Patented Jan. 9, 1912. Serial No. 610,894.
accompanying drawings, and to the lettersand figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in writing desks and, comprises means whereby a person in a reclining posture may write either in the dark or light and affording means for a person keeping the line of writing.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the top of the desk B having flanges C along the opposite marginal edges thereof. Two rollers, designated by letters D and E, are journaled in the opposite sides and one of which has a wheel E fastened to one end thereof with teeth about its circumference adapted to be engaged by the spring pawl F. A bailshaped member K is p votally mounted upon opposite sides of the desk and the arms of the bail are adapted to engage the teeth of the segments 0, disposed at inclinations to the opposite sides of the desk.
In operation, the paper is placed upon the top of the desk and fed between the rollers, the feeding of the paper being determined by the rotary movement of the hand wheel. Each time the pawl strikes a tooth, it will cause a clicking to give a signal to the person writing as to the feeding of the paper. The bail-shaped member serves as a means upon which the person writing may rest his or her hand and serving as a guide, enabling the operator to write without looking upon the paper. Said bail-shaped member may be adjusted in different positions by the arms engaging correspondmg teeth of the segments in the opposite sides of the desk.
hat I claim to be new is: v A writing desk provided with a table upon which'a sheet of paper is adapted to be held, a bail-shaped member pivotally mounted upon the sidewalls of the desk and adapted to rest upon the opposite marginal edges thereof above the surface of the table, a ratchet segment upon the side of the desk adapted to engage an arm of the bail to hold the same in an adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. JAMES LAIVRENCE DOW.
