Abstract

The invention relates to a sealing construction for a pipe (20), such as a flue gas discharge pipe or a ventilation pipe, through a roof.
According to the invention the sealing construction is arranged on the inside of the roof and comprises a frame portion (31,32) and a flexible sealing ring portion (33).
The invention provides in this way a sealing on the inside of the roof which prevents condensation in the roof construction, aesthetically speaking looks good and prevents loss of energy.

Description

  • The invention relates to a sealing construction for a pipe, such as a flue gas discharge pipe or a ventilation pipe, through a roof.
  • When a pipe of for instance a flue gas discharge or a cooker hood has to be led to the outside through a roof, a hole is made in the roof, through which the pipe extends to the outside. In an inclined roof the hole has to be oval.
  • A drawback here is that the oval hole in the roof is often made larger than the diameter of the pipe in order to lead the pipe through easily and to be able to place the pipe vertically. In the remaining space between the pipe and the roof construction the (warmer) air from the space under the roof will then be led to the outside as a result of a chimney effect. Water vapour in the air can then condensate against the (colder) outer part of the roof construction, and against a possible shielding and/or a possible foil at the outside of the roof construction, which foil is vapour permeable. If the condensation moisture subsequently enters the roof construction, rot and the like may occur. At outside temperatures below zero, ice accumulation will occur, as a result of which at rise of the temperature a large quantity of moisture runs into the roof construction.
  • To remove this drawback it is known to attach a roof boarding plate against the inside of the roof to close off the space between the pipe and the roof construction. In this way however a sufficient sealing is not obtained, because the known roof boarding plate consists of two parts, which each have been provided with a slot with a rounded off end. The two parts of the roof boarding plate are slid around the pipe from both sides, but do not completely seal against the pipe, particularly not at the transition of the two parts of the roof boarding plate. Furthermore it is known to fill the space between the pipe and the roof construction with polyurethane foam. However this does not give a complete sealing, because the polyurethane foam shrinks afterwards, as a result of which an opening occurs again. Polyurethane foam is also hygroscopic, which with the use in roofs is not desirable. It is not a durable solution either, because this foam decays in the course of time. Moreover this solution is not attractive aesthetically speaking.
  • It is an object of the invention to provide an improved sealing for the space between a pipe and the roof construction through which the pipe extends.
  • It is another object of the invention to provide an aesthetic sealing for the space between a pipe and the roof construction through which the pipe extends.
  • One or more of these objects are achieved according to the invention with a sealing construction for a pipe, such as a flue gas discharge pipe, through a roof, in which the sealing construction is arranged on the inside of the roof and comprises a frame portion and a first flexible sealing ring portion around the pipe.
  • In this way a sealing construction is provided which can easily be arranged on the inside of the roof, which can be used for various angles of inclination of the roof, because the ring portion accommodates the skewness, and which gives an aesthetic look. The sealing construction also ensures than no warm air leaves the house along the pipe, as a result of which loss of energy is prevented.
  • According to a preferred embodiment the frame portion comprises an attachment portion which is attached to the inside of the roof, and a transitional portion which is connected to the attachment portion, with an opening which surrounds the pipe at a distance, in which the flexible sealing ring portion is arranged in the opening of the transitional portion. In this way an attachment portion is provided meant for attachment against the roof, and a transitional portion which can offer the sealing construction an aesthetic look and which holds the ring.
  • Preferably the transitional portion substantially has the shape of a hood and more preferably is substantially spherical. In this way it is possible to place the ring such that the ring is made circular, so that the ring has the smallest possible circumference and as little of the expensive ring material as possible is needed. Also in this way the manageability and as a result of that the convenience of installation is increased, the sealing construction can be nested in this way, and the sealing construction is attractive aesthetically speaking.
  • According to a preferred embodiment the attachment portion is at an angle with the plane of the opening in the transitional portion, which is the average of angles of inclination of roofs occurring the most. In this way the sealing construction can be used for most inclining roofs, in any case for roofs with an angle of inclination between 40° and 50°.
  • Preferably the frame portion is integrally formed, as a result of which the frame portion can easily and economically be manufactured.
  • According to another preferred embodiment the frame portion is provided with a sealing material, for instance in the form of a foam strip or labyrinth, to better seal the frame portion against the roof. Such a sealing can be necessary when the inside if the roof is not level. With a labyrinth some flexible ribs around the transitional portion are referred to, which are able to tilt at unevenesses of the roof and which offer more resistance for the remaining flow of air, so that less air passes by.
  • According to a preferred embodiment the frame portion is provided with a second flexible sealing ring to seal the frame portion against the roof. In this way a durable sealing for the frame portion against the roof has been provided.
  • Preferably the second sealing ring has been arranged around the attachment portion of the frame portion and has a circumferential lip which is oriented towards the roof. In this way the second sealing ring is easy to arrange around the attachment portion and aesthetically speaking gives an fine framing of the attachment portion. The lip, which is flexible, gives a good sealing against a roof which is not entirely level.
  • Preferably the frame portion is made from polypropylene, polyethene or polyvinyl chloride, as a result of which a light and firm frame portion is available.
  • Preferably the first and second sealing ring are made from thermoplastic elastomer, as this material has a good deformability and sealing effect.
  • The invention will be elucidated below on the basis of two exemplary embodiments, referring to the drawing.
  • Figure 1 schematically shows a first exemplary embodiment of the sealing construction according to the invention, arranged around a pipe against the inside of a roof.
  • Figure 2 shows a second exemplary embodiment of the sealing construction according to the invention.
  • Figure 3 shows a detail of the second exemplary embodiment according to figure 2.
  • Figure 1 shows a roof construction 1 with a pipe construction 2 extending through the roof and a first exemplary embodiment of the sealing construction 3 according to the invention.
  • The roof construction 1 consists of a carrying layer 10 for the roof-covering, such as bitumen or tiles, an insulation layer 11 and roof boarding 13 to conceal the insulation. The beams between the carrying layer 10 and the roof boarding 13 have not been shown.
  • The pipe construction 2 consists of a pipe 20 with a hood (not shown). In many cases a foil (not shown) has been arranged on the carrying layer 10, which foil connects to the pipe 20, which foil is waterproof and vapour permeable. This foil is particularly of importance during building, so as not to let rain water penetrate, whereas moisture from the newly built house can indeed evaporate.
  • On the inside of the roof the sealing construction 3 according to the invention has been arranged around the pipe 20. This sealing construction consists of an attachment portion 31, a transitional portion 32 and a sealing ring 33. The attachment portion has been secured against the roof boarding with attachment means such as screws and for instance has a rectangular shape. The attachment portion changes into a substantially spherical transitional portion 32 which has an opening at its bottom side which opening is larger than the cross-section of the pipe 20. In this opening the sealing ring 33 has been accommodated, which in the unarranged situation has an opening which is a little smaller than the cross-section of the pipe 20. Preferably a sealing material such as a foam strip (not shown) has been arranged on the attachment portion around the transitional portion, which seals the sealing construction against the roof slope 13, so that no flow of air can arise between the roof and the sealing construction.
  • The sealing ring 33 has been made of a flexible sealing material, preferably thermoplastic elastomer, which can become wider when the pipe 20 is extended through it and which sealingly connects to the pipe 20.
  • When arranging a pipe through a roof the following method can be used.
  • At the location where the pipe 20 should extend through the roof foil, if present, is cut open and an oval hole is made in the roof. The pipe 20 is extended through the hole from the outside to the inside and vertically aligned.
  • Subsequently from below the sealing construction 3 is slid around the pipe 20, in which the sealing ring seals around the pipe 20 a little stretched. The attachment portion 31 is placed against the inside of the roof, and secured to the roof slope 13 with for instance screws. If necessary before securing it can be checked again whether the pipe is vertical. Finally the pipe 20 is connected to for instance a cooker hood or central heating installation, or such like installation.
  • The diameter of the opening in the sealing ring is preferably chosen such that it can seal said sealing ring at two different pipe diameters, which are a little larger than the diameter of the opening in the unstretched sealing ring.
  • According to a preferred embodiment the attachment portion is at an angle of for instance 45° with respect to the centre line in the opening in the transitional portion. In this way the sealing construction can be used for most roofs, also with a roof pitch which differs from 45°, as the sealing ring accommodates the skewness of the pipe in relation to the sealing construction.
  • In stead of a substantially spherical transitional portion 32 another shape can also be chosen for this transitional portion, in which it is preferably ensured that the sealing construction can be nested, so that the sealing construction at manufacture, storage and transport takes up little room.
  • Figure 2 shows a second exemplary embodiment of the sealing construction according to the invention. With respect to figure 1, 100 has been added to corresponding reference numbers.
  • The sealing construction 103 of figure 2 consists of a attachment portion 131, a transitional portion 132 and a first sealing ring 133. The attachment portion 131 can be secured to the roof boarding by means of screws and can for instance have an oval shape. The attachment portion 131 changes into a substantially hood-shaped transitional portion 132, which at its bottom side has an opening which is larger than the cross-section of the pipe to which the sealing construction has to seal (in figure 1 pipe 20). In this opening a first sealing ring 133 has been accommodated which has the same function as sealing ring 33 in figure 1.
  • Around the attachment portion 131 a second sealing ring 34 has been arranged, which can be seen on a larger scale in figure 3. The sealing ring 34 closes around the attachment portion 131 and does nor need to be further secured. The sealing ring 34 has a lip 35 which extends in the direction of the roof boarding (13 in figure 1) against which the sealing ring 34 has to seal. Also the sealing ring 34 has been made of a flexible material, such as a thermoplastic elastomer.
  • The flexible lip 35 provides a good sealing against roof boarding which is not entirely level, so that no warm air can flow out of the house between the attachment portion 131 and the roof boarding and subsequently along the pipe through the roof either.
  • The use of the sealing construction 103 is analogous to the use of sealing construction 3, as described above.
  • The sealing construction according to the invention provides an aesthetic sealing for a pipe through a roof which is simple to arrange and which prevents that a chimney effect occurs around the pipe, as a result of which condensation may occur which may lead to rot and the like.

Claims (12)

  1. Sealing construction for a pipe, such as a flue gas discharge pipe or a ventilation pipe, through a roof, in which the sealing construction is arranged on the inside of the roof and comprises a frame portion and a first flexible sealing ring portion around the pipe.
  2. Sealing construction according to claim 1, in which the frame portion comprises an attachment portion which is attached to the inside of the roof, and comprises a transitional portion which connects to the attachment portion, with an opening which surrounds the pipe at a distance, in which the first flexible sealing ring portion is arranged in the opening of the transitional portion.
  3. Sealing construction according to claim 2, in which the transitional portion substantially has the shape of a hood.
  4. Sealing construction according to claim 2 or 3, in which the transitional portion is substantially spherical.
  5. Sealing construction according to claim 2, 3 or 4, in which the attachment portion is at an angle with the plane of the opening in the transitional portion, which is the average of angles of inclination of roofs occurring the most.
  6. Sealing construction according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the frame portion is integrally formed.
  7. Sealing construction according to any one of the claims 1-6, in which the frame portion is provided with a sealing material, for instance in the form of a foam strip or labyrinth, to seal the frame portion against the roof.
  8. Sealing construction according to any one of the claims 1-6, in which the frame portion is provided with a second flexible sealing ring to seal the frame portion against the roof.
  9. Sealing construction according to claim 8, in which the second sealing ring has been arranged around the attachment portion of the frame portion and has a circumferential lip which is oriented towards the roof.
  10. Sealing construction according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the frame portion is made from polypropylene (PP), polyethene (PE) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
  11. Sealing construction according to claim 8 or 9, in which the second sealing ring is made from thermoplastic elastomer (TPE).
  12. Sealing construction according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the first sealing ring portion is made from thermoplastic elastomer (TPE).
