Für das sichere Manövrieren von Kraftfahrzeugen ist es erforderlich, daß der Fahrer nicht nur einen freien Blick nach vorne hat, sondern auch die Möglichkeit erhält, die Straße links und rechts seines Fahrzeuges zu überwachen. Dies geschieht seit vielen Jahrzehnten mit Rückspiegeln, die als Innenspiegel durch das Rückfenster einen relativ kleinen Bereich der Straße hinter dem Fahrzeug zeigen und über außenliegende Seitenteile einen Einblick in sehr kleine Sektoren neben dem Fahrer und gegebenenfalls auch an der Beifahrerseite ermöglichen. So gehört es zu üblichem Fahrverhattten, daß der Fahrer eines Kraftfahrzeuges stark ermudende Bewegungen mit seinen Augen oder sogar dem ganzen Kopf durchführen muß. Sein Blick hat ständig zu wechseln zwischen einem vorderen Blick auf die Fahrbahn, einem nach oben gerichteten Blick zum mittleren Rückspiegel und einem seitlichen Blick zu dem oder den Außenspiegeln.
