BENJAMIN T. BABBIT'I HYDE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CASTEB FOR STORE-COUNTERS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN T. BAB- BITT HYDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casters for Store-Counters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to a caster for an article of furniture arranged so that by elevating the article, the caster becomes op erativc to thereby enable the said article to be shifted.
The nature, scope and characteristic features of my present invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is an elevational View of the caster attachment shown in application to a vertical sectional view of a store counter, for by elevating automatically changing the position of the caster so as to enable thereby the counter to be shifted thereon; the said attachment embodying main features of my said invention; and Fig. 2, is a front elevational view of the caster attachment and a rear elevational view of the store counter with which the said attachment is movably connected.
Referring to the drawings a as shown, is a store counter, and a, is the base-plate thereof, in which. is arranged a transverse slot (4 but my invention to be hereinafter more fully explained is adapted for use with many other articles of furniture.
6, is a revoluble caster-ball provided with a casing and having a shank 6 preferably pinned at 5 to a vertical bar 1) and having a tongue 6 to engage the slot a, of the base-plate of the counter a in a manner to be hereinafter more fully explained. The vertical bar 5 extends through oblong slots 5 and b, of a bracket 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The upper portion of the vertical bar 6", is recessed and on it is mounted a coiled-spring I), one end of which bears against the said vertical bar and the other against the under surface on both sides of the slot 12 of the projecting arm 6 of the said bracket 1). When the counter or other Specification of Letters Patent.

article of furniture is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the caster-ball 6, thereof, will be held by the normal compression of the coiled-spring 6 in the position therein shown and with the tongue Z2 out of engagement with the slot [4", of the base-plate of the said counter or other article of furniture, aided by the bow-spring I), in bearing contact with the said vertical bar Z), and the respective ends of said spring in engagement with the projecting bracket-arms and If, also as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. In order to change the position of the said tongue so as to enter the slot a, it is only necessary to slightly elevate manually the article of furniture to thereby cause automatically the caster-ball to change its position to that in which the article will be solely carried thereon for shifting then about, the said article. When the article has been shifted to the position desired, then by introducing a bar or the like into the slot (4 the tongue I), can be readily released from the said slot to cause the caster-attachment described to again assume the position as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and with thereby the article made a fixture, in its thus shifted position.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a support, a caster-ball provided with a casing and having an extension provided with a tongue mounted in said support, an article of furniture provided with a transverse slot and means connected with the extension of said caster to permit said tongue to engage in said slot by elevating said article.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a support, a caster-ball provided with a casing and having an extension provided with a tongue mounted in said support, an article of furniture provided with a transverse slot therein, springs respectively, to normally maintain the tongue of said caster out of engagement with the slot of said article and to force said tongue into the slot of said article, when the latter is elevated.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a support, a caster-ball provided with a casing and having a vertical extension provided With a tongue normally held under a spring tension in said support, an article of furniture having a base-plate provided With a slot therein and means to cause the tongue of said extension to enter the slot of said article, When the latter is elevated.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of the two subscribing Witnesses hereto.
BENJAMIN T. BABBITT HYDE.
