Description

The present invention relates to a device for assisting in the acquisition of a target by an operator in a weapon system.

A weapon system is composed in a known manner of a target detection and location unit, such as a radar, and of firing units, capable of firing in the direction of targets thus located.

The present invention relates more particularly to a short-range weapon system in which the firing operations are carried out manually by an operator, which supposes that prior to any firing operation, the operator acquires the target in its sight, and either therefore brought to look in the direction of this one. For this, one might think a priori that the operator's own means of perception are sufficient; in reality such a method would be ineffective, in particular in the presence of fast targets flying at low altitude and revealing themselves late (for example due to the interposition of natural obstacles such as trees or hills).

A more effective solution consists in transmitting information from the detection and localization system, which also acquires the target, towards the operator, in order to indicate to the latter, in order to anticipate his reaction, in particular the nature of the target, its source, its approach speed; but the problem then lies in the choice of the communication interface between the detection and localization system and the operator. Currently, this is done in the form of an alert, usually given by voice. This method is however very restrictive for the operator who, because of the speed of certain targets and the implementation times of this method, often has very little time to react.

In this connection, it is known from French patent FR-A-2 078 693, for a target already acquired by an operator, to transmit to the latter vocal orders for shooting correction developed from the information provided on the target by a detection and localization system. Such an installation therefore suffers from the drawbacks indicated above.

Furthermore, US Pat. No. 2,069,208 describes an arrangement for reinforcing the biaural effect in a system which makes it possible to appreciate the direction of a target by listening to the real noises which it emits.

The subject of the present invention is another alert method which is both less restrictive for the operator from a physiological point of view, and more effective from an operational point of view.

According to the invention, there is provided a device for assisting in the acquisition of target by an operator, in a weapon system comprising a target detection and location system delivering target location information, as defined in the revendications.

  • la figure 1 est un schéma de principe d'un dispositif d'aide à l'acquisition de cible suivant l'invention ;
Other objects and characteristics of the present invention will appear more clearly on reading the following description of an exemplary embodiment, made in relation to the appended drawings in which:
  • Figure 1 is a block diagram of a device for assisting in target acquisition according to the invention;
  • Figure 2 is a block diagram of a stereophonic signal synthesizer used in a device for assisting in target acquisition according to the invention.

The device 1 for assisting in the acquisition of a target by an operator in a weapon system provides an interface between the detection and localization system 2 of the weapon system and n operators fitted with stereophonic headsets such as 3 n ( only one of them having been represented for clarity). This device comprises, associated with each of the n helmets 3 n , a processor 4 n , called the helmet processor, capable of carrying out the synthesis of stereophonic signals, under the control of signals received from a computer 5 with which it communicates.

Ce calculateur 5 reçoit lui-même du système de détection et de localisation 2, pour chacune des cibles détectées par ce système (supposé multicibles) la nature (N), la direction (D₁), la distance (d) et la vitesse d'approche (V) de celle-ci.This computer 5 itself receives from the detection and localization system 2, for each of the targets detected by this system (assumed to be multi-target) the nature (N), the direction (D₁), the distance (d) and the approach speed (V) thereof.

From this information, called target location information, the computer 5 prepares information for controlling the synthesis of stereophonic sound signals which, transmitted to the headphones of the headsets provided with the n operators, give them the subjective feeling of a direction of attack corresponding to the real direction in which the target assigned to them is situated, in relation to them.

The direction information is therefore converted by the computer 5 into phase information (φ), the distance information into intensity information (I), and the speed information (V) into information of frequency (f).

Prior to its conversion into phase information, the target direction information (D₁) is combined with the direction information (D₂) in which the operator is looking, in order to obtain the stereophonic direction of the target relative to the operator, taking into account the tilt of his head.

This direction information (D₂) in which the operator looks can be delivered by a gyrometric platform, but also, taking into account the very relative precision which is required, by a magnetic system adjusted to the local declination; it is then transmitted from the headset processor 4 to the computer 5. Once produced by the computer 5, the information for controlling the synthesis of stereophonic signals is stored in n registers 6 n , for multiplexed transmission to the n processors 4 n .

As shown in FIG. 2, each headset processor contains, recorded in ROM 7, the binary signals corresponding to the different natures of targets.

The suitable memory, selected using the target nature information (N), is read at a rate corresponding to the frequency developed by the computer 5, and the signal obtained, after digital / analog conversion in a converter 8 is applied to the input of two stereophonic amplifiers 9 and 10 which provide the gains and phase shifts corresponding to the intensity and phase information transmitted by the computer 5. The operator thus hears a sound signal which gives him the subjective impression of the direction and the approach of the target and informs him about his nature.

The information for controlling the synthesis of stereophonic signals is updated by the computer 5 as a function of the movements of the head of the operator and of the extrapolated movement of the target. The subjective direction of the noise thus always corresponds to the effective direction of the latter.

The operator is thus able to orient himself very quickly in the direction of the target assigned to him and to acquire it.
