背景
本发明总体涉及在视频分配系统中向多个用户提供视频信息。
目前的视频分配系统包括有线和卫星电视提供商提供的按收视付费的系统。在这些系统中,提供各种不同的按收视付费的电影供在许多不同的时间观看。用户必须或者参加收看正在进行中的视频节目(video),或者等到新的视频节目在预定时间开始。通过提供多个不同的开始时间,这些系统试图接近视频点播的程度。
为了在用户希望得到视频节目的精确时间向多个用户提供视频节目,人们可能预期需要有较大的带宽。就是说,在有大量观众的条件下,就现有卫星和有线视频分配系统可提供的带宽来说,在多个不同的时间传送不同的视频看来是有困难的。
这意味着系统用户必须按视频分配系统的现有带宽限制调整他们的收视需求。如果这些收视需求不符合现有系统的能力,就会失去潜在的用户。
所以,需要提供一种允许根据用户的需求进行视频分配的视频分配系统。
发明概述
按照一个实施例,用于从视频发射器接收视频信息的接收机包括用于存储由接收机接收的视频信息的存储媒体。使解密引擎适合于对所存储的视频信息解密。使控制器适合于控制视频存储媒体和解密引擎并且适合于为引擎请求解密信息。

详细描述
参看图1,视频分配系统10可以在各种不同的视频分配环境(例如包括有线电视(cable)、电视广播或卫星)中实现。视频提供者14-例如有线电视提供者或卫星系统,如16所指示的那样,向多个可以是基于处理器的电视接收机的接收机12传输视频节目。基于处理器的电视接收机例如可以是用电视接收机作为显示器的所谓机顶盒计算机系统。作为替代,也可以使用其它的计算机系统或应用装置。
可以不在对应于视频节目要被观看的时间的设定时间或预定时间传输视频,而是连续地或半连续地把视频节目以加密的形式流向所有的接收机。作为替代方案,可以简单地提前传输视频节目并存储在多个接收机上。单独的接收机12(如果没有额外的信息)可能不能显示所传输的视频信息。所以,在系统给定的带宽条件下可能的程度上,可以把视频节目传输到接收机12并存储在它上面,例如存储在存储器22中,供以后观看。
当用户在任何时刻想要观看特定视频信息-例如电影时,用户只要例如向视频提供者14请求解密信息就可以。在双路传输方案中,对解密信息的请求可以通过传送视频节目的同一个传送装置传输。作为替代,也可以使用单独的媒体或信道。此外,在本发明的一个实施例中,可以从不同于视频提供者14的源请求解密信息。
解密信息然后可以(在一个例子中)与无关的视频信息一起被传输到接收机12。例如,在控制器15的控制下,可以将解密信息连同关于目标接收者的信息一起提供。如果接收机12配备有用于特定视频节目(诸如电影)的解密密钥,接收机12就能对视频节目解密,让观众能观看点播的视频。
如果接收机12每个都包含独有的标识符,解密信息是针对发出请求的接收机编码的,则只有其标识符和与解密密钥一起传送的标识符相符的接收机才能对所请求的视频节目的解密密钥解码。此外,如果接收机请求解密信息,则可能不仅仅要向接收机提供解密信息,而且可能要执行相应的计费条款。
举例来说,对解密信息的请求,可以通过电话网20传送。再例如,可以通过电子网络(诸如因特网)用电子邮件作出请求。所以,在一个实施例中实际上可以用备用信道(back channel)来从视频提供者或其它源请求解密信息。视频提供者(或其它源)然后可以提供解密信息,不仅如此,在本发明的一个实施例中,还可以提供为选定的视频信息访问接收机的存储器所需的信息。该访问信息可以以脚本或其它软件的形式提供。
存储视频传输可能要投入预定数量的存储空间。当向给定接收机传输的视频传输的量超过专用存储空间时,可以将最老的信息删除,腾出空间存储最近接收的信息。或者,视频提供者14可以在每次发送新的视频节目时提供信号,要求丢弃以往在给定接收机12上存储的特定视频节目。
在一个例子中,由于可以将视频节目在观看时间之前传输到接收机12,所以可以克服带宽限制。就是说,不必为满足大量用户的需求而同时地传送多个大的视频文件。相反是将一系列视频传输源源不断地传输到所有或部分的接收机组,接收机将这些传输存储起来供以后调用。
现在参看图2,按照一个实施例,可以将用于实现视频点播系统的软件存储在接收机12上。软件26一开始可以接收和存储加密的视频节目,如方框28中所示。在一个实施例中,这可以在传输信道中的通信量低时的一些特定时刻进行,也可以连续地或半连续地进行传输,以便在接收机12上存储一个视频文件库。
在有对视频节目的请求时-如菱形框30中所示的那样,接收机12请求解密密钥,如方框32中所示。在本发明的一个实施例中,可以通过网络20(诸如因特网或电话网)经由备用信道传送该请求。然后,将以加密的形式存储在接收机12上的视频节目检索出来,如方框34中所示。然后可以自动地解密该视频节目(如方框36中所示),然后可以开始显示视频节目(如方框38中所示)。
一般来说,也许需要为给定视频节目的分段或部分传送解密密钥。这样的话,要观看整个视频节目,接收机就必须接收一个或多个视频节目解密密钥,每个解密密钥可用来解密局部的(少于全部的)视频信息。这个技术的优点是,盗用者要想解密整个视频节目,就必须获得大量的视频节目解密密钥。这增加了盗用解密密钥的难度,减少了服务被盗用的可能性。例如,每一分钟的视频节目可以需要新的解密密钥。所以,在作出对解密信息的初始请求后,可能需要每分钟传送一个新的解密密钥。
如果用户希望暂停进行中的视频传输(菱形框40),可以例如经由备用信道向视频提供者14发送信号,请求暂停特许(方框42)。视频提供者的响应可以是发送一个确认号(方框44)。当用户希望恢复传输时,用户只要按下“恢复”键并提供该确认号即可。视频提供者于是就知道该特定接收机是何时暂停的,然后提供适当的密钥,让用户能继续观看其余的视频节目-这是已经请求过的(可能是记过费的)。
现在转看图3,图中展示了一例可用作接收机12的系统。接收机12可包含与加速图形端口(AGP)芯片集66相连的处理器65。位于美国加利福尼亚州的Santa Clara的因特尔公司提供加速图形端口接口规范2.0版。芯片集66可以连接到系统存储器68和加速图形端口总线70。总线70又可以连接到图形加速器72,后者也连接到视频或电视接收机73。
芯片集66也可以连接到接收电视调谐/捕获卡76的总线74。可以将卡76连接到电视天线78,后者例如也可以是卫星天线或有线连接。也可以提供至网络90的连接,例如至因特网的调制解调器连接或者至计算机网络的网络控制器连接。
总线74可以连接到桥接器80,后者又可以连接到硬盘驱动器82。硬盘驱动器82可以存储软件26和46。软件100可以是从发射器14传输出的脚本,用于帮助定位所存储的视频信息。
桥接器80又可以连接到另一个支持串行输出接口86和BIOS 94的总线84。接口86可以连接到调制解调器92或鼠标88。
以上结合数量有限的实施例说明了本发明,不过本领域的熟练人员显然知道能从中得出许多的修改和变体。后附的权利要求旨在包含所有这种属于本发明的精神和范围内的修改和变体。

Claims (20)

1.一个从视频发射器接收视频信息的接收机,包括:
用于存储由接收机接收的视频信息的存储媒体;
适合于解密所存储的视频信息的解密引擎;
适合于控制存储媒体和解密引擎并为引擎请求解密信息的控制器。
2.权利要求1的接收机,其中,所述控制器包含处理器。
3.权利要求1的接收机,其中,所述引擎适合于在接收到要观看所存储的视频节目的请求时解密所存储的视频节目。
4.一种视频传输系统,包含:
向多个接收机传输用于以后显示的视频节目的视频发射器;
向所述接收机传输用来在请求时启动视频节目的解密信息的控制器。
5.权利要求4的系统,其中,所述控制器也适合于传输标识接收所述解密信息的特定接收机的标识符。
6.权利要求5的系统,其中,所述控制器是所述发射器的一部分。
7.权利要求4的系统,其中,所述视频发射器经由有线系统传输视频节目。
8.权利要求4的系统,其中,所述视频发射器经由卫星系统传输视频节目。
9.权利要求4的系统,其中,所述发射器也发送用来帮助定位由所述发射器传输到所述接收机的特定视频文件的信息。
10.一种视频传输方法,包括:
在接收机中存储加密的视频节目;
请求用于所述被存储的视频节目的解密密钥。
11.权利要求10的方法,包括从一个源接收加密的视频节目并从第二个源接收解密密钥。
12.权利要求10的方法,包括从同一个源接收视频节目和所述解密密钥。
13.权利要求10的方法,包括接收用来标识要接收所述密钥的特定接收机的标识符。
14.一种视频分配方法,包括:
存储供接收者选择的视频节目;
接收者发出请求时,允许接收者选择观看所存储的视频节目。
15.权利要求14的方法,包含提供显示可供用户选择的视频信息的图形用户界面。
16.一种包含用于存储使基于处理器的系统执行下列操作的指令的媒体的产品:
存储供接收者选择的视频节目;
接收者发出请求时,允许接收者选择先前存储的视频节目供观看。
17.一种包含用于存储使基于处理器的系统执行下列操作的指令的媒体的产品:
将加密的视频节目存储到接收机;
为所述被存储的视频节目请求解密密钥。
18.权利要求17的产品,包含使基于处理器的系统从一个源接收加密的视频节目并从第二个源接收解密密钥的指令。
19.权利要求17的产品,包含使基于处理器的系统从同一个源接收视频节目和所述解密密钥的指令。
