Definitions
- the invention relates to a magnetic ink concentrate, consisting essentially of a dispersion of superparamagnetic solid particles in water or alcohol in the presence of a dispersing substance, and a process for its preparation.
- extremely fine-particle, non-agglomerating pigments are required, which are expediently obtained by precipitation reactions.
- Distinctive magnetic properties are also essential, such as high saturation magnetization and high susceptibility of the finished ink with low viscosity.
- the ink must be stable to sedimentation.
- DE-A 26 23 508 describes magnetic inks based on precipitating magnetite and surface-active substances, such as aliphatic carboxylic acids, which require the addition of a number of other components to suppress the disruptive foaming action and to disperse them in water.
- the disadvantage here is that the unsaturated carboxylic acids are sensitive to oxidation and lead to an unpleasant odor during manufacture and use.
- the specified method requires washing processes in which these unpleasant smelling substances also get into the wastewater. Problems in a similar manner also occurred with a method according to DE-A 28 08 144.
- no sulfates may be present in the precipitation of the magnetic iron oxides, since these impair the adhesion of the surface-active substances to the pigment.
- the iron (II) sulfate obtained as a by-product in titanium dioxide production cannot be used as a cheap raw material base.
- the dispersing aids used in this process also have the effect that the ink on paper does not produce a clear typeface and also has too high a viscosity.
- the object was therefore to provide a sedimentation-stable, aqueous dispersion of magnetic particles which are suitable for use in writing implements, such as Inkjet printers which are based on the action of capillary forces are suitable to be provided, which do not have the disadvantages mentioned above and which are distinguished by optimal magnetic properties with low viscosity at the same time.
- a magnetic ink concentrate consisting essentially of a dispersion of superparamagnetic solid particles in water or alcohol in the presence of dispersing substances, if the dispersing substance is selected from at least one polyelectrolyte with a molecular weight between 1000 and 25000 the group consists of polyacrylate, acrylic acid / acrylamide copolymers and polyvinylphosphonic acid as well as the alkali salts of these compounds, with the proviso that the ink concentrate has a viscosity, measured at 22 ° C, of less than 10 mPa ⁇ s (10cP) and a saturation magnetization of> 32 mT has.
- the superparamagnetic solid particles incorporated in the ink concentrate according to the invention are advantageously those which have a BET specific surface area of 60 to 130 m 2 / g, preferably 80 to 110 m 2 / g.
- the specific surface was determined in accordance with DIN 66 132 using a Ströhlein Areameter from Ströhlein, Düsseldorf, using the single point difference method according to Haul and Dümbgen.
- Known per se such as water or alcohols, are used as the carrier medium for the ink concentrates according to the invention.
- Ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol or glycerin may be mentioned as examples of alcohols, mixtures of these alcohols with water also being included.
- the polyelectrolytes with a molecular weight between 1000 and 25000, in particular between 1500 and 20,000 and preferably around 4000, which characterize the ink concentrates according to the invention, are polyacrylic acid, acrylic acid / acrylamide copolymers and polyvinylphosphonic acid.
- the added amount of these substances is measured according to the specific surface area of the superparamagnetic particles and amounts to at least 0.7 mg per m2 BET surface area, quantities between 1.5 and 5 mg / m2 being found to be particularly advantageous.
- the magnetic ink concentrates according to the invention can also contain additives for regulating the flow behavior, e.g. Contain alkylphenolates.
- additives for regulating the flow behavior e.g. Contain alkylphenolates.
- high boilers such as diethylene glycol, ethylene glycol, glycerol and polyethylene glycol in minor amounts can also be used to achieve favorable flow and drying properties.
- dyes By adding dyes, the color depth of the ink concentrates can be varied, provided that a certain reduction in the saturation magnetization is not a problem.
- These magnetic inks according to the invention can be produced in a simple manner.
- a mixture of water or alcohol and the polyelectrolyte and / or its alkali salt in the form of a 10 to 90% strength by weight solution is stirred with the filter cake of the superparamagnetic material, which is usually still moist, and the suspension is then under the effect of high shear forces by half to Dispersed for 2 hours.
- the temperature can rise up to 70 ° C.
- the order of adding the components is arbitrary and does not affect the properties of the resulting ink concentrate.
- the mixture is then centrifuged at 200 to 2000 g for 10 minutes to 2 hours and the small proportion of sedimented particles is separated off.
- the resulting product corresponds in structure and properties to the magnetic ink concentrate according to the invention.
- the ink concentrate according to the invention is significantly improved compared to those according to the prior art. For example, it is particularly stable to sedimentation, ie after one week of storage, the concentration of the dye at the bottom increases, for example 10 cm high liquid column by less than 3% compared to the mean concentration.
- Another advantageous property is the very high saturation magnetization of> 32 mT, despite the thin liquid of the ink concentrate according to the invention of ⁇ 10 cP.
- the ink concentrate is characterized by the fact that it neither foams during handling nor forms clumps at any time.
- Another advantage that is particularly noticeable when using the ink concentrate is that it is odorless. It is therefore ideally suited as a magnetic ink for writing implements such as inkjet printers. The resulting typeface is sharp, non-flowing and smudge-proof.
- the magnetic ink concentrate according to the invention can also be used for information storage by means of a magnetic bar code, since it made the high magnetic susceptibility particularly suitable for this.
- a mixture of 54 g of the sodium salt of a polyacrylic acid with a molecular weight of 4000 and a degree of neutralization of 85% and 66 ml of water (Sokolan CP 10 from BASF) are mixed with the moist filter cake of the manganese-zinc ferrite prepared according to Example 1 (dry weight 275 g) stirred, resulting in a thin suspension.
- This suspension is then dispersed for one hour under the action of high shear forces using an Ultra Turrax dispersing device.
- the mixture is then centrifuged at 1000 g for one hour, a small part of slightly sedimenting particles being separated off.
- a sedimentation-stable suspension remains, which is in an inkjet printer can be used and has the following properties: saturation magnetization 33.5 mT; Sediment formation on the bottom of a 10 cm high suspension filling after one week: ⁇ 2%; Viscosity (measured with a Carrimed CS 100 shear stress controlled rheometer) 5 cSt, corresponding to 7.2 cP.
- a manganese-zinc ferrite is produced as described in Example 1, but 262.5 g of Fe2SO4 ⁇ 7H2O are used instead of the iron (II) chloride. 27.5 g of this ferrite are dispersed as a wet filter cake with 5.5 g of the polyacrylic acid according to Example 2 in 6.7 g of water. Further processing is carried out as described in Example 2.
- the resulting ink concentrate has a sediment formation of ⁇ 2%, a saturation magnetization of 40 mT and a viscosity of 9 cP.
- Example 4 The procedure is as described in Example 4, but a copolymer of acrylic acid and acrylamide in a ratio of 90:10 with a K value of 17.3 is used as the dispersant. After one week of storage, no sediment formation can be measured.
- Example 4 The procedure is as described in Example 4, but a polyvinylphosphonic acid with an average molecular weight of 5000 is used as the dispersant. After one week of storage, no sediment formation can be measured.
- Example 1 To produce a magnetic ink in alcohol, the washed, moist filter cake according to Example 1, which consists of 138 g ferrite and 148 g water, is mixed with 240 g ethylene glycol. The water is drawn off at 100 ° C. under reduced pressure. A suspension is formed which contains only 10% water and is dispersed after the addition of 19 g of polyacrylic acid / polyacrylate. This suspension is stable to sedimentation and has a saturation magnetization of 35.3 mT. It is suitable as a magnetic ink.
- a homogeneous mixture is only obtained after adding a mixture of 3 parts glycerol, 4 parts polyethylene glycol (molecular weight approx. 200) and 5 parts alkylphenolate (with a side chain composed of 6 molecules ethylene oxide) per 88 parts suspension.
- This magnetic liquid has a viscosity of 24 cP at a saturation magnetization of 15.5 mT. In the case of attempts at writing, the writing on the paper becomes blurred in such a way that the liquid is not suitable for fine writing patterns.
- Example 2 a suspension of the ferrite is dispersed with polyacrylate and refined by centrifugation.
- the pH is neutral to slightly alkaline. With a saturation magnetization of 17 mT, the viscosity is 8.8 cP.
- the resulting magnetic ink is characterized by its particularly dark color when printed with an inkjet printer.
