Application filed April 1'0 .aw'w/wm it may concern: 4
@Be it known that 1, JAMES Animrson, ll 12,. citizenof the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Danger-Si nals for Electric Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to signalii'ig devices such as are used on surface cars to warn persons attempting to cross the track at the rear of the car of the approach of another car traveling in a direction opposite to the direction of travel of the first named car, and particularly relates to the detailed construction and arrangement of the signal ing device and the casing therefor.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a very simple, durahe and etlicient signal of the character above described and particularly to-provide a casing for an audible and a visual signal, so constructed as to permit'thesignals to be easily noted and yet I to inclose the signals so that they shall he l I I I I thoroughly protected from damage.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the'result, erence is to be had to the following desc tion and accompanying drawings, in which 1' Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the casing and its associated parts. Fig. 53 is a 3 I is a front elevation of the rear part of the I casing. I Corresponding and like parts are referred I to in the following description and indicated I in all the views of the drawings by the same i reference characters.
The improved danger signal forming the I subject matter of the present invention is I principally designed for use on electric cars, such as are employed for surface traliic in 5 cities or for interurban traffic. I
.The device comprises a casing or housing I 8 preferably formed in sections having I tor-engaging parts, thereby to permit thel detached when it is de- I sired to obtain access to the interior of the casing. The casing 8 is disposed thej rear end ofthe car and is provided with. a I standard or pedestal 9 having a laterally! extended perforated base It) pierced la or more screws or similar fastening 4 whereby the casing; isreta cd in QC Specification oi": Letters Eatent.
Patented July 31, 12912. Serial No. 491,2?"
t within the casing is iariit-ion Ill defining a plurality of inde pendent compartments l2 and 13, one of which is adapted to contain a visual signal, preferably in the form of an incandescent llll'D'J'l and the other an audible signal 15.
' section 1.6 of the casing is stoc l or otherwise lcufined with a plurality of letters 17 hich are illumi noted when the lamp la lighted and thus serve to warn persons attempting to cross the track at the rear of the car, of the approach of another car traveling in the opposite direction.
Extending laterally and upwardly from the inner face of the section 16, are sup? porting lugs or brackets 18 which serve to clamp and l -stain a strip of glass, mica or other 'ansparent material 19 in position at the re: of letters 17 so that the colored glass will show through the openings 17 in the casing section 16 when the interior of the coinpn'tment 13 is illuminated.
The audible signal 15 preferably in the form. o'l. an incased olectromagnetically op crated bell the base of which is. secured by or similar devices 20 to partition ll, as shown.
the ca ,Disposed the The rear ection of the casing 8 is formed with a sar of perforations 21 to permit or other liquid that may find its way throu'rh the openings 21 into the compartmerit lhe standard or pedestal 9 is formed with a veil f ily disposed conduit 23 tlirough whichrhe adjacent terminals of an elctrical circuit 25 pass for contact with the binding screws of the lamp 1% and bell 15 respectively, the latter being connected in series so that when the circuit is closed the same will. be actuated simultaneously to sound the alarm and display visual signal at the rear of the car.
Any suitable means may be used For closing the circuit through the lamp and bell actuating l'l'lGQl'ltlIlhlll, and devices of this character are well known no device for the purpose is illustrated.
It will he understood that preferably the e wil be one of the casings 8 including seal and audible signal at each end of the car so that no matter in which. direction the car may be going, the signal at the rear end of the car may be actuated by the motorman so as to sound an alarin anfi at the same time display a visual signal in position to be seen by any person attempting to cross the track at the rear of the car.
Any desired combination of letters may be stamped or formed in the front section 16 of the casing for displaying a Warning signal, but it is preferred to use the Words Stop Danger either in combination or singly, as desired.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is: a
A danger signal for cars comprising a substantially cylindrical casing having a base therein, a pedestal connected to said casing and base for mounting the casing upon a car, a transverse partition extend ing upward from the base and dividing the casing into a pair of independent compartments facingin opposite directions, said partition forming a'supporting means for the cylindrical casing, an electric lamp in one' of the compartments, an electric bell in the other compartment and mounted upon 1 the said partition, and removable end pieces having threaded engagement With the ends of the cylindrical casing, the end pieces for the compartment having the electrical lamp therein being formed with a transparent portion, While the opposite end piece is perforated to permit of the ready'escape of sound. i
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses:
