- the present invention was at 650 hours Operating time the temperature up to the boiling point of the liquid increased in the cell (in this example 68 ° C, see Fig.1). The cell voltage immediately dropped by about 5 volts. Of the main advantage for the technical application is that the cell voltage no longer showed a rising trend.

- stable operation could be achieved at an increased level of the cell voltage, although damage to the cell components cannot be ruled out due to the current high current density (3 and 6).
- Example 8 provided a particularly advantageous result with an acceptably high and, above all, stable cell voltage and a favorable current yield of the products: the current yield of the mainly desired double methoxylated product was high, and the moderate single-methoxylated product formed can , if it is not desired, can be returned after separation from the main product and further implemented.
Abstract

- a solid electrolyte which consists of one or more layers of an ion exchange membrane lying one above the other,
- a cathode and an anode, which are in direct contact with the solid electrolyte,
Es ist allgemein bekannt, die Solid-Polymer-Electrolyte
Technology (SPE-Technologie) (vgl. "Ionenaustauscher-Membranen in
der Elektrolyse und elektroorganischen Synthese", Dr.-Ing. Jakob
Jörissen, Fortschritts Berichte VDI Reihe 3 Nr 442; Düsseldorf:
VDI Verlag 1996, Kapitel 4) für die elektro-organische Synthese
verschiedenartiger organischer Verbindungen einzusetzen.
It is well known the solid polymer electrolyte
Technology (SPE technology) (cf. "Ion exchange membranes in
Electrolysis and Electroorganic Synthesis ", Dr.-Ing. Jakob
This procedure is compared to conventional electrolysis techniques advantageous because it produces particularly high yields can be achieved and a time-consuming work-up is unnecessary, since the use of conductive electrolytes is avoided can.
However, the application of this technology is still affected significantly restricted that such electrolytic cells are not operated continuously over a longer period of time can be. The current density and thus the space-time yield To keep constant, the cell voltage has to keep increasing increase. A relatively low cell voltage isn't just that desirable because this means low energy costs, the increase the cell voltage is also only up to a certain one Limit possible without running the risk of solid electrolytes irreversible damage. When this limit is reached the reaction must therefore be interrupted and the solid electrolyte removed from the cell and processed or by a fresh one will be replaced.
There was therefore the task of using solid polymer electrolyte technology working electrolysis process in To improve in terms of greater economy. In particular, a method is to be provided in which the current density remains constant over a longer period of time can be held without increasing the cell voltage leads.
Demgemäß wurde das eingangs definierte Verfahren gefunden.Accordingly, the process defined at the outset was found.
The method according to the invention is basically suitable for electrochemical oxidation or reduction of all compounds, for which the SPE technology comes into consideration, the anodic Oxidations are preferred.

- A:
- unabhängig voneinander Methylen, Carbonyl oder -CH(OCH3)-
- B:
- unabhängig voneinander H oder O-CH3
- m:
- eine Zahl von 0 bis 3
- n:
- R 1 :
- independently of one another hydrogen, C 2 - to C 4 -alkyl, C 1 - to C 4 -alkoxy or halogen

- independently of one another methylene, carbonyl or -CH (OCH 3 ) -
- B:
- independently of one another H or O-CH 3
- m:
- a number from 0 to 3

Has,
- the groups R 1 , m and n have the same meaning as in formula I,
- the groups X have the same meaning as the groups A in formula I.
- the groups Y have the same meaning as the groups B in formula I.
- the groups X and Y, in contrast to the groups A and B of the formula (I), are selected such that the oxidation number of the compounds of the formula (II) is at least 1 lower than that of the compounds of the formula (I), the Oxidation numbers of the compounds of the formulas (II) and groups A and B are analogous to those for compounds of the formulas (I) and groups X and Y are calculated.
allgemeinen Formel (I) werden die Oxidationszahlen jeder Gruppe A
zugeordnet.
Nach diesem Berechnungsverfahren hätte also beispielsweise
Oxidationszahl 4.According to this calculation method, for example, benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal would have the
Compounds of the formula (I) in which R 1 is hydrogen or methoxy and the group -AB together represent the dimethyl acetal of the formyl group can be prepared particularly easily. Those compounds are particularly preferred in which n = 1 and the group -AB is in para-position to a methoxy group. In the case of compounds in which n = 2, these two groups are preferably in the para position and the R 1 is hydrogen. In those compounds in which n = 3, the groups -AB are in the 1, 3 and 5 positions on the aromatic nucleus and R 1 is hydrogen.
In general, one starts from compounds in which the Group -X-Y represents methyl, so the oxidation number is 0.
However, it is also possible to use such compounds Formula (I) in which the oxidation number is higher than 0 is, especially of methyl benzyl ether and the corresponding Derivatives. In this way, the method according to the invention particularly economical for making connections with relatively high oxidation numbers can be used.
In general, mixtures of substances are used in the process according to the invention formed with different oxidation numbers. If in such cases, products of formula (I) with a real low oxidation number are not desired, it is possible this of those with the higher oxidation number by conventional Methods to separate, and the former again after the inventive method for producing the desired Use products. For example, it is possible to p-methoxytoluene (oxidation number 0) to produce a mixture that in addition to the mainly desired anisaldehyde dimethyl acetal (Oxidation number 2) or p-methoxybenzyl methyl ether (oxidation number 1) contains. After separating the two products, you can p-Methoxybenzylmethylether as the starting compound again Feed the electrolysis cell.
Furthermore, the method is particularly suitable for electrochemical Methoxylation of methine, methylene or methyl groups aliphatic or alicyclic mono- or diether preferably with 3 to 6 carbon atoms in the α-position an ether oxygen atom (starting ether) with formation of compounds in which at least one H atom of methine, Methylene or methyl groups of the starting ether through a Methoxy group is substituted.
Als Ausgangsether eignen sich besonders 1,2-Dimethoxyethan, Tetrahydrofuran (THF), Tetrahydropyran oder 1,4-Dioxan.Particularly suitable starting ethers are 1,2-dimethoxyethane, Tetrahydrofuran (THF), tetrahydropyran or 1,4-dioxane.

A particularly favorable effect can be achieved if the Electrolysis liquid boils evenly in the cell. This will the temperature in the cell prefers as close to the Boiling point raised that the reaction mixture through the Heat development during the reaction only on the membrane surface comes to a boil. There is a certain gas bubble development quite desirable, but a violent boiling must strong gas bubble development can be avoided. The liquid in particular, should not boil so much that more than 5% of the Electrolysis cell are displaced by gas bubbles, otherwise the Mass transport to the membrane is no longer guaranteed and the Membrane is destroyed. This effect is sudden Voltage rise connected. Destruction caused by this the membrane can be reliably prevented by automatic voltage monitoring in the event of too high a voltage Voltage of electrical current through the cell is turned off.
The method according to the invention is expediently carried out in this way by making the electrolysis liquid parallel to the anode Solid electrolyte / anode interface preferably continuous flows through. Flow velocities are suitable Electrolysis liquid relative to the anode from 1 to 10 cm / s.
The current density is generally 0.1 to 40, preferably 1 to 10 A / dm 2 . The voltages required to achieve these current densities are generally 2 to 20, preferably 3 to 10 volts. At higher voltages there is a risk of irreversible damage to the solid electrolyte.
Most are used in the electrochemical according to the invention Oxidation of organic substrates on the counter electrode (cathode) usually protons reduced to hydrogen.
The cells in which the procedure can be carried out are known and for example in loc. cit, chapter 4.2 and in the DE-A-19533773.
Suitable for practicing the process on an industrial scale especially those described in DE-A-19533773 serially switched plate stack cells.

Table 1 shows the conditions under which examples and Comparative examples were carried out.
The experiment is divided into
According to the present invention was at 650 hours Operating time the temperature up to the boiling point of the liquid increased in the cell (in this example 68 ° C, see Fig.1). The cell voltage immediately dropped by about 5 volts. Of the the main advantage for the technical application is that the cell voltage no longer showed a rising trend.
Fig. 2 shows the application of the present invention, ie the operation of the SPE cells with boiling cell content, using eight examples (test parts B1 to B8) with changing operating conditions with regard to the concentrations and the current density (see Table 1). With the moderate conditions at the beginning of the term (1 and 2), an increase in voltage could be completely avoided. At a current density of 500 A / m 2 (3 and 6), which is a relatively high value for electro-organic syntheses, there were initially significantly higher values of the cell voltage, but with a clearly decreasing tendency. After 180 hours of operation, stable operation could be achieved at an increased level of the cell voltage, although damage to the cell components cannot be ruled out due to the current high current density (3 and 6). The conditions of Example 8 provided a particularly advantageous result with an acceptably high and, above all, stable cell voltage and a favorable current yield of the products: the current yield of the mainly desired double methoxylated product was high, and the moderate single-methoxylated product formed can , if it is not desired, can be returned after separation from the main product and further implemented.
