Application filed June 9, 1910.V Serial No. 585,955.
To all whom it may concern: i
jle it known that l, :H num-:nr H. Fam', a `citi'lzen 'of the United States, residing at. De-
troit, county of lrVayue. State of Michigan, have invented a certain new und useful Imlirovement in Ap crut is for Compressing Air, and declare t le fo lowing to be a full,
clear, and exact description ofthe same;
such as willenable o'th'ers skilled in the artl to which it pertains to n'dke and 'use the same, reference being had fo. the accompanying drawings, which'form a part of this specification.
My invention .relates to apparatus for compressing airand an ob prrwements is to provide', an improved apparatus for compressing air and one which may ,be vreadily` adapted to an internal combustion' engine without necessitating changes in, or addition' to, the engine. I secure this object'in the device illustrated in 'the accompanying drawing., in which,-
.Figure l1,- is a sectional view of an pppn! ratos embodying my invention, and. so much of a gas engine asiszneeessary toillustru its connectionl therewlth. Fig. 2, is a view similar to Fig. 1, `:showing ai modified form .0f apparatus embodyin? my o a g inventin, i A', indicatesr a part as engine cylm.` der; B, isa pipe` or conduit secured thereof said cylinder.
G, is a'cylinder in which reciprocates\alV piston D; the pipeB communicates with the cylinder-,Gat thez'enter of. its lower end.
"C, is l. pro'ectionjextending upward from the center o the lo`wei end of the cylinder G and having an aperture therethrough communicating with the bore of the pipe B. E, is a stem extending upward from the .center of the piston D.

M, is un inwardly o ning automatic valve conununicuting wit' thc'atlm here and with the interior of the cylinder and 6@ located at the upper end of said cylinder.
N are apertures throughthegullbof they cylinder'J just aboveI where the'uppor surface of the piston F comes at the lower end of the stroke of said iston. l l H, is ahole exten( ing inward from the lower surface of the iston D at the center I thereof. The walls o? the hole H are adapt -ed to fit loosely over the projection C.
I, is a hole extending inward from the upper surface of the piston F and at the center thereof. the wallsv of 'said holelit loosely over the-pnojcttion K.
' b, Fig. 1, is a nozzle communicating with a, is an automatic ialve a inward in the nozzle b.
The construction of the modified form' shown in Fig. 2', is entirely similar to` that of F1 f. and are united'by an lntegral piece of sma'ller diameter and in Fig. 2, these pistons are united by an integral piece, or rod of apted to open 'larger diameter, and in Fig. 2, cup'lelithers` P and Q are used in connectionrwith 'the 35 pistons F and D to secure a tight joint and 1n1 the former case to serve the purpose of the inlet valve M. In the .deviceof Fig. 2, the lower end of the cylinder G is shown .perforated and a flap valve a is shown 90 covering the perforations and adapted to automatically open inward, this construc-J tion being adapted to take the place of they The operation of the above vice is as follows VVhen a vacuum .is drawn in the cylinder A, in the o Aration of the engine, the pistons F an D are forced tothe lower end of their travel.
