双向交互电视系统
本申请是中国专利申请97193320．0的分案申请。
本发明总的来说涉及交互电视系统，更具体地说涉及一个集成了寻呼通信技术的交互电视系统，允许该交互电视系统与一个中央台站之间实现双向通信。
在用户电视工业中，有许多情况需要中央台站的电视信号提供者与电视观众之间的双向通信。在无线广播电视、有线电视、C波段卫星和直接卫星广播的情况下，从电视信号提供者到电视观众之间的链路能被很好地建立起来，且有宽的带宽，能够运载许许多多的信息(既包括电视信号又包括其他的模拟和数字信息)。一直存在的问题是如何建立一个从电视观众返回到电视信号提供者的第二通信链路。
这个问题最通用的解决办法是利用电话链路。许多电缆系统和直接广播卫星系统就用这个解决办法，利用电话来提供从电视观众到电视信号提供者的链路。但其问题之一是任何一台电视接收机(例如电缆盒，直接卫星接收机或其它的顶置盒)必须位于电话插口附近或者相当长度的电话电缆必须从接收机拉到电话插口。另一个问题是当电视观众正在用该电话进行正常呼叫时该电话链路不能同时使用。
有人提出的另一个解决办法是包括建立一个新的无线电频率(RF)系统，允许从电视观众至电视信号提供者经一个RF链路进行通信。但是，这个系统可能需要建立一个复盖广袤的地理区域的新的通信基础结构。这样的一个系统实现起来造价太高。
本发明的一个目的是在电视观众与电视信号提供者之间提供一个低价格的双向通信链路。
本发明的另一个目的是在电视观众与电视信号提供者之间利用现有的寻呼技术提供一个双向通信链路。
本发明的进一步目的是允许电视观众用将命令输入遥控单元的方法从信息提供者那里定购产品或选择付费的电视节目，从而产生一个寻呼消息发送给信息提供者。
本发明的另一些目的、优点和新特征将在下面进行描述，它们对于那些本行业的熟练人员来说在读了下面的描述之后将是显而易见的，或者在实施了本发明之后即能从中了解到。本发明的这些目的和优点可以通过各种装置及其组合来实现和达到。

在本发明的具体实施例中，电视观众与位于中央台站的信息提供者之间进行通信的方法包括的步骤为：在电视上给电视观众显示一个提示，要求电视观众进行选择，经电视、录象机或顶置盒的遥控单元从电视观众那里收到观众的选择，从遥控单元发射一个与观众的选择相对应的命令信号给顶置盒，将命令信号转换成寻呼消息，以及借助于寻呼发射机在无线链路中将寻呼消息发射给信息提供者。

图1是表示按照本发明的一个双向交互电视系统的方框图。在本发明的该优选的实施例中，一个电视系统包括一台电视机10，该电视机10经利用频道3或4的RF连接线、基带视频和声频连接线、S-视频连接成或任何其他的声频信号和视频信号通信的一般方法与顶置盒12相连。在各种不同的实施例中，顶置盒12可以是一个电缆盒、卫星接收机或任何其他型式的用户电子设备如录相机(VCR)或仅是一台电子节目指南装置。该顶置盒12包括一个寻呼发射机16用于发送信息，还可能包括一个寻呼接收机14用于接收信息。
图2是表示按照本发明的电视系统的另一个实施例的方框图。在这个实施例中，寻呼发射机16和寻呼接收机14包含在电视18中。
本发明的该优选的实施例利用双向寻呼服务来提供从电视观众到电视信号提供者的通信。这个系统在电视机、顶置盒或者其他的用户电子设备上增加一个低价格的寻呼发射机，以便提供从电视观众返回到电视信号提供者的通信。这个系统的一个优点是它不需要象上面所建议的RF系统那样建立新的通信基础结构。
为从电视观众到电视信号提供者的通信而利用双向寻呼服务的另一个优点是低价格的寻呼接收机可能被加到电视、顶置盒或其他的用户电子设备上，以便提供从电视信号提供者到电视观众的另一个通信通道。
在另一个实施例中，一个顶置盒、电视或其他的用户电子设备能够被增设上双向寻呼服务的寻呼发射机和寻呼接收机这二者，用于与信息提供者而不是与电视信号提供者进行通信。可以利用这个系统进行通信的信息类型可以包括能够由调制解调器提供给一台个人计算机的任何型式的信息，同时利用了显示信息的电视屏幕及本地用户电子设备(如录相机、顶置盒、电视)遥控单元或通用遥控器作为用户的输入设备。
双向寻呼在美国也称为“确认寻呼(acknowkdge paging)”，使用一组由美国联邦通信委员会(FCC)在900MHz频谱上规定的无线信道。另外，双向寻呼也被称成“窄带个人通信服务(NPCS)”。它运行的频谱比单路寻呼要宽，因此它能够发射更大量的信息。双向寻呼将简单的消息通知扩展到广泛的、汇集的、大信息量的消息服务。双向寻呼使用一个出站通信信道用于发送消息给寻呼机，并使用一个入站通信信道用于接收寻呼机的响应。现有的双向寻呼服务的例子包括：SKYTEL公司采用的SKYTEL TWO-WAY以及移动电信技术公司采用的SKYPAGEⅡ。SKYTEL TWO-WAY系统所用的寻呼机硬件技术是摩托罗拉公司生产的TANGO寻呼机。在双向寻呼服务中所用的网络协议的例子包括摩托罗拉公司采用的REFLEX系列网络协议和ATT公司采用的pACT技术。
图3是本发明的方框图。电视信号20输入到顶置盒12并由调谐器22处理。该TV信号能够通过无线天线由电缆、卫星接收或由任何其他的一般电视通信介质接收。被调谐的电视节目由控制器送到TV10显示给TV的观众26观看。在本优选实施例中，控制器24是一个可编程微处理器，虽然其他的控制电路也可以使用。在电视购物、付费电视或其他的交互电视应用中，在TV上所显示的节目提示TV观众26根据TV屏幕上出现的信息进行选择或挑选。例如，提示可能回答TV观众他或她是否愿意购买付费电视的收看权、购买已播广告的产品、或者答复一个调查问题。为了选择或发送返回信息给电视节目的制作者或者在中央台站的其他实体，TV观众在遥控单元28上按下一个合适的按钮(图中未示出)。遥控单元是一个用户电子设备(如电视、录像机等)的一般的遥控器，上面有许多用户输入按钮。遥控单元对按钮按下作出反应并将相应的命令信号经红外线发射机(I／R TRANS)30通过红外线链路32发送给位于顶置盒12中的红外线接收机(I／R RCV)34。I／R RCV34将命令信号向前送至控制器24去处理。控制器24指示寻呼发射机16去发送一个消息给信息提供者38(在逆向无线链路中经过网络运行中心NOC37)。该消息包括一个唯一的观众识别符、一个数据服务识别符和该观众的选择或响应(例如一个购买命令)。数据服务识别符识别正被登播广告的具体产品或正提供给观众的服务。信息提供者38可以是电视台、广播或电缆电视网、广告商、电视购物公司、个人通信服务网或任何其他的信息提供者，经任何通信介质为TV观众26服务。
寻呼发射机16按照一般双向寻呼的运行方法来运作，将消息在TV观众的位置从顶置盒12发送到中央台站的信息提供者38。另外的设计是，信息提供者38通过网络运行中心37在前向链路40上发送一个确定消息给寻呼接收机14，以响应TV观众的选择。该确定的消息向前传送给控制器24以便在TV10上显示，因而提供了直接的反馈给TV观众：他的(她的)选择已被收到和认可了。
用于本发明的寻呼网络是一个高速的群交换网，每分钟至少能够发送和接收几百条消息。网络包括两条独立的通道：前向通道和逆向通道，由网络运行中心和个人消息单元(PMU)将它们“捆绑”在一起。在本优选实施例中，前向信道表示为前向无线链路40，逆向信道表示为逆向无线链路36。PMU部分表示为寻呼发射机16和寻呼接收机14，合并在顶置盒12中。寻呼发射机16和寻呼接收机14也可集成在顶置盒12中。组合寻呼发射机和寻呼接收机的具体装置是摩托罗拉公司生产的PAGEWRITER双向消息单元。PAGEWRITER系统能够与其他的寻呼机、传真机或因特网电子邮件地址进行通信。在本实施例中，寻呼接收机14在940-941MHz频段内工作，信道间隔50KHz，比特率6400bps。它支持3200bps至6400bps的4电平移频键控信号(FSK)，4电平运作的频偏是±800Hz和±2400Hz。寻呼接收机也有一个±50KHz上的60dB选择性。在本实施例中，寻呼发射机在901-902MHz频段内工作，信道间隔为12．5KHz，比特率为9600bps。它支持800、1600、6400和9600bps的4电平FSK，4电平运作的频偏是±80Hz和±2400Hz。
前向无线链路40是一个宽域的无线电和电视同播的系统，它使用四个副信道。同播是无线电频率(RF)传输的一种方法，能够复盖十分广袤的地理区域，它使用多台发射机(未画出)运作在同一频率上，在一个给定的区域内发射相同的数据。前向信道的分配是经卫星至卫星的下行链路从位于每个发射机站的MOC来流动的。每个副信道被调制成有四电平的移频键控，它以6400比特／秒工作。这些信道能够独立地用于大容量寻呼或组合成25600比特／秒的通过能力以便传递大量数据给寻呼接收机14。这个通过能力是利用已知的多载频调制(MCM)技术结合摩托罗拉公司的商用REFLEX50寻呼规程来达到的。
逆向无线链路36使寻呼发射机16与接收机的网络(未画出)相连。接收机经电话线和帧转播(frame-relay)网连到NOC37。在一个宽域的同播系统中，需要使用多台接收机散布在一个给定的区域内以便保证逆向信道的复盖。由于逆向信道的寻呼发射机16是定向发射的，所以接收机必须散布开来，以便确保不管寻呼发射机的地点和位置如何总有一个接收机可以接收到。
网络运行中心(NOC)37接收来自寻呼发射机的消息，将消息分配给信息提供者和其他的网络用户，收集确认和响应，并经寻呼接收机将它们回传给消息源。此外，NOC自动登记电视观众的顶置盒12的位置。采用本结构并且使用四个独立的副信道的话，该系统的能力为：每个NOC有200万至300万名电视观众。
本发明已在它现时所思考的最好方式中被描述过了，很显然，对本发明可以进行各种不同的修正、运作方式和具体装置，但所有这些修改是在那些熟练技术的能力和技术中进行的、未作进一步发明活动的试验。因此，申请人希望通过专利保护由下面权利要求书所定义的发明。

Claims (21)

1．一种用于提供从观看着由遥控单元控制的电视的观众至位于中心台站的信息提供者的通信通道的装置，包括：
接收来自电视观众所操作的遥控单元的命令信号并将命令信号转换成消息的装置；以及
与上述的接收和转换装置相耦合的寻呼发射机，将消息在无线链路中发射给信息提供者。
2．如权利要求1的装置，进一步包括一个在第二无线链路中接收来自信息提供者的第二消息的寻呼接收机，以及一个在电视上显示第二消息的装置。
3．一种用于控制电视并在操作遥控单元的电视观众与位于中央台站的信息提供者之间提供双向通信的装置，包括：
一个寻呼发射机，在第一无线链路中发射第一消息给信息提供者；
一个寻呼接收机，在第二无线链路中接收来自信息提供者的消息；以及
与寻呼发射机和寻呼接收机相耦的装置，用于接收来自由电视观众所操作的遥控单元的命令信号并将该命令信号转换成第一消息，并且将第二消息显示在电视上。
4．一种由遥控单元所控制并包含从电视的观众至位于中央台站的信息提供者的通信通道的电视机，包括：
从电视观众所操作的遥控单元接收命令信号并将该命令信号转换成消息的装置；以及
与接收装置和转换装置相耦的寻呼发射机，在无线链路中将消息发射给信息提供者。
5．如权利要求4的电视机，进一步包括：一个在第二无线链路接收从信息提供者来的第二消息的寻呼接收机，和一个在电视上显示该第二消息的装置。
6．一种用于在操作遥控单元以控制电视的电视观众与位于中央台站的电视信号提供者之间进行双向通信的系统，包括：
一个红外接收机，接收来自遥控单元的命令信号；
一个寻呼发射机，在第一无线链路中将第一消息发射给电视信号提供者；
一个寻呼接收机，在第二无线链路中接收从电视信号提供者来的第二消息；以及
与红外接收机、寻呼发射机和寻呼接收机相耦的装置，用于控制命令信号的接收、电视信号的接收、在电视上显示电视信号、将命令信号转换成第一消息、传送第一消息以及接收第二消息。
