Description

KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL

PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.

The process of indigo synthesis described in more detail below is based on the observation that phenylglycoll (phenylamidoacetic acid C 6 H ~ NH ~ CH ~ COOH), when melted with potash or soda, turns into a leuco compound, the alkaline solution of which is immediately indigo on contact with the oxygen in the air separates.

For execution by heating a mixture of ι part Phenylglykokoll, which is obtained by a known method from monochloroacetic acid and aniline 2 (Ber dd eh Ges X, p 2047th..) - dry parts caustic potash when fully possible Luftabschlufs, z. B. in a retort, for melting and increases the temperature to approx. 260 0 . The melt turns a deep orange-yellow with foaming and the development of steam. This point is reached more quickly if the temperature is increased further to 300 or 350 0 . The stated amount of potash does not need to be strictly adhered to, one can use a little less, but also 'more potash' and will arrive at the same result, only the yield of indigo is influenced by it. During the melting operation, samples are taken and placed in water. If the indigo excretion currently taking place when air is admitted does not increase any further, the melt is allowed to cool down and dissolved in water while an air stream is introduced at the same time.

The deposited indigo is filtered off, first with water, then with hydrochloric acid Water, and finally washed out with alcohol and dried.

Instead of the phenyl glycol, its salts and ethers can of course also be used because they melt with alkalis just like the phenylglycocoll itself pass into its alkali salt.

The caustic potash can be replaced by caustic soda with the same success, and instead the oxidation of the leuco compound contained in the melt by the oxygen in the air effect, you can also use oxidizing agents such as ferric chloride and so on; the air but works better and cheaper.
