Description
Die Erfindung betrifft eine optische Fokussiereinrichtung
mit variabler Brennweite.
Optische Fokussiersysteme mit veränderlicher Brennweite wer
den in weitem Umfang in optischen Abbildungssystemen wie etwa
Kameras, Teleskopen, Fernrohren und Projektoren verwendet.
Solche Systeme weisen typischerweise eine oder mehrere Linsen
aus Glas oder Kunststoff auf, deren Stellung durch einen mecha
nischen Antrieb verändert werden kann, so daß eine kontinuier
liche Änderung der Brennweite resultiert.
Eine variable Fokussierwirkung ist auch in einem System ver
wirklicht worden, in dem sich Licht streuende Teilchen inner
halb eines fluiden Mediums verteilt befinden und durch ein
angelegtes elektrisches oder magnetisches Feld in einer geeig
neten Anordnung befinden. Ferner wird mit der US-Patentschrift
35 31 185 eine Lichtführung beschrieben,
in deren Verlauf das Licht beim Durchtritt durch ein mit Licht
streuenden Teilchen dotiertes fluides Medium wiederholt fokus
siert wird, wobei die Erzielung einer größeren oder kleineren
Brennweite von der Stärke des angelegten Feldes abhängt.
Flüssigkristallmaterialien sind nunmehr gut bekannt. Die Be
sonderheit dieser Materialien besteht darin, daß sie zusätzlich
zu einer festen Phase und einer isotropen flüssigen Phase wenig
stens eine halb-geordnete, mesomorphe Phase aufweisen. Zu den
gut bekannten mesomorphen Phasen gehören die smektische Phase,
die nematische Phase und die cholesterinische Phase; hiervon ist
die nematische Phase im Zusammenhang mit der vorliegenden Er
findung von besonderer Bedeutung. Die Moleküle von nematischen
Flüssigkristallmaterialien haben typischerweise stabförmige
oder gegebenenfalls scheibenförmige Gestalt. Bei Molekülen mit
stabförmiger Gestalt wird die mittlere Richtung der Längsachse
der Moleküle in einem begrenzten Bereich als Ausrichtung (engl.
"director") dieses Bereichs bezeichnet; bei Molekülen mit schei
benförmiger Gestalt wird die Richtung senkrecht zur Scheiben
fläche als Ausrichtung bezeichnet. In der nematischen Phase
eines nematischen Flüssigkristallmaterials sind die Ausrichtun
gen bzw. die ausgerichteten Bereiche des Materials in einer
bevorzugten Richtung festgelegt.
Flüssigkristallmaterialien werden hauptsächlich in Anzeige
einrichtungen und Wiedergabegeräten angewandt. Beispielsweise
wird mit einem Beitrag von R. A. Soref "Electronically Scanned
Analog Liquid Crystal Displays" in Applied Optics, 9, S. 1323
bis 1329 (Juni 1970) ein optisches Anzeigegerät beschrieben,
das zwischen optisch durchlässigen, elektrisch leitenden Elek
troden sandwichartig eingebettet eine Dünnschicht aus Flüssig
kristallmaterial aufweist. Als Folge der angelegten Spannung
gehen Bereiche der Flüssigkristallschicht aus dem durchlässigen
Zustand in einen Licht streuenden Zustand über, wodurch eine
Änderung des sichtbaren Eindrucks auftritt. Ein Gerät mit un
durchlässigen Elektroden wird in der US-Patentschrift
36 74 342 beschrieben, das besonders
geeignet für die Anzeige von Linien, Strichen und dgl. zu sein
scheint.
Neben der Anwendung in optischen Anzeigen ist die Anwendung
von Flüssigkristallmaterialien auch für andere Zwecke vorge
schlagen worden. Beispielsweise wird mit der US-Patentschrift
37 41 629 die Anwendung einer Schicht aus Flüssig
kristallmaterial in Kombination mit ringförmigen Elektroden
angegeben, um eine elektrisch gesteuerte Iris bereitzustellen.
Eine Fokussiereinrichtung der im Oberbegriff des Anspruchs 1
genannten Art ist aus der DE-OS 26 39 556 bekannt. Die Fo
kussiereinrichtung ist speziell ausgelegt für eine optische
Leseeinrichtung zum Lesen von Daten, die in einer Spur
aufgezeichnet sind. Die Daten werden ausgelesen mit Hilfe
einer Laserstrahlungsquelle, die einen linear polarisierten
Laserstrahl erzeugt, der von der Fokussiereinrichtung auf
die Spur fokussiert wird.
Demgegenüber liegt der Erfindung die Aufgabe zugrunde, eine
Fokussiereinrichtung zu schaffen, bei der die veränderliche
Brennweite unabhängig von der Polarisierung ist, so daß sich
die Fokussiereinrichtung auch überall dort einsetzen läßt,
wo nicht-polarisiertes oder nicht linear-polarisiertes
Licht vorhanden ist.
Zu den möglichen Anwendungen der erfindungsgemäßen Fokussier
einrichtung gehören Kameras, Teleskope, Fernrohre, Projek
toren, Brillen und Augengläser.
Nachfolgend werden mit Bezugnahme auf die Figur eine
Ausführungsform der Erfindung erläutert:
Die Figur zeigt eine auseinandergezogene Darstellung der
Ausführungsform.
Zur Ausführungsform gehören durchlässige Substrate 23, mit
einander zugewandten konkaven Oberflächen, die mit optisch
durchlässigen, elektrisch leitenden Elektroden 24 beschichtet
sind, die ihrerseits mit Ausrichtungsschichten 25 und 26 über
zogen sind. Zwischen den durchlässigen Substraten 23 ist eine
durchlässige Platte 27 angeordnet, die ebenfalls mit Ausrich
tungsschichten 28 und 29 überzogen ist. Die Schichten 25 und 28
erteilen den ausgerichteten Bereichen des in dem Spalt zwischen
den Schichten 25 und 28 enthaltenden Flüssigkristallmaterial eine
bevorzugte Richtung "x". Die Schichten 26 und 29 erteilen den aus
gerichteten Bereichen des Flüssigkristallmaterials innerhalb des
Spalts zwischen den Schichten 26 und 29 eine bevorzugte Richtung
"y" senkrecht zur Richtung "x". Die Elektroden 24 sind an einen
Spannungsgenerator 30 angeschlossen, wodurch zwischen den Elek
troden 24 ein elektrisches Feld erzeugt wird.
Die dargestellte Ausführungsform kann als eine Ein
richtung mit zwei Kristallinsen veränderlicher Brennweite an
gesehen werden, wobei jede Linse eine variable Fokussier
wirkung auf die senkrecht polarisierten Komponenten des in
z-Richtung einfallenden Lichtes ausübt. Der bezüglich des
zwischen den Schichten 25 und 28 angeordneten Körpers aus
Flüssigkristallmaterial ordentliche Strahl stellt gegenüber
dem zwischen den Schichten 26 und 29 angeordneten Körper aus
Flüssigkristallmaterial den außerordentlichen Strahl dar, und
umgekehrt. Zusammengenommen erzeugen diese beiden Körper aus
Flüssigkristallmaterial als Folge auf ein veränderliches elek
trisches Feld zwischen den Elektroden 24 eine variable Fokus
sierwirkung auf in z-Richtung ankommendes Licht unabhängig von
der Polarisation dieses ankommenden Lichtes.
Die Ausrichtungsmaterialien können vorgesehen werden, um anfäng
lich bevorzugte Richtungen parallel zu den Festlegungsschich
ten zu erteilen, wie das in der Figur dargestellt ist. Mit
alternativen Ausrichtungsmaterialien kann eine anfängliche be
vorzugte Richtung im wesentlichen senkrecht zu den Ausrichtungs
schichten erteilt werden. Um im zuletzt genannten Falle die
Brennweite zu verändern, können elektrische oder magnetische
Felder benutzt werden, um die Ausrichtung auf eine Richtung
parallel zu den Ausrichtungsschichten zu neigen.
Der Körper aus Flüssigkristallmaterial kann sich zwischen den
Oberflächen befinden, welche den Körpern eine Bi-Konvex-Form
verleihen, wie das in der Figur dargestellt ist. Im einzelnen
können die Körper aus Flüssigkristallmaterial jede beliebige
Gestalt aufweisen und jeweils sogar einfach aus einer Schicht
von einheitlicher Dicke bestehen. Im zuletzt genannten Falle
kann zur Erzielung einer Fokussierwirkung ein Feld benutzt
werden, dessen Stärke vom Mittelpunkt in Richtung auf die
Kanten der Schicht abgestuft ist. Es ist weiterhin möglich,
eine Schicht von einheitlicher Dicke gemeinsam mit einem
gleichförmigen Feld zu verwenden; in diesem Falle stellt
das Flüssigkristallmaterial eine veränderliche optische Weg
länge dar, und es sind andere optische Bauteile vorgesehen,
um die tatsächliche Fokussierung durchzuführen. Ferner kann
das Feld, in dem sich die Körper aus Flüssigkristallmaterial
befinden, abgestuft sein, um die gesamte, oder einen Teil der
Fokussierkraft dieser Körper zu verstärken oder abzuschwächen.
Die Auswahl besonderer Flüssigkristallmaterialien für die Zwecke
der Erfindung kann von einer Anzahl von Materialeigenschaften
abhängen, wie etwa von dem Temperaturbereich, innerhalb dem das
Material eine nematische Phase bildet; weiterhin von der Leich
tigkeit, mit welcher die ausgerichteten Bereiche auf eine Än
derung der Feldstärke ansprechen, weiterhin von der Schwellen
feldstärke, und sofern ein elektrisches Feld benutzt wird, vom
Widerstand des Materials. In einem elektrischen Feld sind Ma
terialien mit hohem Widerstandswert besonders geeignet, da in
solchen Materialien eine vom elektrischen Stromfluß hervorge
rufene, auf Lichtstreuung beruhende Trübung erst bei höheren
Spannungen auftritt. In dieser Hinsicht sollen die Materia
lien vorzugsweise dahingehend ausgewählt werden, daß eine Trü
bung bei Feldstärke bis zu einem solchen Wert vermieden wird,
der wenigstens das 3fache der kritischen Spannung des Fried
rich-Übergangs (die kritische Feldstärke, unterhalb der keine
nennenswerte Ausrichtung der ausgerichteten Bereiche mit dem
Feld erfolgt) beträgt. Alternativ dazu kann die Trübung verhin
dert werden, indem ein elektrisches Wechselfeld vorgesehen wird,
das eine ausreichend hohe Frequenz aufweist. Im allgemeinen ist
eine Frequenz von wenigstens 60 Hz zweckmäßig, um eine Trübung
in nematischen Flüssigkristallmaterialien zu verhindern. Eine
zu hohe Frequenz soll jedoch vermieden werden, da die zur an
gestrebten Änderung der Brennweite erforderliche Feldstärke
direkt von der Frequenz abhängt.
Obwohl es zur Verhinderung einer Trübung in einem nematischen
Flüssigkristallmaterial nicht erforderlich ist, kann im Rahmen
der vorliegenden Erfindung auch ein magnetisches Wechselfeld
angewandt werden. Solch ein Feld kann zweckmäßig durch eine
Induktionsspule erzeugt werden, die rund um den Umfang des
Körpers aus Flüssigkristallmaterial angeordnet ist.
Um die Rückkehr der Ausrichtung der ausgerichteten Bereiche in die
anfänglich bevorzugte Richtung zu beschleunigen, kann es vorteil
haft sein, ein elektrisches oder magnetisches Hilfsfeld in x- und
y-Richtung vorzusehen. Sofern Flüssigkristallmaterialien verwendet
werden, die eine frequenzabhängige, reversible, dielektrische Ani
sotropie aufweisen, kann die Rückkehr der Ausrichtungen in die
anfänglich bevorzugten Richtungen "x" und "y" auch durch ein
Wechselfeld in z-Richtung verstärkt werden, das eine höhere
Frequenz als dasjenige Feld aufweist, das zur Neigung der Aus
richtungen auf die z-Richtung zu verwendet wird.
Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Erfindung sind nematische Flüssig
kristallmaterialien aus dem üblichen Gebrauch, wie sie bei
spielsweise in digital anzeigenden Armbanduhren und Rechner
anzeigen verwendet werden.
Obwohl sich in den meisten nematischen Flüssigkristallmaterialien
die ausgerichteten Bereiche parallel zu einem angelegten Feld aus
richten, können im Rahmen der vorliegenden Erfindung auch solche
nematischen Flüssigkristallmaterialien verwendet werden, deren
ausgerichtete Bereiche sich senkrecht zum angelegten Feld ein
stellen, wozu die ersichtlichen Änderungen an den dargestell
ten Einrichtungen vorgenommen werden müssen.
Bei der beschriebenen Ausführungsform wurde bei Raumtempe
ratur erfolgreich das nematische Flüssigkristallmaterial ver
wendet, das aus einem Gemisch aus 20% C4H9C6H4CO2C6H4CO2C6H4C4H9,
13% C4H9C6H4CO2C6H4CO2C6H4OCH3 und 67% C6H13OC6H4CO2C₆
H4C4H9
besteht, dessen Eigenschaften im Beitrag "Changes of Twist in
Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystals Layers by Frequency Switching
of Applied Electric Fields" von C. J. Gerritsma, J. J. M. J. deKlerk
und P. van Zanten in Solid State Communications, 17, Nr. 9,
S. 1077-1080, beschrieben ist. Die wirksame Apertur des zwi
schen den Glassubstraten befindlichen Körpers aus Flüssig
kristallmaterial betrugt angenähert 7 mm. Als Elektroden dien
ten angenähert 400 nm (4000 Å) dicke Indium-Zinnoxid-Schich
ten. Als Ausrichtungsschichten dienten angenähert 40 nm (400 Å)
dicke Siliciummonoxid-Schichten. Zur Aufbringung wurde das Si
liciummonoxid unter einem Winkel von 45° zu den Substraten und
unter einem kleinen, spitzen Winkel zu der flachen Platte ver
dampft. An die Elektroden wurde eine Wechselspannung von 60 Hz
angelegt. Durch Veränderung der Amplitude der Spannung von 0
auf 75 V wurde eine Änderung der Brennweite von 2 Dioptrien
erhalten. Nach Rückführung der Spannung auf 0 wurde wieder
die ursprüngliche Brennweite erhalten.
Claims (2)
1. Optische Fokussiereinrichtung, mit einem Körper aus doppel
brechendem, nematischem Flüssigkristallmaterial, Mitteln
(25, 28) zur Ausrichtung der ausgerichteten Bereiche des
Körpers in einer ersten Orientierung, Mitteln (30, 24) zum
Anlegen eines elektromagnetischen Feldes steuerbarer, ver
änderlicher Stärke an den Körper, um dessen ausgerichteten
Bereiche relativ zu der ersten Orientierung zu neigen und
dadurch einen veränderlichen Brechungsindex und mithin eine
veränderliche Brennweite zu erhalten,
gekennzeichnet durch
einen zweiten Körper aus doppelbrechendem, nematischen Flüs
sigkristallmaterial, und Mitteln (26, 29) zur Ausrichtung der
ausgerichteten Bereiche des zweiten Körpers in einer zweiten,
zu der ersten Orientierung senkrechten Orientierung, wobei
die Mittel (30, 24) zum Anlegen des Feldes derart ausgebil
det sind, daß das Feld an den ersten und den zweiten Körper
angelegt wird, um die ausgerichteten Bereiche des ersten
und des zweiten Körpers gegenüber der ersten und der
zweiten Orientierung zu neigen, wodurch die veränderli
che Brennweite von der Polarisation unabhängig ist.
2. Fokussiereinrichtung nach Anspruch 1,
dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
die Mittel zum Ausrichten der ausgerichteten Bereiche der
Körper Ausrichtschichten (28, 29) aufweisen, die auf ein
ander abgewandten Seiten eines transparenten Elements (27),
welches die Körper trennt, ausgebildet sind.
