  • this known cable leads to a number of disadvantages. Manufacturing is complicated and involves increased costs, because the recesses for accommodating the circuit units are subsequently incorporated into the insulation layer surrounding the conductors and have to be filled with a further insulation compound after the circuit units have been installed, it being questionable whether this would result in a complete, the penetration of moisture, in particular, can reliably prevent the bare electrically conductive parts from being covered. This problem is all the more serious since the construction of the cable sheath with wound strips and an outer plastic layer does not provide sufficient protection against moisture, other chemical effects and against electrical and magnetic interference, at least when the cable is laid directly in the ground. caused by lightning strikes in the vicinity of the cable.

  • the insulation layer into which the recesses for the circuit units are incorporated is produced independently of the part of the cable core which contains the wires and is assembled with this part after the recesses have been produced, great difficulties arise with regard to precise positioning of the recesses and thus the circuit units, because when the core is assembled, a pull in the longitudinal direction is inevitably exerted on the insulating layer provided with recesses, as a result of which the insulating layer, whose cross section is greatly reduced in the region of the recesses, stretches unevenly.
  • the invention has for its object to develop a cable of the type mentioned so that it has a simple, inexpensive structure and excellent protection of the integrated circuit units in the cable or their electronic and mechanical components against environmental influences of all kinds even under extreme conditions guaranteed, and to specify a method for producing such a cable.
  • the measures laid down in claim 1 are based on the recognition that a layer of high electrical conductivity built into the jacket, the cross section of which is sufficiently small to ensure at least a certain flexibility of the cable, does not in itself form a perfect Faraday cage which at high loads, for example when lightning strikes the ground on a cable laid in the ground, inside the cable could prevent the creation of dangerous longitudinal voltages, which could damage or destroy the installed circuit units.
  • the layer of high electrical conductivity as is required because of the manageability and the weight of the cable, has a thickness of only a few tenths of a millimeter, the eddy currents induced in this layer in the event of a lightning strike are in no way sufficient to dissipate the electrical charges applied to the layer To hold the outside of the electrically conductive layer and to prevent it from reaching the inside of this layer, where they then lead in the longitudinal direction of the cable to a voltage drop that increases proportionally to the distance from the point of impact, which far exceeds the permissible values. Basically nothing changes, even if you change the thickness of the electrically conductive layer enlarged to a few millimeters.
  • the weight and flexibility of the cable is considerably deteriorated, but the improved formation of eddy currents is largely compensated for by the fact that the lower electrical resistance of the conductive layer results in a considerably longer residence time for the lightning on the cable.

Such a layer thickness would, however, turn the "cable" into a rod or a tube, which could no longer be manufactured endlessly, wound onto a drum and pulled off it and laid with changing radii of curvature that could be chosen on site.
  • the layer arranged within the layer having high electrical conductivity has high magnetic permeability, which is to be understood in particular as a layer made of a material with ferromagnetic properties, the skin effect in is increased so much that even if the layer of high electrical conductivity is only a few tenths of a millimeter thick, dangerous lightning strains in the interior of the cable caused by charge displacement are prevented by a lightning strike.
  • the layer of high electrical conductivity takes over the current and prevents the layer of high magnetic permeability, the high skin effect of which is desired, from becoming saturated.

In addition, the layer of high magnetic permeability prevents the penetration of magnetic interference into the interior of the cable and thus an inductive coupling of electrical voltages into the conductor of the cable.

In addition, the outer layer (27) can have an electrical conductivity, the value of which lies between the conductivity values of the surrounding soil and the middle layer. In order to be able to manufacture such a cable as simply as possible, the circuit units are first electrically connected to the conductors and then embedded together with them in the inner protective layer (5) of the cable, e.g. by extrusion.

Description

The invention relates to a cable of the type mentioned in the preamble of claim 1 and a method for producing such a cable according to the preamble of claim 29.

In a known cable of this type, e.g. DE-PS 33 05 246 can be seen, the core of the cable is formed by an insulating layer with a flat rectangular cross-section, in the interior of which in the immediate vicinity of one flat side the wires or conductors of the cable are arranged so that they are approximately in extend in a plane parallel to one another in the longitudinal direction of the cable. From the other flat side of the cable core, recesses provided at intervals extend so far into the insulating layer that the conductors are bare on their bottom side. The recesses have dimensions which are considerably larger than the dimensions of the circuit units accommodated in them, so that the latter can be inserted into the recesses during the production of the cable and can be electrically conductively connected to the conductors. However, this has the consequence that after the circuit units have been installed, there are free spaces and cavities in the recesses, which must be filled with a permanently elastic, electrically insulating compound in order to protect them against contamination and moisture. The core of the known cable thus formed is surrounded by a multi-layer sheath, which e.g. a tape with water-swellable constituents, a layer formed by banding from an electrically conductive foil tape with high electrical conductivity and a layer made of a plastomeric or elastomeric plastic, which is intended to protect the inner parts of the cable against external chemical influences.

The construction of this known cable leads to a number of disadvantages. Furthermore, in the known cable, the positions or mutual spacings of the circuit units after the recesses have been produced in the insulating layer are finally determined and cannot be changed thereafter. Particularly in cases where the insulation layer into which the recesses for the circuit units are incorporated is produced independently of the part of the cable core which contains the wires and is assembled with this part after the recesses have been produced, great difficulties arise with regard to precise positioning of the recesses and thus the circuit units, because when the core is assembled, a pull in the longitudinal direction is inevitably exerted on the insulating layer provided with recesses, as a result of which the insulating layer, whose cross section is greatly reduced in the region of the recesses, stretches unevenly.

In contrast, the invention has for its object to develop a cable of the type mentioned so that it has a simple, inexpensive structure and excellent protection of the integrated circuit units in the cable or their electronic and mechanical components against environmental influences of all kinds even under extreme conditions guaranteed, and to specify a method for producing such a cable.

To achieve this object, the invention provides the features summarized in claims 1 and 29, respectively.

The measures laid down in claim 1 are based on the recognition that a layer of high electrical conductivity built into the jacket, the cross section of which is sufficiently small to ensure at least a certain flexibility of the cable, does not in itself form a perfect Faraday cage which at high loads, for example when lightning strikes the ground on a cable laid in the ground, inside the cable could prevent the creation of dangerous longitudinal voltages, which could damage or destroy the installed circuit units. If the layer of high electrical conductivity, as is required because of the manageability and the weight of the cable, has a thickness of only a few tenths of a millimeter, the eddy currents induced in this layer in the event of a lightning strike are in no way sufficient to dissipate the electrical charges applied to the layer To hold the outside of the electrically conductive layer and to prevent it from reaching the inside of this layer, where they then lead in the longitudinal direction of the cable to a voltage drop that increases proportionally to the distance from the point of impact, which far exceeds the permissible values. Basically nothing changes, even if you change the thickness of the electrically conductive layer enlarged to a few millimeters. As a result, the weight and flexibility of the cable is considerably deteriorated, but the improved formation of eddy currents is largely compensated for by the fact that the lower electrical resistance of the conductive layer results in a considerably longer residence time for the lightning on the cable. The layer with good electrical conductivity would therefore have to have a thickness of a few centimeters if it alone were to provide adequate protection of the interior of the cable against longitudinal stresses. Such a layer thickness would, however, turn the "cable" into a rod or a tube, which could no longer be manufactured endlessly, wound onto a drum and pulled off it and laid with changing radii of curvature that could be chosen on site.

This problem is found by the measures set out in claim 1, a surprising solution, because the layer arranged within the layer having high electrical conductivity has high magnetic permeability, which is to be understood in particular as a layer made of a material with ferromagnetic properties, the skin effect in is increased so much that even if the layer of high electrical conductivity is only a few tenths of a millimeter thick, dangerous lightning strains in the interior of the cable caused by charge displacement are prevented by a lightning strike. The layer of high electrical conductivity takes over the current and prevents the layer of high magnetic permeability, the high skin effect of which is desired, from becoming saturated. In order to keep the dwell time of the flash on the electrically highly conductive layer as short as possible, a layer thickness of 0.2 to 0.3 has now proven to be optimal, as can easily be achieved, for example, with the help of a correspondingly strong aluminum or copper foil . Since the mentioned effect can be achieved with a layer of high magnetic permeability, which is also only a tenth of a millimeter is thick, and for example consists of one or more correspondingly thin M u-metal foils, according to the invention there is an excellent shielding effect, without the cable being thereby particularly difficult or impaired in its flexibility. In addition, the layer of high magnetic permeability prevents the penetration of magnetic interference into the interior of the cable and thus an inductive coupling of electrical voltages into the conductor of the cable.

An additional improvement in the shielding effect of the two layers just described can be achieved in that the outer layer, which primarily serves to protect against chemical effects, is not formed by an insulating mass but by a material which has a high chemical resistance, such as polyethylene or a similar plastic, which also has a certain electrical conductivity, which is smaller than that of the extremely well-conductive middle layer of the jacket but greater than the electrical conductivity of the medium, e.g. the soil in which the cable is laid should be, or in the same order of magnitude as this conductivity called now. Through these measures it is possible that the large amounts of charge reaching the cable, for example in the event of a lightning strike, into the cable onto the electrically well-conducting layer of the jacket, because of the conductivity of the outer layer of the jacket, quickly return to the "earth" via the surrounding earth "flow back, which is to be seen as a removed cylinder wall lying coaxial to the cable. As a result of the conductivity of the outer cable layer, the dwell length of a lightning bolt on the cable is additionally shortened, and the size of the longitudinal voltages that build up is thus limited to even lower and certainly safe values.

If the outer layer of the jacket were to be made of an electrically well-insulating material, this layer would act like the dielectric of a capacitor, the coatings of which are formed on the one hand by the ground and on the other hand by the electrically well-conductive layer of the jacket. In order to prevent such a dielectric from striking through in the event of a lightning strike and thus being locally destroyed, which would lead to the abolition of its protective effect against chemical influences at this point, it would have to be formed with a very large wall thickness. However, this would in turn affect the weight and flexibility of the cable. Thus the fact that the outer layer of the sheath has a certain electrical conductivity not only contributes to an improved shielding effect against electrical interference but also to the achievement of good mechanical properties of the cable.

It should be expressly pointed out that the electrical conductivity of the outer layer of the sheath, which primarily protects against chemical effects, also brings about the advantages described above if the inner layer of the cable sheath, which has a high magnetic permeability, is omitted. This layer is not required, for example, if a cable according to the invention is laid in the sea and there are no elongated electrical conductors, for example telephone cables, in its immediate vicinity because, due to the high electrical conductivity of sea water in the event of a lightning strike, there is no one that may run parallel to the cable Can form current path or channel, from which an inductive interference coupling to the conductors of the cable is to be feared. In such a case, it may be sufficient to provide the cable with only a thin protective layer of high electrical conductivity and this layer, which is formed, for example, by an aluminum foil, to surround with another layer, which on the one hand offers protection against chemical effects and at the same time has the moderate electrical conductivity mentioned above. The combination of these two measures in connection with the electrically highly conductive surrounding medium is then sufficient to shorten the dwell length of the lightning on the cable to such an extent that no dangerous longitudinal stresses arise.

Since a cable according to the invention is generally used in such a way that its conductors are connected in an electrically conductive manner to at least one of its ends to a control and measuring center, which is used to control the circuit units in the cable and / or to record and evaluate the measured values supplied by the circuit contents serves, according to the invention it is further provided that at least all the circuit units of the control and measuring center which are in an electrically conductive connection with the cable are surrounded by an electrically well-conductive shield arrangement which is electrically conductively connected to the electrically well-conductive layer of the cable jacket and thus together with this forms a Faraday cage, which is completed by electrically conductive end terminations on any free cable ends. According to the invention, this Faraday cage is never broken through by electrical conductors. On the one hand, this means that any information input or output into or out of the cable that is not carried out by the control and measuring center is carried out, for example, with the aid of optical fibers or directly by optical means. The circuit units located in the cable are supplied with power from the control and measuring center either with the aid of batteries which are arranged within the Faraday cage, or with the aid of a power supply unit whose transformer is connected to its secondary winding and its primary winding outside of Faraday's cage. The advantages of completely enclosing the entire system in a Faraday cage can also be achieved if the cable does not have a layer of high magnetic permeability and / or if the outer sheath layer has no electrical conductivity, for example because the cable is laid in a cable duct where there is no threat of lightning.

By claim 29, a method for producing a cable according to the invention is specified, which is particularly simple because first of all only the circuit units must be mounted at the desired intervals on the conductors of the cable and connected to the required conductors in an electrically conductive manner then to be embedded together with the conductors into the inner protective layer of the cable core, preferably by extrusion. A preliminary treatment of the protective layer to produce any recesses and a subsequent filling of remaining voids and free spaces with an additional insulating compound is not necessary. Even in the event that the conductors have an insulating sheath from the outset, it is not absolutely necessary for the conductively connecting the circuit units to these conductors to partially strip the conductors. Instead, the electrically conductive connection can also be produced by a crimping process or the like, in which the insulating sheath of the relevant conductor is simply mechanically pierced.

Advantageous further developments of the manufacturing method according to the invention are set out in claims 30 to 36.

The invention is described below using an exemplary embodiment with reference to the drawing; in this shows:
  • 1 shows a longitudinal section through an inventive cable at a point where a circuit unit is located,
  • Fig. 2 is a section along the line II-II of Fig. 1, and
  • Fig. 3 shows a cable according to the invention, which is completely enclosed in a Faraday cage together with the circuit units of a control and measuring center.

As can be seen from FIG. 1, a cable 1 according to the invention consists of a core 2 and a sheath 3 surrounding the core 2, each of these two subunits being composed of several components.

Thus, the core 2 comprises an inner protective layer 5, which in the present case consists of an insulating mass, for example a rubber-elastic mixture, and in which both the wires 7 of the cable and the circuit units 10 which are spaced apart in the longitudinal direction of the cable 1 are completely embedded and thereby electrically insulated and protected against moisture and dirt. To achieve this, the circuit units 10 are preferably connected to at least some of the wires 7 in a mechanically and electrically conductive manner and are extruded into the inner protective layer 5 together with all the wires 7.

The core 2 further comprises a second protective layer 12 which e.g. consists of PVC and completely surrounds the inner protective layer 5 so that these two layers are freely movable against each other. This gives the cable 1 according to the invention a high degree of flexibility, so that it can be laid without wrinkles even with small radii of curvature and / or wound onto a storage drum.

As can be seen in particular from FIG. 2, between the inner protective layer 5 and the outer protective layer 12, strain relief elements 14 are provided, which may consist of Kevlar, steel or carbon fibers, for example.

Furthermore, FIG. 2 in particular shows that each of the cable cores 7 comprises a conductor 1G, which consists of several wires twisted together and is surrounded by an insulating sheath 17. The wires 7 are arranged in one plane so that the sheaths 17 of adjacent wires 7 touch each other along a longitudinally extending surface line and are firmly connected to one another in this contact area. Thus, the wires 7 form a flat band, which can be handled in a simple manner, even before they are installed in the cable 1 according to the invention. To attach the circuit units 10 before extrusion into the inner protective layer 5, in the present case a part of the insulating sheath 17 is removed from the wires 7 to which the respective circuit unit 10 is to be connected, so that the conductors 16 are exposed and with the connection pins 18 of the circuit unit concerned can be connected in an electrically conductive manner, for example by soldering or welding. 2 shows such a connection to the middle four wires 7 of the cable 1, while a pair of wires 7 each pass through the outside without being connected to the circuit unit 10 shown there. Instead of some of the electrically conductive wires 7 shown or in addition to these A cable according to the invention can also comprise one or more optical fibers which are used for optical information transmission and are wound with strain relief elements.

The circuit unit 10 shown in the figures comprises a substrate 20 which e.g. is designed as a printed circuit board or as a thick-film sub-substrate. On the one hand, it serves as a mechanical support for the components of the circuit unit 10, which are symbolically represented in FIG. 1 by a rectangle 21 or a potting compound drop 22. On the other hand, the substrate 20 also carries the interconnects which are not visible in FIGS. 1 and 2 and which are necessary for connecting the components arranged on the substrate 20 to one another and to the connecting legs 18.

As can be seen in particular from FIG. 1, the connecting leg straps 18 have a section 24 which is bent away convexly from the longitudinal direction of the cable 1 and from the wires 7 and extends to just below the surface of the inner protective layer 5 and has sharp side edges. In this way, an insulation weak point and high field strengths are created between the section 24 and the metallic conductors 28, 29 embedded in the jacket 3 of the cable 1, so that the conductors 16 can be directly discharged, if, in spite of that, more precisely below described protective measures should build up a disturbing electrical potential inside the cable jacket 3. In addition, the section 24 of the connecting legs 18 is used for strain relief if there should be a relative movement between the substrate 20 and the cable wires 7.

As the figures clearly show, the cable wires 7 are in particular with the bare spots of their conductors 16 and the circuit units 10 with their components 21, 22 and their connecting legs 18 are completely embedded in the innermost protective layer 5 of the cable core 2 and thus in any case sufficient against dirt and in all those applications in which no extremely high demands are made, also sufficient against moisture and other chemical influences are protected. It is not absolutely necessary that the cable wires 7 have their own insulating sheath 17. Instead, the circuit units 10 could also be mounted on initially uninsulated conductors 16, which are kept at a distance from one another by suitable measures, and then embedded together with them in the innermost protective layer 5 during the manufacture of the cable. It is also not absolutely necessary that the cable wires 7 are arranged in one plane in the manner shown. Rather, they could also, viewed in the cross section of FIG. 2, be arranged on one or more concentric circles around a common center point, so that the end result is a round cable. Furthermore, it is possible to twist the cable wires 7 together, an alternating stroke preferably being used in order to achieve additional protection against electromagnetic interference coupled in from the outside. In the latter two cases, preferably no rigid circuit boards or ceramic plates are used as substrates for the circuit units 10, but rather, for example, Kaptonolie pieces, which carry the electrical components and the conductor tracks required for their connection and are placed around the wire bundle from the outside. The electrically conductive connection between the leads of the circuit units 10 and the conductors 16 of the cable wires 7 can also be by crimping or another Crimping process take place, the insulating sheath 17 of the cable wires 7 being mechanically pierced without a stripping process being necessary beforehand. Furthermore, it is not necessary for the protective layer 5 to consist of an insulator with extremely low electrical conductivity. Rather, when assembling the cable before embedding on the wires 7 and the circuit units 1 0, a thin film made of an insulating material, for example Teflon, can be applied and then a mass can be used to form the protective layer 5, which has an electrical conductivity, whose value lies between the conductivity values of insulators on the one hand and metallic conductors on the other. In conjunction with the protective measures to be described in the following, this can provide increased security against electromagnetic interference coming from outside.

Wie die Fig. 1 und 2 zeigen, ist der Kabelkern 2 von einem Mantel 3 umgeben, der aus einer metallischen Schirmanordnung 26 gegen elektromagnetische Störungen und einer äußeren Schicht 27 besteht, die die Schirmanordnung 26 gegen chemische Einwirkungen schützt.1 and 2 show, the cable core 2 is surrounded by a sheath 3, which consists of a metallic shield arrangement 26 against electromagnetic interference and an outer layer 27, which protects the shield arrangement 26 against chemical effects.

For moderate requirements, the screen arrangement 26 can be used. consist of a braid of copper-plated iron, i.e. in other words, two components, one of which is a metal of high magnetic permeability and the other of which is a metal of high electrical conductivity. In order to ensure adequate protection, such a screen braid must have a comparatively large thickness, which leads to an increased weight of the cable. Furthermore, it is difficult to build up a moisture barrier in the jacket with such a braid. Furthermore, the screen factor is relatively low.

The screen arrangement 26 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, which consists of an inner layer 28 and a second layer 29, is therefore particularly preferred. The inner layer 28 is formed by a foil of a metal with high magnetic permeability, for example a mu-metal foil, while the second layer 29, which forms the middle layer of the jacket 3, is made of a foil of a metal of high electrical conductivity, for example one Aluminum or copper foil is formed.

The inner layer 28 of the sheath 3 formed by the mu-metal foil lies directly on the outside of the second protective layer 12 of the core 2, but is displaceable against this second protective layer 12, which increases the flexibility of the cable 1 and also wrinkles is avoided if the cable is bent with small radii of curvature. The mu-metal foil 28 is placed around the cable core 2 in such a way that its longitudinal edges run parallel to the longitudinal direction of the cable 1 and overlap one another in the overlap region 30. The mu-metal foil 28 can be coated with an electrically conductive copolymer, which is used to weld the overlapping longitudinal edges. The aluminum or copper foil 29, which is preferably coated with a copolymeric, electrically conductive plastic, then lies directly on the mu-metal foil 28 and in electrical contact with it. The longitudinal edges of this aluminum or copper foil likewise run parallel to the longitudinal direction of the cable 1 and overlap one another in the overlap region 31, where they are welded to one another with the aid of the copolymer coating in such a way that the aluminum or copper foil 29 has an absolutely water- and forms a vapor-tight sheathing for all internal parts of the cable. In order to protect the copper or aluminum foil 29 against external chemical influences, the jacket 3 has an outer layer 27, which is preferably made of polyethylene or a similar plastic stands and by appropriate admixture of an electrically conductive substance, such as carbon black or graphite, has an electrical conductivity that is preferably greater than / equal to the electrical conductivity of the soil in which the cable is to be laid, and which is smaller than the electrical conductivity of the the middle layer 29 forming aluminum or copper foil. This film is also welded to the outer layer 27 of the jacket 3 with the aid of its copolymer coating.

The cable thus formed can then be surrounded with rodent protection, which is not shown in the figures. Likewise, a lead sheath (not shown in the figures) can be provided within the outer layer 27 in order to protect the interior of the cable against radioactive radiation.

In the construction of the cable sheath 3 just described, the inner layer 28 made of a mu-metal folic primarily assumes protection against magnetic fields coming from outside, while the middle layer 29 formed by a copper or aluminum foil forms a Faraday's cage that protects against electric fields. It is surprising that the protective effect of the middle layer 29 is increased to a very considerable extent by the presence of the inner mu-metal foil 28, so that, despite the small thickness of the two foils, the penetration of longitudinal stresses into the cable interior is also avoided. when a lightning strikes the cable. In such a case, since the middle layer 29 of the cable 1 "carries away" the "visible mass" for the lightning from afar or the further vicinity of the impact point in its immediate vicinity, the lightning would then, if the outer layer 27 was not electrically conductive material would consist of the soil on the one hand and the middle Layer 29, on the other hand, break through the capacitor formed and thereby damage or destroy the outer layer 27 at least locally to such an extent that it could no longer exert its protective action against chemical effects at this point. Because the outer layer 27 has a conductivity between the conductivity of the ground and the conductivity of the middle layer 29, the formation of such a capacitor is avoided and the electrical charge introduced into the ground by the lightning can be transmitted to the middle layer 29 of the ground without being destroyed Cable sheath 3 arrive and flow continuously through this layer in the longitudinal direction to the "mass". The increased conductivity of the outer layer 27 makes it easier for the electrical charges located on the middle layer 29 to flow back over the ground to the "ground".

In Fig. 3, the wires 7 of a cable 1 according to the invention, of which only the cable core 2 and the layer 29 of the sheath having a high electrical conductivity are reproduced, at one end of the cable connected to a control and measuring center 35, which is shown by a dashed line Line is indicated. This control and measuring center comprises a series of electronic circuits, which are symbolized by the block 36 and both for controlling the circuit units located in the cable 1 as well as for receiving, evaluating and possibly for displaying the information provided by these circuit units as well as for monitoring and Serve regulation of the supply voltage, which is supplied via two of the wires 7 to the circuit units located in the cable 1 (not shown here). To this end are the electronic circuits 36 with the cable wires 7 in an electrically conductive connection.

Furthermore, the control and measuring center 35 comprises a power supply unit 39 which supplies the electrical energy required for operation both for the electronic circuits 36 and for the circuit units located in the cable 1.

In principle, this electrical energy could be taken from batteries, but a transformer 40 is preferably provided, of which only the primary winding 42 and the secondary winding 41 are shown symbolically. In addition, the control and measuring center 35 comprises an electrically conductive shield arrangement 44, which encloses all parts of the control and measuring center 35 which are in electrically conductive connection with the cable 1, that is to say in particular the electronic circuits 36 and the power supply unit 39 and against protects electrical interference coming from outside. This shield arrangement 44 is electrically conductively connected to the electrically highly conductive layer 29 of the cable, which has an electrically conductive end termination 45 at the blunt cable end shown. Furthermore, a connection unit 50 is shown in FIG. 3 between two "interruptions" of the cable 1, which are only intended to symbolize the great length of the cable, into each of which a cable section enters from two sets. The connection unit 50 serves to accommodate circuit units 51 which cannot or should not be integrated directly into the cable 1, but are at least in an electrically conductive connection with some of the cable wires 7 and, for example, are also supplied with the electrical energy required for their operation . To protect these circuit units 51, the connection unit 50 has an electrically highly conductive shield arrangement 52 which, with the exception of the entry and exit Openings for the cable 1 completely encloses the circuit units 51 and are in electrically conductive contact with the electrically well-conductive layers 29 of the cable sections to which the connecting unit 50 is connected, so that they form part of the Faraday cage, which forms the entire System encloses. Although FIG. 3 shows only a single connection unit 50 that connects two cable sections to one another, a large number of such connection units 50 can be provided, which can also connect more than two cable sections to one another as required.

It is essential that the shield arrangements 44 and 52, the electrically highly conductive layers 29 and the end seal (s) 45 form a completely closed Faraday cage, which is never broken by electrical conductors. Since the primary winding 42 of the transformer 40 is to be connected to a power supply network in some way, it is arranged outside the shield arrangement 44, while the secondary winding 41 is located within the Faraday cage. The energy required to power the electronic circuits 36 and the circuit units 10 in the cable 1 is thus fed into the Faraday cage in a purely magnetic way from the outside.

If it is necessary to feed in or out information between the ends of the cable through the Faraday cage, this is done exclusively with the aid of non-conductors, for example with the aid of optical fibers, along which no electrical charges are brought into the interior of the cage can be. Data generated by the electronic circuits 36 can be displayed within the Faraday cage, with the reading of the display units optically through an opening of the cage Ways. If this data is to be transmitted to other units, it is also output from the control and measurement center optically, as is symbolized by the optical fiber 53 ending in an arrowhead.
