Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. BEARDsLEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Chandeliers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in chandeliers and its object is to provide a device of this character of simple and economical construction which may be collapsed for packing and shipping purposes, and which may be readily and easily set up without the use of tools when it is required to be installed.
The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chandelier made in accordance with my invention as it appears when installed. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the central longitudinal axis of the body of the chandelier parallel to the plane of the lamp arms, one of the arms being shown in set up position, while the other is shown collapsed on the body. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through Fig. 2 on the line 33 thereof. Fig. 1 is a transverse section through Fig. 2 on the line 41 thereof, both arms being folded down. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the inner end of one of the lamp arms. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a U-shaped bracket which is directly secured to the chandelier body and to which the lamp arm is hinged. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the bolt or screw by means of which the bracket shown in Fig. 6 is attached to the chandelier body.
In the drawings, A indicates a suspension member adapted to be secured to the ceiling in the usual manner and from which is hung the chandelier body B. The parts A and B are connected by means of a link a and a link Z), one of which is split so that it may be sprung apart when connecting it to the other. These features of construction form no part of my invention.
0, C indicate the lamp arms which are hinged to the body and are adapted to be folded up against the body as shown on the left in Fig. 2 when the chandelier is collapsed for boxing. These arms are constructed and secured to the body in the same manner, and like parts of eacharm and its connections are indicated by the same letters of reference. As shown .in the drawings, the chandelier body is provided with two lamp arms, but it is to be understood that it may be provided with any number of arms, the body being preferably shaped in cross-section so as to provide an associated upright flat face B for each lamp arm.
The arm C is provided at its outer end with a lamp socket D which is secured to it in any usual or convenient manner. In the preferred form of construction, the lamp arm G consists of a hollow tube, rectangular in cross-section and having top and bottom walls 0, 0 respectively, and side walls 0 0 The top wall 0 is cut away at its inner end to leave an opening 0 Said arm is hinged to a U-shaped bracket E which is secured to the associated upright face B of the chandelier body, by means of a bolt or screw F. The bracket E has legs 6, e which are arranged edgewise and extend horizon: tally away from the chandelier body. Said legs engage within the inner end of the arm C with their outer faces adjacent to the inner faces of the side walls 0 0 of said arm. The base 0 of said U-shaped bracket is fiat and engages against the flat surface of the associated face B of the chandelier body. Said base is provided with a central aperture 6 to receive the shank of .the bolt F. Said bolt F has a large rectangular head f which engages against the inner face of the base 6 of the U-shaped bracket, while its lateral edges f 7 engage against the inner faces of the legs 6, e thereof. The threaded shank F of the bolt F extends through the aperture 6 in the base of the U-shaped bracket, and through an aperture B in the associated wall of the chandelier body. Said bolt shank extends within said wall of the chandelier body and engages in a threaded recess 9 in a hollow casting G supported within the body B in the usual manner. A set screw 9 is threaded through said casting and engages against the shank of the bolt F to lock it against rotation. The bolt F is provided with a longitudinal central aperture F through which the lamp wires K are led into the body.
The arm C is hinged to the legs-e of the U-shaped bracket E by means of short screws J, J. The lower corners of said legs 6 are cut away as indicated at 0 so as to permit the arm C to be swung upon the screws J, J without its bottom wall 0 binding against the ends of said bracket. The opening 0 at the inner end of the top wall of the lamp arm C permits the arm to be swung upward on its hinges without said top wall striking against the bracket E.
In assembling the parts the shank of the bolt F is first inserted through the aperture 6 in the base of the U-shaped bracket with the edges F, f of its head in engagement with the inner faces of the legs 6 of said member. The two parts are then preferably soldered or otherwise rigidly secured together. Said bolt shank is inserted through the aperture B in the wall B of the chandelier body and screwed into the threaded aperture ,7 in the hollow casting G, the U- shaped bracket serving as a wrench. The lamp wires K are then threaded through the aperture F in the bolt F and the lamp arm hinged to the bracket E as described.
When the lamp G is folded down at right angles to the chandelier body to set up the chandelier, the inner end of the lower wall 0 of the arm 0 abuts against the associated face B of said body, and the upper face of said lower wall abuts against the lower edges of the bracket and against the lower edge f of the head f of the bolt F. At the same time the lower face of the top wall 0 engages against the upper edges of the legs a, e of the bracket E at their outer ends. The above mentioned fixed parts of the lamp arm thus lock against the other parts, fixed relative to the body of the chandelier, which support the arm in a hori zontal position. This construction distributes the strain and prevents undue stress at any particular point, thereby making it pos sible to secure the necessary rigidity without unduly increasing the weight of material used.
While I have shown and described herein certain details of mechanical construction in describing a preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that these may be changed in various ways without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not wish to be limited thereby except as pointed out in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention 1. A. collapsible chandelier embracing a hollow body having an apertured face, bracket arms rigid with said body located adjacent the aperture of said face, and a tubular lamp arm hinged to said bracket arms and adapted to be swung upwardly and toward said body, said lamp arm and body having fixed parts adapted to abut against each other to limit the downward movement .of said lamp arm when the same is folded down into horizontal posit-ion.
2. A collapsible chandelier embracing a hollow body having an apertured face, a bracket having a base engaged against said face of the body, means for securing said bracket to said body, and a tubular lamp arm hinged to said bracket, said lamp arm being adapted to be swung upwardly and toward said body and said lamp arm and body having fixed parts adapted to abut againsteach other to limit the downward movement of said lamp arm when the same is swung downwardly on its hinges.
3. A collapsible chandelier embracing a hollow body having a Hat apertured face, a U-shaped bracket having a flat apertured base engaged against the flat face of said body and legs extending horizontally away from said body, a polygonal headed, apertured bolt connecting said U-shaped bracket to said body and extending through the apertures of said bracket and body, and a folding tubular lamp arm having side walls arranged parallel with and adjacent to the legs of said bracket and hinged thereto, said lamp arm having a part adapted when said lamp arm is folded down to abut against a part fixed relative to the chandelier body.
f. A collapsible chandelier embracing a hollow body having a fiat apertured face, a Ushaped bracket having a fiat apertured base engaged against the flat face of said body and legs extending horizontally away from said body, a polygonal headed apertured bolt connecting said U-shaped bracket to said body with its vertical edges engaged against the vertical inner faces of the legs of said bracket, said bolt extending through the aperture of said bracket and body, and a folding tubular lamp arm having side walls which embrace the legs of said bracket, and are hinged thereto, the upper wall of said tubular lamp arm being cut away near its inner end, and the lower wall thereof being adapted to abut against the flat face of said body and against the under surface when said lamp arm is folded down into horizontal position.
5. A collapsible chandelier embracing a 'hollow body having a flat apertured face, a
U-shaped bracket having a flat apertured base engaged against the flatface of said body and legs extending horizontally away from said body, a polygonal headed apertured bolt connecting said U-shaped bracket to said body with its vertical edges engaged against the vertical inner faces of the legs of said bracket, said bolt extending through the aperture of said bracket and body, and a folding tubular lamp arm having side walls which embrace the legs of said bracket, and are hinged thereto, the upper wall of said tubular lamp arm being cut away near its inner end, and the lower wall thereof being adapted to alout longitudinally against presence of two Witnesses, this 1st day of the flat face of said body and upwardly October A.
