于指纹传感元件阵列之后。例如,可以使用光学指头出现传感器。这可包括光学传感装置,所述光学传感装置具有:LED之类的光发射器,用于发射可能是可见光或IR光的光束,它穿过指纹传感元件阵列;以及光电探测器,用于探测穿过阵列的、由指头反射回来的光。这种光学传感装置可以以类似于图5中标号60的装置的方式的提供。该装置可以连接到指纹读出装置的驱动电路,因此,来自光电探测器的、指示指头的出现的输出可以操作用于启动传感元件阵列的扫描驱动。因此,当个人指头置于阵列上时,自动操作指纹读出装置来扫描指纹。
在有些情况下,传感元件阵列可能呈现足够的透明度,使得光学传感装置可以透过阵列感测更多的生物测量特性或者指头的出现,不必使感测电极透明就能成功地操作。例如,在US-A-5325442的那类指纹读出装置中,阵列的透明区域不让非透明的感测电极占据,薄膜晶体管和寻址线可能足够使充分的光穿过阵列,以便位于阵列后面的光学传感装置可以执行其欲执行的功能。例如,可能只一部分由装置产生的光束被非透明的部件阻挡,足够数量的光仍然可以穿过传感元件阵列,并在反射之后达到光学传感装置。如果必要的话,非透明感测电极的尺寸可以减小,以便从比例上增加阵列的透明区域的面积来改善整体透明度。
图6中说明在使用透明感测电极时,指纹传感阵列的增加的透明度的有利应用的另一个实施例,所述图6示出结合在该实施例中包括矩阵液晶显示装置的平面面板显示装置70的指纹传感阵列10。典型的矩阵LC显示装置包括一对通常是玻璃的、略微隔开并沿其周边密封在一起的面板71、72,LC材料73置于介入的空间中。面板载有电极系统和地址导体,它们形成单个显示单元的行和列矩阵阵列,各自可能具有相关的开关器件,比如薄膜三极管。LC显示装置可以利用比如侧光以反射方式操作,或者以发射方式操作,在这种情况下,在装置的远离观察侧的相邻侧一般备有背光。
如图6中所示,显示装置和指纹传感器10具有对应的尺寸,并且,指纹传感器直接置于显示装置的这里以72标出的上面板之上、其输出侧,传感元件阵列居最上方。为简单起见,从图6中略去显示装置和传感阵列的驱动电路和电气连接。可以想象面板72可代替用作直接制造在该面板的表面上的阵列所需的指纹传感器的基片和薄膜元件。当然,显示装置和指纹传感器不必是类似的尺寸。因为具有较大面积的显示装置,所以,可以在该面积的仅仅一部分上形成指纹传感器,或是将指纹传感器的基片附在显示装置的上板的表面上,或是直接在该面板的上表面的一部分上形成阵列。
因为指纹传感器是基本上透明的,所以,由LC显示装置在覆盖着传感器的区域产生的显示易于由此看见。显示装置可以是用来显示数据图形等等的简单的无源点阵型、有源矩阵型;或者是复杂类型的显示器,比如具有七个条码字符等等。矩阵显示装置通常使用多套行和列导体,显示元件位于其间,这样类似于指纹传感阵列的结构。因此,可以安排在传感器阵列和显示元件阵列中的行和列导体的间距相关联,在传感器阵列中的行和列导体对准显示元件阵列中的行和列导体,因此,尤其是如果那些地址导体由金属而非氧化铟锡构成时,传感器阵列的地址导体不会使显示输出模糊。
虽然LC显示装置用于本实施例,但是也可以代之以使用包括比如电致发光或电致变色显示服务的其它类型的光电材料的其它类型的显示装置也可代替使用。
诸如LC显示装置之类的平面面板显示广泛用于各种便携式电子产品,诸如膝上型电脑或笔记本电脑、PDA、个人记事本(personalorganiser)、蜂窝式及无绳移动电话机、传呼机等。在这些产品中的指纹传感有利于用户验证目的,传感器与显示装置以上述方式的结合特别有利。在这些产品中的空闲空间经常很短缺,但是通过安排指纹传感器覆盖显示装置,传感器和显示器占据相同的面积,所以,不必把独立于显示器之外的产品区域用于提供指纹传感器。
图7和8分别示出装有指纹传感器的移动电话和笔记本电脑。参考图7,指纹传感器10结合在电话机外壳的显示窗80内,覆盖来以类似于图6的装置的方式显示用户信息的LC显示面板70。参考图8,指纹传感器覆盖LC显示面板70的较小部分面积。为了帮助用户正确地在指纹传感器上放置指头,如果必要的话,可以安排显示面板提供指示指纹传感器的位置的显示。在这两种产品中,使用指纹传感器的操作指令可以显示在面板上。
显示装置可以是很简单的类型,也许具有固定的显示输出。在这方面,可以想象,指纹读出装置可安装在照亮的按键开关上,当它被照亮时,显示固定的图标或指令,比如“按键”,这是可以通过传感装置看见的。可安排开关这样操作指纹读出装置,便得只通过执行显示的指令,就可以自动扫描个人指头。
其内指纹读出装置可用于提供额外的安全性的便携式电子产品的另一个实施例是智能卡。曾建议在这种产品中安装小的显示装置如LCD,在这种情况下,透明的指纹读出装置可类似地置于显示装置上。但是,透明指纹读出装置也可有利地用于智能卡或类似产品中,无需显示装置。装置的透明度使出现在装置之下的印刷信息可被看见。图9是智能卡范例85的平面图,它具有集成的指纹读出装置10和备选的下覆的显示装置70。
通过阅读本公开,其它改型对于本专业的技术人员是显然的。这样的改型可能涉及:在指纹读出装置、结合这些装置的产品及其部件的领域内已经知道的其它特征,以及用于代替或结合这里已经描述的特征的其它特征。

Claims (15)

1.一种包括指纹读出装置的电子设备,所述指纹读出装置具有隔开的感测元件的阵列,它们载于透明基片上,以便当个人指纹置于阵列上时电容性地感测其隆起线,每个感测元件包括用于与上覆的指纹部分合作产生电容效应的感测电极,其特征在于所述阵列的所述感测元件是基本上透明的,并且所述感测电极由透明导电材料构成。
2.根据权利要求1的电子设备,其特征在于:所述感测元件排列成行和列矩阵,并且通过载于基片上且延伸在所述感测元件之间的多套行和列地址导体来寻址。
3.根据权利要求2的电子设备,其特征在于:至少一套所述地址导体由透明导电材料构成。
4.根据权利要求2或3的电子设备,其特征在于:每个感测元件包括至少一个开关器件,后者连接到所述感测电极,并且被这样安排、以便基本上与地址导体重叠。
5.根据权利要求1至4中任一个的电子设备,其特征在于:所述感测元件阵列置于显示装置之上,后者的显示输出透过所述感测元件阵列。
6.根据权利要求5的电子设备,其特征在于:显示装置包括液晶显示装置。
7.根据权利要求5的电子设备,其特征在于:所述装置包括移动通信装置。
8.根据权利要求5的电子设备,其特征在于:所述装置包括便携式电脑。
9.根据权利要求1或权利要求5的电子设备,其特征在于:所述装置包括智能卡。
10.根据权利要求1的电子设备,其特征在于:所述装置包括电气开关,并且,所述感测元件阵列延伸于可被照亮的开关激励元件上。
11.一种包括指纹读出装置的电子设备,所述指纹读出装置具有隔开的感测元件的阵列,它们载于透明基片上,以便在个人指纹置于阵列上的地方电容性地感测其隆起线图案,其特征在于:所述装置包括置于基片的、与所述感测元件阵列相对的一侧的光学传感装置,该光学传感装置对穿过所述感测元件阵列和所述基片的光作出反应。
12.根据权利要求1至4或权利要求11之一的电子设备,其特征在于:在所述基片之下设置生物测量传感装置,用于通过所述感测元件阵列用光学方法感测另外的生物测量特性。
13.根据权利要求12的电子设备,其特征在于:所述传感器装置包括利用穿过所述感测元件阵列的红外光和可见光的脉搏血氧传感器。
14.根据权利要求1至4或权利要求12之一的电子设备,其特征在于:在所述基片之下设置光学传感装置,并且安排所述光学传感装置通过所述感测元件阵列以光学方法感测上覆所述感测元件阵列的指头的出现。
15.根据权利要求14的电子设备,其特征在于:所述光学传感装置连接到所述指纹读出装置的驱动电路,并且预定感测到指头的出现时,启动所述指纹读出装置。
