Description

The present invention relates to a road safety installation for the emission of audible messages.

When driving a motor vehicle, the driver of the vehicle is guided in his driving by the road signs which line the road. The driver is therefore required to pay close attention to the observation of traffic signs and their meanings, in order to have a safe drive and thus avoid the risk of accident as much as possible. The driver's gaze should also be directed from time to time on the speedometer, so as not to exceed the authorized speed limits, and on the mirrors to monitor traffic behind his vehicle. Owing to these various obligations, it is obvious that the various danger, stop and priority signs, for example, are often overlooked for various reasons. It therefore appears of the utmost importance, to increase road safety, to warn the driver of a motor vehicle of a situation or danger already materialized by the existence of a fixed road sign.

The installation according to the invention was designed for this purpose and it makes it possible to ensure optimal information for a driver by sound, thanks to a particularly simple combination of means.

To this end, this road safety installation for emitting sound messages is characterized in that it comprises, for each type of traffic sign fixed along a roadway, a device emitting a coded infrared radiation signal corresponding to the type of traffic sign with which it is associated and, on each vehicle traveling on the road, a device receiving the coded infrared radiation signal from the fixed emitting device and transforming it into a clear audio message sent to the driver of the vehicle, the emitting device comprises a current source supplying, via an encoder an emitter of infrared radiation so that the device emits, in the direction of vehicles arriving on the roadway, the coded infrared signal, and a sound level detector or sound sensor which controls a normally open and closed switch, to activate the transmitting device, when the sound sensor perceives the noise emitted by the engine of a vehicle, and the receiving device comprises an infrared radiation sensor which is mounted on the vehicle, at the front thereof, inside or outside, this sensor being connected, to a decoder whose output is connected to a appropriate audio message selector.

An embodiment of the present invention will be described below, by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the appended drawing in which:
  • FIG. 1 is a block diagram of an emission road safety installation according to the invention.
  • FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a coded infrared radiation emitter used in the installation according to the invention.
  • Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken along line III-III of Figure 2.

The installation according to the invention which is represented schematically as a whole in FIG. 1, comprises, for each type of traffic sign fixed along a roadway, a device 1 emitting an infrared radiation signal coded i corresponding to the type of the traffic sign P with which it is associated and, on each vehicle 2 traveling on the roadway, a device 3 receiving the coded infrared radiation coming from the fixed emitting device 1 and transforming it into a clear audio message sent to the driver of the vehicle. For example, in the case shown by way of example in FIG. 1, the emitting device 1 is associated with a "STOP" panel and the signal of the coded infrared radiation, once decoded in the receiving device 3, results in the emission of a clear audio message which can be as follows "stopping is compulsory. In case of non-compliance you risk a fine and the withdrawal of the driving license".

The emitting device 1 comprises an autonomous current source 4, such as a battery or a solar cell, or else it can still be connected to the power supply sector if the position of the panel is suitable. This current source 4 supplies, via an encoder 5, an infrared radiation emitter 6. The encoder 5 ensures the modulation of the infrared signal emitted by the emitter 6, so that the device 1 emits, in the direction vehicles arriving on the road, the coded infrared signal i which corresponds only to the type of panel P with which the device 1 is associated.

The transmitting device 1 further comprises a sound level detector or sound sensor 7 which controls a switch 7a normally open and is closed to turn on the transmitting device 1, when the sound sensor 7 receives the noise emitted by the engine 8 of a vehicle 2.

The receiving device 3 comprises an infrared radiation sensor 9 which is mounted on the vehicle, at the front thereof, inside or outside, so as to obtain the best possible reception. It can be preceded by a magnifying glass itself preceded by a red plastic or mineral filter. The infrared radiation sensor 9 is electrically supplied, like the other components of the receiving device 1, by a current source 10 and it is connected, through a filtering circuit 11, to a decoder 12 whose output is connected to a selector 13 of the appropriate audio message. This message selector 13 can be constituted by a cassette recorder or hard disk, LASER voice synthesizer disk on which several sound messages are recorded beforehand corresponding respectively to the different types of traffic signs likely to be encountered during vehicle traffic, each selected message being emitted by a loudspeaker 14.

Consequently, when a vehicle approaches at a predetermined distance from a traffic sign P equipped with a transmitter device 1, the noise of the vehicle's engine 8 cule is detected by the sound sensor 7 so that the switch 7a closes so as to thereby cause the supply of the infrared radiation emitter 6, via the encoder 5. The emitter 6 then transmits the coded infrared signal i which is picked up on the vehicle by the sensor 9. The signal thus captured is transmitted, after filtering 11, to the decoder 12 which identifies the nature of the coded infrared signal i and which consequently controls the message selector 13 so that the latter emits, via the loudspeaker 14, the sound message corresponding to the panel P, in this case the signal "STOP". The driver is then informed of the proximity of such a sign and can react much more easily, even if his attention is then distracted.

As can best be seen in FIGS. 2 and 3, the emitting device 1 comprises a metal or plastic housing 15, this housing being fixed for example to the post supporting the sign P. The housing 15 contains all the elements of the transmitting device and it has a side door 16 allowing access to these elements for their maintenance or their replacement. A glass plate 17 can possibly be provided, in one of the judiciously exposed walls, to allow the lighting of a solar cell located inside and used as a current generator. The front wall 15a of the housing 15 is turned in the direction of the vehicles arriving at the place where the panel P is located and in this front wall 15a are provided openings in which are mounted grids 18 lined with windows 19 and provided with seals for avoid the penetration of water inside the housing 15. The pairs of grid 18 and glass 19 are placed respectively in an upper opening of the front wall 15a, in front of the infrared radiation emitter 6, and in an opening bottom of this wall, in front of the sound sensor 7. Edges 21, 22 are provided respectively along the upper edge of the anterior wall 15a and in particular upper and lower openings. The upper edge 21 is curved upwards while the lower rim 22 is curved downwards, starting from the front wall 15a. The edges 21 and 22 prevent dirt from clogging the windows 19.

As shown diagrammatically in FIG. 3, the infrared radiation emitter 6 can advantageously be mounted on a device 25 making it possible to adjust the direction of the infrared radiation emitted.

The installation according to the invention can also comprise, on each vehicle 2, in addition to the receiving device 3 comprising the sensor 9 of coded infrared radiation mounted at the front, a transmitter of coded infrared radiation 26 placed inside the vehicle on the rear windscreen or outside on the rear part of the vehicle. This transmitter 26 which is thus turned towards the following vehicles, can then emit an infrared signal coded i 1 which, after having been picked up by the detector device 3 of a following vehicle 2, causes, in this vehicle, the delivery of a message warning sound for the driver, indicating for example that he is following too closely the previous vehicle and that he risks an accident.

According to another alternative embodiment, the installation may comprise, in addition to the infrared radiation emitter 6 automatically put into service when approaching a vehicle, a second infrared radiation emitter 27 emitting a second coded infrared signal i 2 in an emergency. In such a case, for example when traffic conditions require the drivers of the vehicles to be notified, the start-up of the second transmitter 27 is then controlled manually, or by telephone, or other means as required.

One can also plan to use at will a single infrared emitter to emit either the normal signal i associated with the panel P, or the special coded signal i2 to indicate an emergency situation.
